Disgusted at the new Rihanna video!!

I'm not going to link, but I am absolutely disgusted at the new Rihanna video. Extreme sexual violence. Especially coming from Rihanna who has been a victim of domestic violence herself. Who would make a video like this? I just dispair at what is becoming mainstream.

Sorry, rant over, but this just really upsets me.

Not trying to poke fun at you at all. I'm trying to understand your pov. I don't agree that the video celebrates Rihanna any more than the video for 'Wrecking Ball' celebrates Miley Cyrus. I disagree with the message in both videos. However, I respect your opinion and your right to hold it.

Awadebumbo · 03/07/2015 19:48

That wasn't directed at you Loki but at a couple of posters who thought my opinion on how I perceive the actions of a black women being a black women myself laughable.
You may not see it the way I do but sometimes and especially when it comes to feminist issues we are looking at things from completely different directions.

Songs shit and so is the video. Who the fuck wants to see a woman stripped, bound and gagged and hung upside down?

Is the woman in the video white? I ask because another poster referred to her as having blond hair.

Pepperpot99 · 03/07/2015 20:12

"we are coming to take what is ours".

We are still awaiting your explanation of this comment Awadebumbo.

LokiBear · 03/07/2015 20:12

I agree that we are looking from different directions. I grew up in a working class family living in a council house. My community was a very diverse but fiercely integrated one; a mix of black, white, Asian etc. We were all poor and that bound us together. I haven't ever experienced a racial divide; my friends are my friends, the colour of our skin has never been an issue. Therefore, other people's experiences are both bewildering and fascinating to me. That is why I asked you what you meant. I'm the only role model my mixed raced niece has, my sister is useless and we never knew who her dad was. I want to understand. However, I don't want my niece watching a video like that and thinking that drug taking and revenge are cool. She is too precious to me and those things can hurt her.

oabiti · 03/07/2015 20:51

pepperpot, I think when the poster was saying about taking what is ours, she was, perhaps on about what happened to rhianna when she first started out (being exploited by manager) & what was dramatised in the video. I think.

Fake tits are weird.

CrispyFern · 03/07/2015 21:45

Was my first thought after watching that video.

purdiepipesup · 03/07/2015 21:52

Rihanna's violence is centred around naked women for the titillation of men because Rihanna doesn't give a fuck about women. She only cares about giving men erections.

TheXxed · 03/07/2015 21:59

Innocent there are uneven power dynamics between White women and black women. White women benefit from and actively participate in the oppression of black women.

The video makes me feel uncomfortable and upset, but I do think the video is powerful. A black woman ultimately gains revenge on the man who exploited her and the women who enjoyed the fruits of that exploitation.

LokiBear · 03/07/2015 22:08

Please don't make those generalisations TheXxed. I'm a white woman and I have never 'actively participated' in the oppression of black women. 8 be protested against it. I hope I have never inadvertently benefited from that oppression either. I'd protest against that too.

Like someone up thread said, innocent, for the benefit of men.

oabiti · 03/07/2015 22:18

Spot on, innocent

LokiBear · 03/07/2015 22:22

I choose to stand side by side with those who are oppressed and say that it is wrong. I'm not the only white person who feels this way. There is a chance that the video is showing at 'bad people' who steal from other people get their comeuppance. Perhaps it is more autobiographical, than a statement about black women fighting back against white people?

Samcro · 03/07/2015 22:22

WTF
how did this become this???

TheXxed · 03/07/2015 22:23

Loki when I say white I am talking about a political class. In the same way I say 'Men benefit from the subjugation of women'.

Innocent I agree that ultimately the video was for the benefit of men. However I do not see the white woman as an impassive actor. She has been made wealthy from the labour of the black women and therefore just as deserving of her vitriol.

LokiBear · 03/07/2015 22:29

I don't agree with the generalisations in either case. I'm white - I must fall into the bracket of 'white'? Ironically, I want to be defined by more than the colour of my skin.

Ledare · 03/07/2015 22:32

I thought the video was going to be based on the Huggy Bear poem where he wins
