To think seeing an older lady curtesy to KM is sad to see

Just saw a photo of an older lady curtesying to Kate Middleton, I felt so sad to see it. Sad as to why anyone would feel the need to bow down to another human being.

Every day I shake my head with who people admire in this world and how the general public swallow all these pr machines. 😒

Well, presumably she wanted to be there and to meet her, and was happy with the idea of curtseying? The idea of curtseying to a commoner is odd, though.

From what I could see she's the Vice Lord Lieutenant, so presumably she was happy to be appointed to this role & accept the formalities that go with it when greeting a member of the royal family who visits the county she represents. You don't have to bow or curtsey to a member of the royal family, a handshake is fine.

The royal family don't expect it. I've met a few of them and that is always in the briefing. We were taught how to do a full curtsey without falling over at school, times have changed.

The idea of curtsying is odd. Simple as that. Why would you curtsy to anyone? I wouldn't curtsy to a queen, a Pope or whoever else. Why?

I don't find it sad, as such, but I do find it kind of weird, whatever the age of the curtseyer.

Literal kowtowing could be kind of entertaining in its own way.

Obviously the lady was ok with it and she believes in the whole concept of royalty. I find it crazy but I guess it's no different to a religion! 😳

I dance, and we tend to bow/curtsey (probably more of a bob than the full show) to our partner. I don't think I would to royalty but maybe the person in question was happy to/was of a generation where it was expected?

younggirl that comment was horrible and misogynistic. No need at all. She's done what many women in this country do, marry, settle down and have children. And people who say she hasn't got responsibilities are just ignorant. Sure, it's nothing like our worlds but she does have duties. Her whole life is now a duty.

The only reason I mentioned the lady's age is because I have a lot of respect for older people and the fact they are around a while, it made it sadder to see her bowing to a work shy lazy younger person.

I would also think it's crazy no matter what the age but it's just sadder to me that she's an older lady. If that makes sense 😊

Curtseying to Kate Middleton is frankly no odder than curtseying to the queen, whose oft-remarked-on virtues consist entirely of saying absolutely nothing for the many, many decades of her reign.

MN is a funny old world. Almost any adjective may be applied to a Tory politician but bitch about the royals and there is always a forelock-tugger ready to accuse you of being meeeeean!

The whole Royal Family is rooted in misogyny, btw.

YABU to pick on this specific person doing it however because you've ruined your argument the person in question is part of the whole system of monarchy herself.

She's done what many women in this country do, marry, settle down and have children.

As a family they have no money worries whatsoever; they have several enormous houses paid for by the tax payer; their children will never have to worry about trying to get a job; they have the very best healthcare that tax payers money can buy; they go on several holidays every year; they have a crack team of nannies and tutors; their children will go to the best schools that money can buy; her handbags cost more than most items in my wardrobe put together.

On balance, not really what most women do.

I would ratger a smile over a curtsey any day. If I was KM I would have staff brief guests not to curtsey.
