AIBU?

To think this kitten is BROWN!?

Ooh, my first ever AIBU, this is exciting.

Please help settle an arguement I'm currently having with DP. I know this kitten is a tabby, and therefore a bit multi-tonal, but if I would say he is definitely brown, where as DP swears he is grey!

I just don't understand how we can both be so certain!

So, which one of us is colourblind, and AIBU??

He is grey tabby

grey tabbies are brown under their balck/dark grey stripes.

Noodles picture is of one of those rare white-under-the-stripe tabbies.

Just like a grey horse is actually white, a grey tabby is actually the colour of your kitten. - beige.

No more arguing please!

(actually I think I am with darkswan, his colour is Tabby. There you go. No need for any of thise grey/brown malarky)

Actually, I've just seen your second lot of pics and now maybe leaning towards grey!

He is a grey tabby as is mine, DH insists he's brown, he isn't, most tabbies have a tan underfur. His sister is black though. I'm not your DM as that house is cleaner than ours. Grin

I agree with you - brown tabby. The Whiskas advert cats are grey.

Those posters saying this is a grey tabby - can you post a picture of a brown tabby for comparison, please? Or do you maintain there is no such thing as a brown tabby, just grey or silver?

YABU as are all those who posted pictures of their gorgeous cats.

I have had to report this thread because of the cuteness overload.

Well Smile a cat breeder and cat show council would define your kitten as a brown tabby. Based on the colour of his leathers, which are brown, not blue.

I have a blue cat, and your kitten is brown OP, as is yours Pantah.
I've seen many, many kittens, (friends with a breeder) and those are brown. Not blue.

More pictures anyway 👀 :-) They're delicious and squeeeeeeesome whatever their colour is! Love their little faces.

He looks like my girl. Close to when she is on my lap she is beigey-brown, but when I spot her prowling round the garden, she looks grey.

I agree Crimson, must go for a lie down with a cuppa and cat.

Here's a blue tabby, very like my solid blue cat.
Not brown.

He's a brown tabby. He's also gorgeous. Brown tabbies vary in the amount of 'rufousing' they show.

Blue tabbies and silver tabbies might both be referred to as 'grey tabbies' but they have very different genetic set-ups and they look different too. Blue tabbies are mid-grey with darker grey stripes. Silver tabbies are very light silvery grey with black stripes.

Definitely brown (and utterly adorable!)
At one point we had both a brown and grey tabby cats, both gorgeous but totally different colours

Tabby colours. Silver tabby isn't on this chart, but a silver tabby is a brown tabby which also has the 'inhibitor' gene - this has the effect of turning its agouti (brown) hairs white, except for their tips, but doesn't affect the black hairs that make its stripes.

I got a cat the same sort of colour, I think he's brown but some of my friends and Mum say he's grey Confused

GerundTheBehemoth I like you. You speak with an authority that I choose to believe. ;) What is 'rufousing'?

Totally agree with comments about thinking of grey tabbies as being like the kittens on the Whiskas adverts.

Regardless of what the official name is of his type - I still think he actually looks brown!

Might have to make a tally .....

I so badly want a cat and the gorgeous pics on this thread just reminded me of why.

I'd say brown and grey op. Maybe your kitten is like the blue and gold dress Smile. Gorgeous though.

Thank you B9494 Grin. Rufousing is reddish tones in the brown bits. Lots of it makes a brown tabby a warm reddy-brown colour. (Though still a brown tabby, with black stripes, not a ginger with... ginger stripes.) Brown tabbies with not much rufousing look a cooler grey-brown. But the gene or genes that control rufousing haven't been found yet (AFAIK).

That's really interesting GerundTheBehemoth! I've learnt a new word even if our debate continues!

Ok I stand corrected.
he is a brown tabby.

But I still like the description 'tabby' when asked about his colour. So much simpler !

I reckon the answer is to both do one of those online colour perception tests, and agree the one with the highest score on there is right!

I usually get 'hawk' or similar as I have excellent colour perception, and I vote brown. Brown with white tips is still brown.

Nope, tried but can't tell by looking at pics. There's nothing else for it, you'll just have to bring him here. Now. Please.
