At the pool - other adult behavior

I was at our local leisure centre today. It's a private hotel one, if it makes a difference, so it's users would be a combination of members, hotel guests and you can also pay for a day pass. I'm a member.
It was busy as it is normally on a Saturday afternoon. There were two guys I hadn't seen before in the lanes section (where you can do serious swimming, up one side and down the other). I wanted to do 50 or so lengths but it was tricky as it was me and them in the section and they were doing handstands, diving in (under the no diving sign) and generally getting in the way. I get this with children sometimes but not usually adults in their 30s or 40s.
Im laid back so I just sort of went around them as best I could. They were swimming under me and making me nervous. So after about 20 lengths I gave up.
I went into the steamroom and they arrived in about 10 minutes after and stared at me up and down in a pervy uncomfortable way.
So they it clicked that the pool annoyance was probably on purpose.
I left and was pissed off that it made me felt so uncomfortable.
I was pissed off that I couldn't do anything to stop them staring, that they'd intrrupted my swim and that I couldnt complain to the lifeguard while I was there as it would have been awkward, or as I was leaving as I didn't want to appear racist. The two guys were speaking Arabic to each other which is pretty uncommon in my town.
My dh went to the pool after I got home, for his turn at a bit of child free peace and I described them to him. He came back and said they were in the hot tub (this was 2 hours after me) so they'd probably got a day pass and stayed to piss off more people.
Was I unreasonable to just leave and say nothing and if so, what should I have done or said? Either to them or to the lifeguard. I feel like such a chicken.

Today 21:26 BuzzardBird

Give me an example of the words, I can speak Arabic. Though in my experience a lot of Arabics are not Muslim.

You called them arabics

BuzzardBird · 06/02/2016 21:37

Some men pissed you off, no reason to make it into a cultural thing.

ShamefulPlaceMarker · 06/02/2016 21:38

Xalling people Arabics flaws your argument that you know what you're talking about regarding Arabs and Arabic (the language)

Fairenuff · 06/02/2016 21:38

It's not too late to phone the hotel OP and tell them what happened. There may have been other complaints.

BuzzardBird · 06/02/2016 21:38

Shameful don't confuse typos with ignorance.

BuzzardBird · 06/02/2016 21:40

You can't edit on MN and I am a touchtyper due to sight problems. It doesn't make my statements any less true.

ShamefulPlaceMarker · 06/02/2016 21:41

I'm not buzzard I read what I saw, and took from that. How am I supposed to know it was a typo? Didn't seem like one!

2ManySweets · 06/02/2016 21:41

buzzardbird climb down; I lived in Finsbury Park for > 1 year but can comfortably recognise Somali even though I've got zero qualifications in it.

OP: dickheads in the pool need reporting on, esp if there's a potential sexual element to it. As a PP said, forget what language they're speaking or where you think they're from - let the staff sort out the annoyance.

Vintage45 · 06/02/2016 21:42

Its human nature to maybe read something then see something and put two and two together, maybe the OP did come up with 5 but in her mind there was something similar happening.

BuzzardBird · 06/02/2016 21:42

You're just repeating what I said then

CousCousDefinitely · 06/02/2016 21:45

I didn't read about the 10 year old boy. I had read something about women in pools in Germany.
No, there no asylum seekers here or anywhere near. Probably explains my politically incorrecness in how to refer to people that give the impression they may be speaking Arabic, without me knowing the nuances of the language, only from what I hear in mainstream news.
It's not bull shit Buzzard. It really isn't.
If I gave you the number of the pool, you could ring them, ask were there a couple of guys who stayed for hours in the pool, and maybe others complained about them, I wouldn't be surprised. Would that make you happy?

Ditchthepitch · 06/02/2016 21:45

Shameful give it a rest. Buzzard said it was a typo.
OP, calling such behaviour a 'muslim thing' is pretty pathetic.
You start a thread on MN to spout rubbish about what you think is a 'muslim thing', but didnt have the courage to go and make a complaint, which you should have done! Hmm

But is this hanging around pool "thing" and being a nuisance a known thing that single male recently arrived Muslims do?

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous questions I've read on here.

The men were unreasonable for poor lane etiquette in the pool (one of my pet hates). You were unreasonable to assume they were Muslim asylum seekers and that somehow that was related to their behaviour in the pool.

user7755 · 06/02/2016 21:54

Have I missed something? They were annoying, they were lecherous = you were irritated, you went home.

They were still being annoying when your DH went later.

Therefore they were deliberately trying to piss people off because they were arabic.

It just seems like a bit of a leap of logic.

When I go to the gym, there are often people behaving like that - its never crossed my mind that they are doing it deliberately or because the belong to a particular demographic group.

Chillyegg · 06/02/2016 21:57

Sigh. ..

WineIsMyMainVice · 06/02/2016 21:59

"We are no where near asylum seekers here"

And you know this how?!?

lazyarse123 · 06/02/2016 21:59

Fucks sake what's wrong with everybody. Two pervs in a pool, op you should have just reported it to staff at pool. Obviously it's not pc to mention race or religion (ironic) before you know it you won't be allowed to mention gender. Get a fucking grip everyone.

bakeoffcake · 06/02/2016 22:00
Confused

How do you know they are "single recently arrived Muslims"

If they were annoying you and you felt they were doing it deliberately you should definitely tell someone.

However you've made so many ridiculous, stupid, assumptions about these men.

CousCousDefinitely · 06/02/2016 22:03

No, I didn't not think they were asylum seekers Purple. Pretty sure they weren't as there are none near here or even close.
Thinking about it since, I think if they were local people, or kids, I would have been more inclined to complain. If it was kids I would have probably said it directly to them, adults, I may have mentioned to the staff. But the fact it wasn't people I knew or from the area and I wondered was it cultural behavior and excusable as being their own ignorance in how to behave, was that what made me less likely to complain due to a fear of being seen as racist, does that make sense?
I do understand that I may be coming across as ignorant myself. Ive had very little exposure to other cultures and a lot of what I know is through media. I do recognise Arabic though. And Urdu, surprisingly maybe, from a colleague.
If this happens again, I will report on my way out!

Aaah. This takes me back to the heady old days of my local forum where people used to mention that Muslims were targeting and abusing local schoolgirls and they were shouted down as racist agitators. I live near Rotherham...

What happened to the old Mumsnet 'I believe you' adage? We all know that gets scrapped as soon as it comes up against the new left wing hierarchy of human worth which has Muslims somewhere at the top and women languishing close to the bottom.

Lanark2 · 06/02/2016 22:04

Being a tit to get attention from women is pretty universal.

CousCousDefinitely · 06/02/2016 22:05

Winels, there's no asylum reception centres within about 60km of here.

OP posts:
Ditchthepitch · 06/02/2016 22:05

It was not neccessary at all to mention race and religion in this instance.

Woodhill · 06/02/2016 22:05

I think you should have complained.
