Not a discussion on Leave v Remain. That s been done to death.
Now that the decision has been made, and our economy is going to take a massive hit, do you think it is reasonable to ask people to support our own economy now and buy goods which are actually manufactured in Britain?

Channel islands are not in the EU as far as I know. Are they tainted or not?

PNGirl · 29/06/2016 21:07

Thing is it's not just about manufacturing locations. I work for a small shoe company. Our products are designed here in the UK, made in a Southern European country by family owned workshops and then shipped worldwide from the UK to customers. This provides work for a lot of people here and our Mail Order side keeps carriers in work too. It makes me sad that people would dismiss our products because they think they don't benefit our economy.

Jersey, along with the Isle of man and Guernsey, couldn't vote.
Not in the EU ...

Unless I've helped transport them potatoes round the rest of the U.K, then they are tainted by the county of factory's based in.

Honestly fucking British manufactures importing, exporting, hiring people from anywhere and having the barefaced cheek to be sited in counties that voted with the wrong majority. Angry

Not sure Honda Nissan Toyota will remain in the UK.

Actually quite impressed by www.madeingb.org/members/sector/sports-leisure

But at the same time just can't buy into the "we're all on this together" "let's pull together now and all buy British."

There are some great British manufacturing companies but (a) there really aren't that many - manufacturing accounts for just 10% of our GDP and is in decline and (b) they tend to be high-end stuff - so yeah next time I want a tractor I'll remember to buy British but I may struggle if I just want some bin liners.

Misplaced patriotism got us into this mess, but I doubt it will get us out.

Or did you forget that you were talking about actual people?

So now people are social pariahs for engaging local businesses?

Blimey, we really are fucked, aren't we?

GiddyGiddyGoat · 29/06/2016 22:10

Oh Mango, You really are a silver tongued charmer...
You're very cross for someone so pleased with the way things turned out.

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2016 22:15

Mango, given that MrsSpecter is reasonably clearly in NI (correct me if I'm wrong) I can see why she might be upset at the phraseology you chose. From my understanding the consequences of Brexit have the potential to be pretty extreme for NI with the potential to undo 20 years of hard and painful work at the peace process.

Emotions are high all over. Probably polite not to belittle other people's.

Meanwhile, can anyone answer why a PP thought buying Commonwealth was a particularly useful idea? I can see arguments for both UK and European, but Buy Commonwealth has me scratching my head.

user1467101855 · 29/06/2016 22:16

You said local tradesmen, not local companies that may or may not be local tradesmen.
Don't act all offended when called out on what you ACTUALLY said.

Is this a tantrum in a nursery?

winkywinkola · 29/06/2016 22:26

I will buy British if I think it's the best or best value available. Otherwise no, I won't.

If Britain has voted to leave the EU in order to perform on an international stage then they have to be the best for me to buy British.

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 22:28

My own shame Confused
I've literally no idea what you're going on about User.

I've nothing to be ashamed of.

user1467101855 · 29/06/2016 22:30

On a thread devoted to buying british, you said you will only employ local tradesmen. Ergo, you will not employ any foreign tradesmen.
That is what you said. And then got very upset when it was pointed out that its a bit discriminatory.
So either you discriminate, or you lied in your earlier post.

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 22:34

Why would local tradesmen not be foreign?

There are plenty of local tradesmen round here from all over - my point was supporting our economy, and by extension the local economy.

You said did I specify 'no Irish, no Polish etc' - it was you who extrapolated that from what I posted.

HoneyDragon · 29/06/2016 22:35

But a local tradesperson can be foreign and local? Confused
