Disability cuts

Springsummer123 · 12/03/2016 08:35

Name changed as obviously sensitive subject and don't want to put myself .i possibly don't know enough on this so am interested in other views . I may have only seen a small percentage - I'm insure ?
I have 2 sisters . One has had a stroke .which had devestated the family . She is quite well off yet has been upset she will loose a benifit that I believe is for her husband being her carer . Ok discussion to try to ease her fears it's very clear they don't need it . They can afford all care , holidays good standard of living on her payout . Number of property's all fully owned out right . Yet she thinks she should get it as some sort of compensation for the stroke .i can see why she would be angry with life but she doesn't need the money ? Surely it's right to be cut ?
My second sister works with adults with autism . She was saying they are struggling to spend the last part of their money entitlement before the next claim . I know they have holidays etc and their is still money over ( my sister accompanied many times )
So I'm wondering in some cases should the disability benifits be cut ?

Let it stand.

Samcro · 12/03/2016 11:10

please let it stay....

rosebiggs · 12/03/2016 11:12

I think that the thread should stay because ironically it's raising awareness of the cuts.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 12/03/2016 11:13

Where is the op?
I might actually be a little more inclined to believe her fairystory if she had the balls to come back and apologise instead of all this cowardly namechanging shenaningans

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:14

Thank you for taking the time to review this Dawn. I appreciate it isn't easy for you, but I'd be grateful if you allowed it to stand.

MrsVamos · 12/03/2016 11:15

Let the thread stay.

Agree with hobnobs. OP should have the decency to come back to thread in usual nn and apologise.

then I know to avoid in future

AYD2MITalkTalk · 12/03/2016 11:18

Hey OP, if there's a minute chance you're still reading.

I use my £40 a week DLA to pay for the weekly psychology sessions that my psychologist says I need and the mental health services say I need, but which I can't get on the NHS thanks to the mental health cuts. I have a psychotic depressive illness, have recently tried to kill myself, and was made to spend some time on a psychiatric ward a year ago, when mental health nurses visiting my home every day turned out not to be enough and I made a serious suicide attempt.

I can afford the sessions because the psychologist agreed to see me half price.

BTW I'm an honest person who contacted the DWP several years ago to tell them that I believed I was no longer eligible for the higher rate because my needs had changed (which also caused DP's carers allowance to stop). And you know what? If I was filthy stinking rich, I would still claim it because THE NHS AND CARE SYSTEMS WHICH ARE SUPPOSED TO PROVIDE THESE SERVICES ARE NOT PROVIDING THEM. Why should I personally have to cover the costs of my illness, when the NHS care we are all entitled to and which the British people have built up and paid for for generations has been stolen from us by the Tories to give business opportunities to their mates and tax cuts to the rich?

ILeaveTheRoomForTwoMinutes · 12/03/2016 11:19

Surely the biscuits and ODFODs is MNers expressions of disgust. Which clearly shows support for the oppersite view of the OP, and as a pp said shows there are plenty of people who do not share this view. Which if you are effected by any of these cuts, you may already feel victimised.

Seeing a thread like this can add to that, but I would hope that seeing so many people disapprove of the OPs views, might feel a little better, that not everyone are complete twats.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:19

I'd be happy to accept an apology even under her name change. She realistically isn't going to show us her regular name.

AYD2MITalkTalk · 12/03/2016 11:19

And yes, let the thread stand. I hope OP is ashamed.

SilverDragonfly1 · 12/03/2016 11:20

Dawn In that case it illustrates very well how even people who are generally pleasant can have extremely prejudiced views, largely governed by the media, rather than thinking and researching their own opinions.

Thread should stand.

MrsVamos · 12/03/2016 11:22

'no malice intended' ?

Why post in the first place then ?

Did she think she was going to have a majority agreeing with her that the disability cuts are necessary ?

Really ?

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:22

Well said Silver

MrsVamos · 12/03/2016 11:23

Well said, SilverDragonfly1.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:24

MrsVamos I dontdon't think, sadly, that it's inconceivable that she thought some people might agree with her.

marsybum · 12/03/2016 11:24

I get disability benefits (PIP) and yes I could possibly manage without them, as in we would be able to afford to eat - to start with!

Without my Motability car I wouldn't be able to get to work, as I can't take my mobility scooter on the bus, but the bus stop is too far for me to walk, so I would also lose that income as my manager would love an excuse to get rid of the cripple...
We would then not be able to afford the rent and bills, so what next? The workhouse?

I think the thread should stay, many people think disabled people get too much - 'free' car (that isn't free) parking which means we're closer to where we need to be, do selfish in rain, except without that space I wouldn't be able to get there.. I'm so lucky to be in constant pain aren't I?

InvictusVersinium · 12/03/2016 11:27

Yes, exactly to what silver said.

If OP isn't a goady fucker then this thread just exemplifies "everyday ableism".

Samcro · 12/03/2016 11:27

see thats the thing, if my adult childs benefits are cut, they will be sunk. they need a WAV a large one, cos of their seating system, they need 24/7 care.
cutting the benefits will just mean they will end up in residential quicker.
and without they can't go out, as busses are a no no due to only having one wc space.

PageStillNotFound404 · 12/03/2016 11:28

Perfectly put SilverDragonfly.

Thanks again Dawn. I remain unchanged in my opinion that the thread should stand.

In life, there are consequences. You don't get to be a twat about something through thoughtlessness or prejudice and then wipe it clean as if it never happened. This isn't an Etch-a-Sketch.

MrsVamos · 12/03/2016 11:28

I know, sooty. Sad

I actually clicked to read this thread thinking someone had read the news and was appalled about the cuts.

Just shows how wrong you can be.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:29

DLA /PIP is about far more than keeping a roof over people's heads. It's about offering dignity, independence and equality of opportunity. All cases are different and to remove it reduces people's quality of life and promotes discrimination and exclusion.

expatinscotland · 12/03/2016 11:31

Oh, so this is being taken down anyway? Good. Now I can say it: fuck you, you goady fucker.

AndNowItsSeven · 12/03/2016 11:33

Yes please let this thread stay. Yesterday the dwp issued a press release to say people using aids for toilet and dressing needs
And claiming pip would have their points halved and could therefore lose entitlement to pip. With passported benefits this could mean a loss of £150 a week.
As it was front page news I am sure you are all aware anyway.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:34

No expat

Dawn said it's staying if that's the majority opinion.

DawnMumsnet · 12/03/2016 11:37

@SilverDragonfly1

Dawn In that case it illustrates very well how even people who are generally pleasant can have extremely prejudiced views, largely governed by the media, rather than thinking and researching their own opinions.

Thread should stand.

We think this just about sums it up, unfortunately. Sad

Looks like the majority view is that the thread should stay, so we'll be leaving it to stand for now. To all those saying it would be good if the OP could come back to the thread, it's possible that she's not even aware that it's still running as the last correspondence from us was to say that we'd be deleting it. We've been back in touch now to explain the situation.
