Not a discussion on Leave v Remain. That s been done to death.
Now that the decision has been made, and our economy is going to take a massive hit, do you think it is reasonable to ask people to support our own economy now and buy goods which are actually manufactured in Britain?

I think you got an unfair ride at the beginning of the thread sunny.

I already do what a PP said - use local cafe instead of coffee shop chains, buy from grocer & butcher & pop into local bakery every now & then.

In the middle of doing cosmetic work to my new house, and have hired local tradesmen for all jobs - all recommended through word of mouth and/or local advertising.

Every little helps!

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 20:03

Not just a rough ride at the beginning, but all the way through. Confused

Ignore the negative doom merchants, they are just dying for Armageddon so they've something else to bleat about.

HoneyDragon, I hope your business is not taking a hit at all Smile

I'm totally outing myself here but I work for a company that manufactures a building item. We employ several hundred staff in a rural and fairly deprived (apart from pockets of very rich bits) part of the country. We source almost all our raw materials within a hundred miles (apart from dyes and bits and bobs). Pretty much all the employees are local and we're doing pretty well and export across Europe.

So it is possible to buy some things that are British and not reliant on importing raw materials. Unfortunately we're owned by a mad European aristocrat who has pumped millions of his own money into the factory (along with a nice EU grant). He's now put a freeze on hiring and is threatening to sell up.

HolesInTheFloor · 29/06/2016 20:14

I didn't mean he's mad for wanting to sell the company btw. He's just mad in general.

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 20:16

Nae worries MrsSpecter!

Right back at ya, obvs!

HoneyDragon · 29/06/2016 20:17

We're entirely self funded. No grants, not EU help and a shit load of corporation tax. The uncertainty has hit us and other manufacturers, sure. What will make us suffer are all the doom mangers telling people not to spend money or commit to anything. But we've been around for longtime and a few recessions fx we manage a few more.

BarbarianMum · 29/06/2016 20:19

How about British manufacturers making things of a high quality which also provide value for money. Then everyone would buy them.

All the best HoneyDragon for the future.

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 20:23

And you are being equally as ignorant, quite frankly.

Am not a goady fucker at all and have posted quite reasonably & extensively.

The difference between me and you is that I am not just pouring doom and scorn all over people like the OP who are just trying to find the good & rays of light in all this.

TattyCat · 29/06/2016 20:25

BarbarianMum

We are a company making products from components entirely sourced in the UK. Well, England as it happens...

However, we can't compete price wise with Chinese or other imports but the quality of our products is second to none - we use the best available. The problem is that people will not invest in quality products and will happily take a poor quality item simply because it's cheap. For that simple reason, we don't target the high street market but have had to appeal to those with a large disposable income. I'd love the High Street to take our products!

Unfortunately the High Street sells cheap products at high prices, so for a few pounds more, people could get something that will last longer and not fall apart. The mark-up on the High Street is frightening and I can no longer bring myself to pay their prices for inferior products. I'd rather do without.

MrsSpecter · 29/06/2016 20:26

What have I been ignorant about? I havent stated that other people dont know their own feelings or why they are feeling negative. And no, that comment was not a reasonable post. It was a twatty thing to say on this thread.

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 20:30

Read the two posts I made on here MrsSpecter - two posts directly to the OP.

And then read the two posts you made to me.

The contrast is astounding.

VenusOfWillendorf · 29/06/2016 20:34

I buy Cathedral cheddar, Coleman's English mustard and Birds-Eye custard.
And I've got a pashley bike (no car).
But I don't live in the EU. Wonder if these things will get cheaper now Smile

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 29/06/2016 20:36

I do always try and buy British, although I do find it easier with food, as mentioned above, the heritage of a pair of jeans etc can be a bit murky.

Oddly enough, today was the first time ever I chose not to; I picked up a pack of strawberries that said 'Essex' on them and I thought, 60+% Leave? Maybe not.

Also, it'll be a cold day in hell before I set foot in a Wetherspoons again, however tempting their beer prices.

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 20:41

So all these posters who are stating that they are deliberately avoiding British produce purely because they disagree with the outcome of the referendum - are you actually for real or just being angry on the Internet?

Because that seems very churlish & counterproductive.

HoneyDragon · 29/06/2016 20:41

What if everyone involved in the growth and distribution of those strawberries had voted remain?

I did the exact opposite yesterday - I picked up onions, noticed where they were from (New Zealand.... just... why?) and bought British onions instead.

Go me! Grin

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 20:49

2StripedSocks - there were millions of 'taxpayers' who voted out btw...

TattyCat · 29/06/2016 20:52

2StripedSocks

Shropshire? That any good?!

expatinscotland · 29/06/2016 20:54

'Ditto the farmers. '

Fishers, too.

HoneyDragon · 29/06/2016 20:54

2Striped.....best you boycott all the supermarkets to as two of the counties our factory's are in voted Leave as the majority.

So online shopping for you from now on, but they'll have not not use their vans and walk it to you as they will be maintained by products using components from ..... Guess who? Grin
