Not a discussion on Leave v Remain. That s been done to death.
Now that the decision has been made, and our economy is going to take a massive hit, do you think it is reasonable to ask people to support our own economy now and buy goods which are actually manufactured in Britain?

Disclosure - I voted Remain.

Earlier this year I went out of my way and bought a White Knight tumble dryer for a few quid more than I would have otherwise (not too much) as they are made in Halifax.

This weekend I chose cushions described as 'made in Britain'.

For years I have gone to local business first, looking for the nearest local plumber etc.

There is still some manufacture in the UK and it is worth supporting when practical If it is a great deal more or not suitable then you get what's best for you. However I think it is time to look at labels. And you know something, if it isn't available in the UK then why not look at prioritising spending in the Commonwealth?

Can anyone recommend a British made larder fridge? Still waiting for a reply from Ice King confirming where their fridges are manufactured.

sunnyspot · 28/06/2016 20:41

Thank you to all those posters trying to be more positive about this.
After all the divisiveness over the past week I was trying to do a pulling together thread.
I guess some people will be negative and cynical no matter what.
Off to eat some Co op biscuits , made in UK, and, before another flaming, they were cheap 😋

Like a little squirrel I shall be storing my acorns for winter. The last thing I want to be doing right now is spending money.

Twinchaos1 · 28/06/2016 20:46

I used to try and do this a bit. But honestly right now I have little interest in trying to protect England and Wales from their own choices, they were warned.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 28/06/2016 20:50

Those links don't excite me in anyway unfortunately. The clothing shops are particularly bad. Thanks for trying though! I can still buy British food at least.

MrsSpecter · 28/06/2016 20:57

Harsh, considering the impact the brexit will have on some people. It was only days ago. People are still reeling from the shock of it. People are panicked and scared. I think negativity is as good as you should expect under the circumstances.

I'll continue to buy what's cheapest.

sunnyspot · 28/06/2016 21:08

MrsSpecter. I can assure you that I feel as panicked and scared as the next person. I haven t slept properly since Thursday. But I just feel that rubbishing an attempt to pull us all together again and do something positive was pretty harsh too.
Maybe I am naive but there are nicer ways of saying you don t agree.

Thank you to all those posters trying to be more positive about this

Positivity, in and of itself, is of no actual use to anyone. You're trying to make your self feel better, rather than actually contribute anything useful.

GiddyGiddyGoat · 28/06/2016 21:17

It's not all nice and cosy. it's not 1940 and we can't just grow our own potatoes and "pull together". You sound like you just want to put your fingers in your ears and go lalalalala until it all goes away op. It's not going away any time soon and we're not all in this together, quite the opposite.

LisaMed1 · 28/06/2016 22:16

I've always believed in buying as local as possible where practical eg getting magazines held at the local newsagent instead of a subscription is a few pennies dearer but I can manage it (don't get many magazines) and it means that the newsagent is likely to still be there if and when I need it.

Sometimes it isn't possible to buy local/British, but if the gloom and doom sayers are right then we are in for a tough time and one of the things that will help is actually buying British.

LisaMed1 · 28/06/2016 22:19

I feel that we need to start cultivating an 'all in this together' vibe or we will be as stuffed as the worst forecast.

I am sort of hopeful, even though I think leaving Europe was a bad choice, but there are also all sorts of ethical and environmental reasons to try and keep purchases as close to home as practical I mean, there is even British grown tea these days and while I don't intend to go that far, it's worth remembering that there are options.

pearlylum · 28/06/2016 22:25

We are not all in this together though. The country is already fractured. If Scotland can't negotiate a way forward in Europe then it will be a break up of the Union to allow that.
We are most certainly not all in this together.
Buying local carrots isn't going to help that.

vichill · 28/06/2016 22:30

and now the £18b EDF project to provide cheaper energy is fucked lets reopen the pits!

LondonKiwiMummy · 28/06/2016 22:31

no. 100% no.

will keep buying French cheese, and New Zealand lamb or whatever the hell I please, until the trade tariffs get too high.

i don't see why i should support british products since it was decided that we would embark on a Great Leap Backwards.

somerset brie - ? not even "brie".

RudeElf · 28/06/2016 22:43

But I just feel that rubbishing an attempt to pull us all together again and do something positive was pretty harsh too.

Realistically you are pulling nothing together. Never mind "us all". This is one thread on one website that has reached maybe 40 people. Its a nice idea but it never had a hope in hell of achieving anything other than a few nods and you feeling a bit better. If thats all you wanted then fair enough. I'm sorry i cant help you feel better, i have slightly different shit to worry about as a result of the brexit than supporting the british economy when precisely none of that support will be used to fix the mess my country will be in.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 28/06/2016 23:42

What's wrong with buying a coffee and/or sandwich from a local cafe/baker rather than Costa or M&S?

As someone who regularly travels around the region, that's easier to do in some towns and cities than others. Easy in Newcastle, Durham (especially Durham), Morpeth and, even, Darlington. Difficult in places like Middlesbrough and Hartlepool. There's an indie place next to M&S in Sunderland, but yet to sample it as it's always (reassuringly) busy when I fancy it. I tend to pop to one of the museums there for passable non-chain coffee.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 28/06/2016 23:50

Got a mixed case with a massive discount (% off plus multibuy), last week. That case plus a £99 "reserva" case came to about £110 - for 18 bottles of pretty decent stuff.

Current poison is one of the Bacchus whites. All the aroma and tropical fruit of a sauvignon blanc, but drier. Slight brie taste in the background.

sunnyspot · 29/06/2016 15:25

Only just managed to get back to thread.
Just a word to User - Thank you for telling me how I feel. wouldn't t dream of telling anyone in RL how they feel, let alone anyone I haven t even met.
So Rather than you telling me, I ll tell you how I feel.
I began by feeling sick and intensely worried (which I still do). This turned to almost excessive anger towards those who voted to put us in this mess. This anger made me feel ill. So I decided to turn this anger into something more constructive - which is to genuine compassion for those poor people who could well lose their jobs through no fault of their own.
Hence to support them by trying to support our economy.
As I say , maybe naive, but at least it s borne out of compassion.
And again thanks to all those who understand.

OP posts:
RestlessTraveller · 29/06/2016 15:35

I actually can't bring myself to support my country at the minute, I'm too busy being ashamed of it.

VulcanWoman · 29/06/2016 15:39

Something I found out the other day, Alba and Bush electronics are made in Britain.

LurkingHusband · 29/06/2016 15:39

do you think it is reasonable to ask people to support our own economy now and buy goods which are actually manufactured in Britain?

Meanwhile, in other news, manufacturers realise they can sell any old shit they like, as long as it has a union jack on it much as they do now.

I give you the Austin Allegro.

sunnyspot · 29/06/2016 15:45

Plenty out there. Agreed some shit and expensive, but plenty of decent, good value stuff.

OP posts:
GiddyGiddyGoat · 29/06/2016 15:48

Stick with the anger op! It's OK to be angry when you feel powerless to do anything about a huge change that you didn't want but which will affect you in yet to be determined ways.
Rather than buying jam or whatever be vocal about your feelings, stand firm in the face of the backsliding racist and xenophobic crap issuing from the newly emboldened right wing - and stay fucking angry!
