Not a discussion on Leave v Remain. That s been done to death.
Now that the decision has been made, and our economy is going to take a massive hit, do you think it is reasonable to ask people to support our own economy now and buy goods which are actually manufactured in Britain?

OP posts:

Sorry to be so negative and cynical about your plan to save Britain by buying artisan cheese and Japanese cars.

RiverTam · 28/06/2016 19:44

Nice idea. Something makes me think that's whole lot of Leavers no more bought British than fly in the air, despite wittering on about British manufacturing and making Britian great again. Those who depend on cheap food from German supermarkets are probably going to be in for a big shock when we have to start paying import tax on all this stuff.

Misnomer · 28/06/2016 19:45

It's not a bad idea, OP. It's just not always straightforward possible.

Misnomer · 28/06/2016 19:45

Straightforward or possible, that should say.

eleven59 · 28/06/2016 19:47

My focus is not buying British, it is getting out of Britain for good.

Destinysdaughter · 28/06/2016 19:49

We live in a globalised economy now and our days of manufacturing are over I'm afraid . Read Naomi Klein No Logo if you want to understand how Western companies have moved their manufacturing to the east to massively reduce costs and increase profits.

The Brexit vote is a direct consequence of this

LilacSpunkMonkey · 28/06/2016 19:51

I can't drive.
I don't like brie of any kind.
I buy the apples my children like. I don't know where they're grown. We bought the local ones and the kids didn't like them.

I also buy what's cheapest most if the time. Being a single parent with three kids will kind of force that on you.

DiggersRest · 28/06/2016 19:53

Without jobs people will have to buy the cheapest things. Which are generally not made in Britain!

thisisafakename · 28/06/2016 19:53

Lucky that I was planning on buying both a Nissan AND a Toyota this evening. No need to thank me.

pearlylum · 28/06/2016 19:55

Yes i will support my country.

My country voted overwhelmingly to stay in Europe and i will support that decision to the hilt.

imother · 28/06/2016 19:56

Google is your friend!

bestcatintheworld · 28/06/2016 19:57

Used to, OP. In the last three days, I've gone out of my way to source Dutch vegetables and Spanish fruit to support the EU.

Birdsgottafly · 28/06/2016 19:59

We have local Crisp and Biscuit manufacturers, so I'll do my best for team GB.

What would be good is if everyone stops looking for as cheap labour as possible. They could pay an experienced Adult, to look after their children, rather than a teen.

We could pay workers decent rates for looking after our most Vulnerable.

I've vowed to support my local Chippy, my DD has pledged to support the local Chicken Shop, both are staffed by 'approved' immigrants, from outside the EU.

Madbengalmum · 28/06/2016 20:00

Kummerspeck, absolutely with you on that one.

MrsSpecter · 28/06/2016 20:01

I'm off to google whats made in NI. I'm fucked if i'm helping the rest of the UK out of the mess they've created.

redhat · 28/06/2016 20:02

I don't think there's anything wrong with buying British where possible. It will probably become a more viable option anyway as imported food starts to get more expensive. Certainly we can do little things like buying British strawberries rather than Spanish strawberries etc.

MrsSpecter · 28/06/2016 20:04

Tayto- not going to help my diet but i'll take the hit for my country Wink

Badbadbunny · 28/06/2016 20:08

Even easier is to buy stuff from local independent traders, that way the money stays in the local economy rather than the internationals and fatcats. What's wrong with buying a coffee and/or sandwich from a local cafe/baker rather than Costa or M&S? Or your fruit & veg from a farmshop or farmers market rather than Aldi or Lidl. Yes, I know we don't make as much anymore (though we're still one of the world's largest manufacturers), but if we all start small, buy local/independent, say food/drink to start, it may ripple out into other commodities again and re-energise local shopping areas.

Madbengalmum · 28/06/2016 20:13

Surely whatever you voted you would want to support your country?🤔

NoahVale · 28/06/2016 20:16

i always have tried to buy british fruit and veg

ToffeePenny · 28/06/2016 20:24

Lots of smaller manufacturers here
List of foods subject to protected status those with PDO are definitely completely made in uk.
As far as big brands go:
Weetabix (they also make ready brek and Alpen)
Heinz (not British brand but manufactures a lot in the UK)
United biscuits (Jaffa cakes and Jacobs crackers)
Birds Eye
I'll try and think of more...

Madbengalmum · 28/06/2016 20:27

It is certainly the most enviromentally friendly thing to do.
Eating foods in season helps keep costs down too.

Destinysdaughter · 28/06/2016 20:31

Good God WTF are 'approved immigrants'?

Pretty fucking ironic when fish n chips is an immigrant invention!!

Marmitelover55 · 28/06/2016 20:34

Shouldn't we be buying European goods to help persuade them that we are an important export market, so helping to secure a "better" but nowhere near as the one we've currently got trade deal?

Marmitelover55 · 28/06/2016 20:34

*good
