Disgusted at the new Rihanna video!!

I'm not going to link, but I am absolutely disgusted at the new Rihanna video. Extreme sexual violence. Especially coming from Rihanna who has been a victim of domestic violence herself. Who would make a video like this? I just dispair at what is becoming mainstream.

Sorry, rant over, but this just really upsets me.

I don't identify as a feminist either. I'm not a woman hater, at all, I can see issues that women go through, especially in some countries and it does get me angry. however, I see feminism as religion. I can see it has some genuinley good princples, but I find it too hypocritical to apply to my own life. So I say i believe in equality, that means women's rights (and men's - yes they haven't had to deal with most issues women have, but there are issues against men as well), LGBT rights, no racisim, animal rights etc.

I haven't seen this new video - she's always been a bit 'out there', so it's interesting to see what she may have done that's 'too far'. I'm off to watch the video (with an open mind).

Crocodopolis · 03/07/2015 11:34

What's wrong with shaming people?

If I were going to lie about something, it wouldn't be about not watching music videos.

Crocodopolis · 03/07/2015 11:34

Oooops. I meant to quote the comment about not watching music videos.

CatMilkMan · 03/07/2015 11:36

It's a pop princess trying to convince people she is a gangster thug bad girl.

SeeChooJimmy · 03/07/2015 11:39

just went and watched it and honestly cant see it being any different from anything else she's done, I thought it was a good video, she looks incredible in it her figure is amazing! I have honestly never met people in rl that get so up in arms about things like this its a music video, if you don't like her stuff why go watch it? with it's content it's hardly being played all over mainstream.

Pony74 · 03/07/2015 11:39

Just watched it. Agree with OP. What a fucked up thing to do to make sure her new album doesn't flop.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 03/07/2015 11:39

Just watched the video. It's dark, but I've seen worse. Couldn't get past those boobs, they seemed to be cemented on to her! Wish mine could defy gravity like that.... Anyway, it's just some psuedo-ganster nonsense, wasn't super violent, seemed to be telling some sort of story at least - followed the song. Not her best work in my opinion, but failed to get outraged or disgusted about it on any level.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2015 11:40

I actually do assume every woman is a feminist and I try to assume that all men are. Just as I start with the point of view that people aren't homophobic or racist - and then adapt as necessary when life disappoints me.

I find it rather offensive that you equate people who do not identify as a feminist with racist or homophobic people.

I do not identify as a feminist largely because of the attitude displayed by the more vocal MN feminists.

I am in favour of equality.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2015 11:41

The video sounds dire though.

BlueBananas · 03/07/2015 11:47

Still laughing at the person on the first page describing Rihanna as "one of the best vocal talents of her generation" Grin

Pony74 · 03/07/2015 11:48

And she's smoking crack in it. What a twat.

Shakey1500 · 03/07/2015 11:48

I don't identify as an MN feminist either, though that's been well documented here lately Smile

Bloody hell I just watched that video. It's horrifying. She drags that case, studs and all, across a polished parquet floor. Who the fuck does that?

SophieJenkins · 03/07/2015 11:52

Guy took her money, she took the wife, killed the husband, got her money back, lots of nipples. Standard gangster theme. Only with women being the protaganist instead of a man for a change

In what film does a bloke kidnap some woman's husband and hang him upside down naked, before killing the woman he holds the grudge against?

SophieJenkins · 03/07/2015 11:53

Don't bite, Purdie is goading

I said theme, not exact story, otherwise she would be plagarising wouldn't she. I'm not listing all the films in which portray violence against women and gang themes, because there is a LOT.

Also many films use the idea of taking a vulnerable loved one (women and children) to hurt the person they really want to attack. it's not a new idea

"seriously people are saying they haven't watched a music video except online?!"

YepSmile I'm very old, and very boring, and they don't have a screen in the Co-op- which is where I hang out these days.

Ironically, had I not opened this thread I never would have heard of or watched the video..... Wink

All publicity is good publicity tho, eh?

GobblersKnob · 03/07/2015 12:10

Sometimes see music videos on screens in pubs, never ever come across one anywhere else other than in my home by choice.

That said think BBHMM would go down a storm in Waitrose...
