To think seeing an older lady curtesy to KM is sad to see

Just saw a photo of an older lady curtesying to Kate Middleton, I felt so sad to see it. Sad as to why anyone would feel the need to bow down to another human being.

Every day I shake my head with who people admire in this world and how the general public swallow all these pr machines. 😒

She then worked for her parents, like very many children of business owners do.

When Prince William took the job with the EAAA, he was criticised here on MN for taking away a job when another pilot could do it.

I always get the impression on these threads that for some people that there is nothing that they could do right.

I don't think she needed to do anything 'high-flying' to avoid this bad PR. If she'd done anything at all during her long twenties, she wouldn't have this image problem and could settle down to baby-making and ribbon-cutting much more admired.

She's used the system to her advantage. It's the system you are criticising, not the person.

Having a baby with the man you love doesn't make you a sodding broodmare. Hands up if you're a broodmare ladies Hmm. I'm sure continuing the line is important to royals but we don't sodding live in a Game of Thrones-esque world in which the brides sole duty is to pro-create.

They could all abdicate, Dino. That would satisfy me.

I never much admire people who play systems to their advantage Time.

You could tell me that I should criticize the UK tax system and not blame Amazon, Boots, Starbucks etc for their epic tax avoidance. But I blame both.

(And taking advantage of a 'system' to avoid working is only an 'advantage' if you're a workshy lazy bastard IMHO)

Exactly. And all this talk about she should have done such and such before , why? There's plenty of women on here who have worked little or never worked at all, settled down and started a family. The difference here is she was thrown into the spot light and is now a duchess, that's an issue for people and that's fair enough - but I'm not sure why she would suddenly be more worthy had she worked a 40 hour week in accounting.

The argument against the monarchy is a valid one, but as soon as you start slagging off a single part of the monarchy and picking apart her as a person it becomes laughable.

Grays we don't, but they do. That's the point!

But surely the point of the monarchy is that they serve as figureheads and role models.

As soon as the monarchy consists of visibly deeply flawed people, it begins to look unjustifiable.

Why people are so keen to fawn over the Windsors - any of them - is totally baffling to me. It's 20 frigging 16. I can only assume that they are also part of historical reenactment societies where they always ask for the part of serf.

I think curtsying to any member of the royal family is repellant. Not just KM.

Back in the 70s we used to remind the republicans about the 4 scariest words in English - "President Foot, President Thatcher"

Oh yes because, fucking hell - What a travesty it would be to have a democratically elected head of state!!!!!!!!

As if the Queen (who supposedly doesn't get involved in politics), has the final say on UK policy. Fucking laughable.

And I am sorry that you seem to feel sensitive about the idea of being a SAHM and are reading things into mine and other posters' comments that are simply not there. The royal family is a business and needs to succession plan like any other business. As I said, Duana's own comments on this were very enlightening.

I find it laughable that people on MN get wound up about people on benefits, for example, then leap to the defense of a woman in a million pound hat. Probably pilfered from a poor country...

I wouldn't curtsey to Kate (or Camilla!!!). That said, I might to the Queen (but would probably manage a half arsed bob and go over on my ankle or something). I shook Diana's hand once (at a Nursery I worked at) she was so thin (circa 1988).

Yanbu OP. Another vote for a republic here.

According to that 'authoritative source' wikipedia, Kate's not too distant relative Arthur Ransome was a bit of a Bolshevik sympathiser who married Leon Trotsky's secretary. Interesting family.

YANBU I don't believe in royalty. Have no interest in so called Royals and would not be interested in meeting them let alone bowing before them. Ridiculous notion.

I'd curtsy to the Queen; after 45 years of tireless service she's earnt it.

KM? I'd struggle.

MN is a funny old world. Almost any adjective may be applied to a Tory politician but bitch about the royals and there is always a forelock-tugger ready to accuse you of being meeeeean!

To be fair, some of the comments you've made are pretty vicious and would be unacceptable, regardless of who they refer to. That's from someone who isn't a 'forelock-tugger'.

I've curtseyed to the Queen, Princess Diana (under duress but my grandmother was a stickler for that sort of thing and would have slapped me senseless later on if I didn't do it) and a few other royal types. I was a child/surly goth teenager at the time so just did as I was told.

Due to my job (historian), I still occasionally hang about palaces and the back stairs of royal residences nowadays but have yet to encounter any royals roaming at large in the wild. I have no plans to curtsey though if/when I bump into any of them - I'm not sure that people still do? The only one I'm really keen to meet is Prince Harry though and he'd probably die of embarrassment if someone curtseyed to him.

Curtseying to someone who happened to be born or married into a certain family is ludicrous. People may as well bow to their landlords/employers.

I'm sure KM is a very nice person as are many of the royal family but while they certainly have more money, they are certainly not better than us. Therefore when they bow to me, I shall bow in return.

I was a ballerina and taught it for many years, so yes, lots of people (well... girls mainly) curtsy in real life!
I'd have to do a big reverence Smile
