To wish I lived in Gavin & Stacey?

I'm poorly so on the sofa watching Gavin & Stacey.

I love it. I wish my family and DH's family were like that. The one where they order the Indian takeaway and the Christmas one always make me think it looks so cosy!

What TV show would you 'live' in??

Serious question: what happened on THE camping trip? Hmm

Pipbin · 15/10/2015 23:49

I understood the Owain Hughes joke being that there was no joke.

DannyFishcharge · 15/10/2015 23:56

I think the fishing trip had something to do with soup and keeping warm... Whatever it was was apparently legal in that country Confused

DriverSurpriseMe · 15/10/2015 23:59

No, the Owain Hughes joke was that "Owain Hughes" sounded like "Owing Hughes [as in money]".

It's a pretty unfunny joke, and I suppose that was the point!

FloraDiesEarly · 16/10/2015 00:14

Thanks for responses re Owain! I think I watched the final episode the other day and I'd forgotten that John Prescott turns up to Nessa's wedding.

Also in one of the first episodes where Bryn gives Stacey a rape alarm and tells her to test it out. She can't get it to go off I don't think, so Nessa ends up pinning him to the wall shouting "you piece of shit" or something Grin

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 16/10/2015 00:21

Whenever we watch Coronation St and there's a scene with Leanne, DH turns to me and says "Leanne Battersby, from Corrie" a la Bryn

Grin

Melanie Walters (Gwen) has a holiday home in Pembrokeshire near a relative of mine, and is apparently very gracious about repeatedly being asked for omelettes when she's out and about.

OnlyLovers · 16/10/2015 10:41

I've never seen Gavin & Stacey [freak] but to answer your question, I'd live in Borgen (Birgitte's family home or bachelorette flat, I'm not fussy). Or either the Copenhagen flat or the big bohemian rambling manor house from The Legacy.

Gorgeous gorgeous tasteful Scandi interiors and the men are hot stuff.

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 16/10/2015 11:05

Melanie Walters also runs Pilates classes in Swansea. I think the episode where she's in bathers on Barry Island was a fab advert for the benefits tbh :)

Costacoffeeplease · 16/10/2015 11:17

Another Gavin and Stacey fun - and especially Pete and Dawn - when smithy shows dawn the scan picture of the baby and she say 'looks like you Pete, only taller'

When Mick and pam get up and sing at G&S's wedding reception

When dawn and pam are talking about Dave coaches and how dawn's always had a thing for gingers - charles dance, Antony Wirral Thomson

So many hilarious bits

wowfudge · 16/10/2015 11:25

There's so much of it that's hilarious and all the little bits and pieces which are true to life. I think most people will recognise something of somebody they know in at least one of the characters.

I always thought that Gwen's omelettes must actually be pretty vile packaged up in foil and not eaten while fresh though.

Deano and baby Neil eyeballing each other Grin

Janeymoo50 · 16/10/2015 12:32

I never realised that some of the families were named after serial killers (until someone told me!). I got into G and S quite some time after it was on, really clever writing.

LookAtAllThesePhucksIGive · 16/10/2015 13:01

Oh my kind of thread!

I love the bit when Nessa asks Pam for two AA batteries. She has none so Nessa takes them from the remote. Stacey asks her what she wants them for to which she replies "Just some me time Stace".
Literally 30 seconds later she reappears in the kitchen saying that she didn't need them as it got and nonchalantly rinses her two fingers under the tap. Pam passes her the tea towel without batting an eyelid. :o

LookAtAllThesePhucksIGive · 16/10/2015 13:02

Gwen not Pam.

NoManJan · 16/10/2015 13:09

I love Gavin and Stacey, I wish they'd do another Christmas special to see what everyone is up to now! We've watched the box set so much that one of the discs is worn out.

My favourite part is right at the start of episode 1 where Stacy bumps into Doris and she says not to go giving him anything on the first date...other than a kiss, a cuddle and a cheeky finger of course Grin

I'm booking the Barry Island tour for DH's birthday so has some good ideas for clues I can wrap up/give him I'd be ever so grateful.

Sillyshell · 16/10/2015 13:18

My dad was at school with Larry Lamb, bit random but true fact!

jorahmormont · 16/10/2015 13:20

The "owe wayne hughes" explanation is incorrect - for one thing, owain is pronounced "oh-wine".

Ruth Jones and James Corden actually came out at one point and said there is no joke - it's reflective of a lot of very Welsh communities where there are in jokes that no-one else understands, and no-one actually remembers - everyone still says it, but no-one knows what it means.

LookAtAllThesePhucksIGive · 16/10/2015 13:30

Oh Stace, don't wake him. Right now you look like shit and last night you looked cracking. Let that be the memory. :o

LookAtAllThesePhucksIGive · 16/10/2015 13:37

The only things I hate about G&S are the song over the end credits and it's not on anymore.

FloraDiesEarly · 16/10/2015 13:41

Ahh I saw that ep recently thoseawfulcurtains and thought she looked amazing! Definitely a walking advert for Pilates.

Libitina · 16/10/2015 14:02

I want to live in Scrubs or Modern Family. Or Anne of Green Gables mmmm Gilbert

Want2bSupermum · 16/10/2015 14:15

I went to school in Wales for a few years. There were a few days girls like Nessa. They all came from different towns and they hated each other. When I watched G&S the welsh characters were spot on.

James cordon has done well for himself here in the US. People like his humour.

LeSquigh · 16/10/2015 14:23

Ah I LOVE G&S. I am normally a cold hearted cow but this makes even me feel warm and fuzzy. I watched it originally shortly after its televised run and have watched all episodes at least 20 times since. I know it word for word.

Quite seriously, it helped me through a very bad time in my life and made me believe in true love again. I found my own "Gavin" a few years ago and I moved to be with him. A much shorter distance than Billericay to Barry but pretty monumental for me!

The writers are amazing. James Corden doesn't sit well with everyone but for me he can do no wrong. Anyone who can have a hand in writing something so absolutely lovely (and funny) is well alright with me. I will continue to re watch it at every opportunity. I have often felt mad to want to live in Gavin and Stacey, I'm pleased to see I'm not alone in this! I have far too many favourite moments to choose from so I won't even try.

LeSquigh · 16/10/2015 14:24

In addition, Julia Davis who plays Dawn is a legend. If you haven't checked it out and don't mind a bit of dark humour then definitely have a look at Nighty Night, which she wrote and starred in.
