Disability cuts

Name changed as obviously sensitive subject and don't want to put myself .i possibly don't know enough on this so am interested in other views . I may have only seen a small percentage - I'm insure ?
I have 2 sisters . One has had a stroke .which had devestated the family . She is quite well off yet has been upset she will loose a benifit that I believe is for her husband being her carer . Ok discussion to try to ease her fears it's very clear they don't need it . They can afford all care , holidays good standard of living on her payout . Number of property's all fully owned out right . Yet she thinks she should get it as some sort of compensation for the stroke .i can see why she would be angry with life but she doesn't need the money ? Surely it's right to be cut ?
My second sister works with adults with autism . She was saying they are struggling to spend the last part of their money entitlement before the next claim . I know they have holidays etc and their is still money over ( my sister accompanied many times )
So I'm wondering in some cases should the disability benifits be cut ?

This is the problem with name changing here.

Pps can spouted bigoted, disgusting views and we have no idea who they are, then go onto another thread and continue being their 'other/usual' persona.

I'm appalled that op might be someone I've had a lovely 'chat' with on another thread, not knowing how she really feels about certain things.

MrsVamos · 12/03/2016 11:39

Thank you, Dawn.

Really, thank you.

At the very least if this thread raises awareness about the cuts to disability benefits then at least something (I want to say good ?) comes out of it.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:41

I agree MrsVamos but if Dawn says she doesn't have form I believe that.

Some serial name changers who do it to be goady fuckers have very distinctive writing styles of course.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:42

And again - thank you Dawn for listening to us. Flowers

PageStillNotFound404 · 12/03/2016 11:43

Very much appreciated Dawn - thank you.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/03/2016 11:45

Bloody hell

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/03/2016 11:46

That was referring to OP of course.

MrsVamos · 12/03/2016 11:46

Appreciate that sooty but it only takes once.

Am prepared to accept op will realise she made a horrendous mistake.

ILeaveTheRoomForTwoMinutes · 12/03/2016 11:46

Thank you dawn

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/03/2016 11:47

Personally I don't think crap like this should stand but am obviously a minority and came late to the party.

BankWadger · 12/03/2016 11:47

I've had a horrible start to this year on top of many hard and at times plain awful years directly due to dla/pip changes. It really fucking hurts reading an OP like this, but seeing the out pouring of people disagreeing, knowing my family isn't alone, really really helps.
Deleting us, for whatever spurious reason, does more damage than good.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/03/2016 11:47

It might be educational but it will make certain people feel really bad that they want to take their kids benefits away.

InvictusVersinium · 12/03/2016 11:47

Why, fanjo?

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:48

I hope the thread will have opened her eyes to the strength of feeling MrsVamos

Bank glad you've been encouraged by the support. Flowers

SilverDragonfly1 · 12/03/2016 11:50

Thank you Dawn. I do feel sorry for the OP from the POV that she is probably essentially well meaning (although innocently posting something like that on AIBU suggests limited Mumsnet experience) and is now being told off as a stand in for all the other people who have hurt and infuriated other posters in the past.

But it is so important not to quash debate- even rancorous debate- about disability and benefits issues, because the government and media are already doing their best to do that. I would rather have a dozen goady threads that contain some good info and support than one perfectly moderated thread that offends no one.

MrsVamos · 12/03/2016 11:50

Fanjo

Crap like ops shouldn't be said in the first place.

At least while the thread stays people can see that a lot of people don't agree and can learn about the cuts and how they are and will affect people.

Who knows ? Maybe people will be sufficiently outraged that in a weeks time Mr Osborne will back track out of this one ?

I dream. A lot....

SilverDragonfly1 · 12/03/2016 11:51

Cross post with Bankwadger- precisely this!

Hamishandthefoxes · 12/03/2016 11:51

Op - David Cameron is a multimillionaire. His father is a multimillionaire to the extent of using tax havens. He claimed dla for his son. He didn't claim the other benefits because he wasn't entitled to do so. Why should your sister take a different approach to this to the prime minister?

JoffreyBaratheon · 12/03/2016 11:52

My son has atypical autism and a couple of other problems and we're waiting to hear as our DLA was forcibly changed to PIP (goalposts moved, lifelong awarded been taken from him - see other thread).

Holidays? Last year we didn't have one. Not even a daytrip.

In the past we have sometimes managed two days in a tent on cheap camp sites.

If he loses his DLA I actually have no idea how we will survive as a family. I gave up a career years ago to be his carer - too long out to get back in even if I could. And his dad is on minimum wage. I don;t know how we'll pay the rent and the bills and we are probably about to lose the car as well.

MrsVamos · 12/03/2016 11:52

I hope so sooty.

I just wish there was enough strength of feeling for it to be challenged and stopped.

I don't think there is. Sad

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/03/2016 11:53

Hardly anyone challenges the threads. They just hide them or ignore them. And I'm sure lots also agree with OP, sadly.

elementofsurprise · 12/03/2016 11:55

Since 2010 disability benefits have become increasingly all-or-nothing. The Tories say "we will support the most disabled ". This is true - it is like a token group they can point at and say "look, we're so civilised, we help these poor people!". But everyone else who is marginally less disabled can go to hell.

I currently qualify for quite a lot in disability benefits. I can't get any mental health treatment, btw, despite asking for years (my actual issues are to do with depression and trauma type stuff, but they think I am a nasty piece of work who's too far gone to bother to help. I think their low judgement of me actually helps with the benefit side though - they may think I am too dangerous (!?!) to be in the workplace).

Anyway, I am able to save quite easily whilst on this money - although to be fair I don't drive/run a car or have a large rent shortfall like many do. My disability also doesn't cost much - I used to pay for private therapy (£40/week). But if I was this disabled by a physical disability I'd barely have enough to make ends meet (buying equipment, paying for care etc).

Also, when I am deemed to be marginally less disabled I will suddenly lose LOADS of money. The next "step down" in benefits is huge. Not only would I lose one particular benefit (PIP) but that would have a knock-on effect on ESA rates (which would drop dramatically) and the worst would be Housing Benefit - I'd suddenly be expected to houseshare rather than have my own flat.

So since the Tories got involved, there is the odd situation like mine where the person doesn't need quite so much money. On the other side of the equation are thousands of people who are now suffering unable to make ends meet.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2016 11:55

Plenty challenged this one Fanjo
