To urge you now more than ever to support your country

Not a discussion on Leave v Remain. That s been done to death.
Now that the decision has been made, and our economy is going to take a massive hit, do you think it is reasonable to ask people to support our own economy now and buy goods which are actually manufactured in Britain?

Britain's manufacturing base was sold off in the 80's. Asking people to give up their Samsung TV's and iphones to buy Kendal Mint Cake isn't going to get us out of this mess. The chickens are coming home to roost.

The economy dictates that I buy as cheaply as possible. If that's British, fantastic, if not, what can I do?

We don't make anything anymore. This is what I can't understand people saying. I heard a bloke from Birmingham on the radio saying he thought everything would be OK as "we used to make a lot of things round here". Yes, but not anymore and how are you going to set all these businesses up. Where is the money coming from?

Maid. Like Honda, Toyota, Nissan. All of whom employ thousands in the UK.

Where feasible, I already do. Apart from food and the odd plastic or ceramic item (tangle teaser, kitchen stuff) there's not a great deal of everyday stuff that is made here, though.

I rejected the British option when I bought a dehumidifier because it had a habit of bursting into flames and my house didn't need drying out that desperately.

Tbh, I've always been pleased if I can buy European made, eg sebo. Best stock up on bags,eh?

Yeah 'cause we're all sitting on thousands ready to blow on brand new cars. Thats sensible in the current climate

Just feel it's sad that we should now be strengthening the European economies at the expense of our own when we are going to need all the help we can get.

Do you realise that lots of things are made outside of the U.K. and then finished in the UK, which allows manufacturers to say that it's made in the UK?

However, you'll be pleased to know that pretty Polly and aristoc tights and some from M&S are made in Belper, Derbyshire, so that should be a bit cheaper than nipping out and buying a new four wheel drive!

What would be good iix if those people who have more money than the average Mumsnetter, who have plenty of money whig they have salted away in some tax haven or spent on buy a luxurious yacht would try investing it this country instead, especially in some of these areas -

I like the theory but, as always, life is more complicated than that. If we buy something because it is British-made, rather than because it is well-made, you end up with dross like Leyland cars.

And PS, for your information "the decision" hasn't been made. All I can see is a collective political horror of making any such decision.

That's what I'm trying to say - checking the label isn't a reliable method of checking where a product was manufactured. For instance, a dress can be 98% manufactured in China or where ever but if they sew the buttons on when it gets to the UK they are entitled to sew in a 'made in uk' label. However, some things are genuinely made in the UK from start to finish, like tights!

Bless your naivety. Most things that say Made in the UK are not. They are assembled there, or have a label sewed on, or some other technicality that means they can claim it was made there when actually it was made in a sweatshop in China.

I buy cheapest. That is out of necessity. For some strange reason I can't see that changing any time soon

I'd be interested to know how much of my support of the british economy will be used to support my country which has been royally shafted and basically abandoned by great britain before i start collecting Nissans.

I'd love a list of completely British made products please. I'd buy them.

No 98% made elsewhere and then lovingly folded in naice tissue paper in the UK please.

Oh no. That's really sad. I know the company as I've freelanced for them.

A small example - I think Somerset Brie is probably made in Britain as opposed to French Brie. An English apple probably grown here than in Spain. And before some cynic comes in and says " wow that will help the economy" -All I am saying is if we all did it, it would soon mount up.
Well it was worth a try. In the face of such negativity and cynicism, I ll leave it there.

It does make sense and I think a lot of people will try but MN is the wrong place for common sense at the moment
