DD is 16, we recently purchased 50 Shades Of Grey from the Sky box set. I watched it with her, wasn't an issue. Then DH comes in shouting and telling me that it is inappropriate and definitely doesn't approve... Who is BU?

It's definitely inappropriate as it gives a very skewed, dangerous and downright wrong view of bdsm lifestyle, for that reason alone I wouldn't let a teenager watch it.

No, at 16, I don't think this is a big deal tbh. And for all the posturing about 50sog, I don't think it promotes a worse model than most Hollywood movies. It's just that people don't like it when male dominance is portrayed in a way that turns women on rather than in a way that is designed to appeal to men.

Films are certificated for a reason. However, I think parents can decide to ignore this to a certain extent but you should have perhaps discussed it with your DH first.

We had a chat about it but she mainly found it ridiculous.

I don't see it as an issue. I was just under that age watching American beauty, boys don't cry etc. It's a shit film with shit characters that I doubt she would feel like she'd want to be either of them. It depends on the kid I guess but you could ask her what she thought and see what she thinks of controlling relationships etc.
Jaws was a pg when I was a kid so I'm not sure if my childhood was tainted by the rating system.
