AIBU to as ask my SIL to drop my twins home?
My two have been at SIL overnight (really unusual occurrence) I arranged to pick them up at midday but when I called to say I was about to leave home she said her big sis was on her way with her two kids so I shouldn't come just yet.
I'm really grateful that she's had them overnight but I'm tired and it's getting dark is at terrible to ask her or other SIL to drop them home as I hate driving when it's getting dark

A bit unreasonable. Any reason why you won't drive when it's getting dark? Are you a safe driver the rest of the time? If so then just turn the lights on and drive.
If it's going to be really difficult for you then ring and ask her to bring them back

I would just call and say, I'm coming to get them now hope that's ok, see you soon. If she says come later then say you hate to drive in the dark, and ask if she would drop them.

Yes, I'm worried my two will be tired but I'm trying to be nice as my SIL's complain that I'm too uptight and they want to spend time with twins but really just want them home for school 2moro.
I hate driving at night but I do it when called for just though it wasn't called for this evening as planned to pick them up earlier...

Just text her and say "ok, why don't you drop them back when you're ready?" If she says no then she isn't being unreasonable.

Go and pick them up - she has looked after them for you so I think YABU to expect her to drop them off when it was agreed you would collect them

Then just explain its a school night and they need to be home by xxxtime. If she can't drop them home, say you'll be there to collect. It's a school night. Who cares if she thinks you're uptight? She's not the one wrangling them out of bed tired and grumpy in the morning!!!

For those who don't understand about not driving in the dark, it's not about being scared, it is that for many people particularly those of us over 40, their eyesight is much worse in the dark and they find it much more challenging. Especially an unfamiliar journey.

Are you in the UK? It won't be dark for ages!

Just go and get them. They are your children and you need them home. They probably want to come home anyway, if they aren't used to being away.

Can you negotiate a pick up time so that the other SIL and her DC get to at least see them but you can still drive before it gets really dark? Shouldn't be dark for a bit. You could go over now?
I don't like driving at night either so YANBU for everyone to take that into account. It does affect safety, especially for some people, and not everyone is happy with that.

YANBU asking them to drop of as long as you're prepared for a no.
