Disgusted at the new Rihanna video!!

I'm not going to link, but I am absolutely disgusted at the new Rihanna video. Extreme sexual violence. Especially coming from Rihanna who has been a victim of domestic violence herself. Who would make a video like this? I just dispair at what is becoming mainstream.

Sorry, rant over, but this just really upsets me.

Posted too soon.

Yanbu. I'm just hoping this sort of thing runs out of steam, eventually. But yeah, I hate it.

Happfeet2911 · 03/07/2015 01:00

Publicity!! Think about it!

someonestolemynick · 03/07/2015 01:19

I believe in equality. I deliberately do not call myself a feminist. Please do not suggest that because I distance myself from the infantalising nonsense that passes for feminism these days makes me a bad person.

Aaand breath...

I reject Feminism (in favour of equality) because the present interpretation of the movement is largely based in hysteria and 21st century witch hunts against anyone who dares to disagree. [Gets off soap box, stops missing the point and gets popcorn]

*You can't really compare this crap to Quentin Tarantino's movies.

There is no story line here, it's just a pissing contest to see who can be the most edgy. *

Yes because a gimp and a prolonged gay rape was really required in a story line. That's just one tiny tiny example of when Quentin took it "too far" but nobody gives a shit because he's an award winning male director.

But a singer does it and everyone loses their shit.

workingdilemma · 03/07/2015 07:19

#Bbhmm - absolutely superb video for an incredible song. I honestly haven't encountered anything that captures the zeitgeist or as culturally significant since the X Factor live final of 2007 (when the very beautiful and talented Leon Jackson took the crown with 'when you believe').

Bitch better have my money!

ApocalypseThen · 03/07/2015 07:32

Rihanna one of the greatest vocal talents of our generation? What an age we live in.

CrystalCove · 03/07/2015 07:34

Doesn't this always happen when the song isn't very good, all people will talk about us the video? And yes the song is crap. But it will get people talking - result for Rhianna.

Samcro · 03/07/2015 07:36

wow that "song" is beyond bad

I don't see the issue, I like the video and the song.

The video is about her accountant who almost bankrupted her when she first started her career. He charged exorbitant fees and mismanaged her funds.

I don't remember people getting up in arms when Taylor Swift did something similar.

Florrieboo · 03/07/2015 07:56

I liked the video, I would love to have tits like the accountants wife :-(

SophieJenkins · 03/07/2015 07:57

what exactly did his wife do, remind me?

LeBearPolar · 03/07/2015 09:05

Watched about half of it and just got really bored, tbh. Rubbish song, shit video.

Mind you, I really don't get the fuss about Rihanna. She seems a classic example of someone trying to make up for lack of talent by taking her clothes off in the hope that people won't notice that she's really not that good.

SophieJenkins · 03/07/2015 09:37

I've watched about half of it now. I turned it off as it was so stupid.

The scenes with the naked woman being tortured were disturbing.

If it was meant to be humorous then that is concerning.

Crocodopolis · 03/07/2015 09:39

She seems a classic example of someone trying to make up for lack of talent by taking her clothes off in the hope that people won't notice that she's really not that good.

It worked for Kim Kardashian! Grin

Pepperpot99 · 03/07/2015 09:42

OP you are not being unreasonable at all - I echo your sentiments. Rihanna is in a position of considerable power and influence and she chooses to glamorise the sexualisation of girls and violence against women. Shame on her and shame on the posters here who are trying to be post ironically clever and sniggering at the OP's objections.

Iggi999 · 03/07/2015 09:50

I think this is different to a Tarantino movie as the viewer expects to identify with Rihanna, you don't expect her to be doing something wicked and if you like her, does that mean you like what she's doing?

SycamoreMum · 03/07/2015 09:56

I thought it was alright -shoulder shrug-. Shes doing something right if shes one of the most successful artists in the world. Meh. Too early to offer anymore than that Grin

SaucyJack · 03/07/2015 09:57

I got a couple of minutes in and then got bored and turned it off. Didn't Rihanna's songs used to have tunes in them?

OP- how old are your kids? Mine are 10, 8 and 1. We don't have Proper Telly and you can't watch the vid on YouTube unless you're registered as being over 18. I don't worry about my kids watching stuff like this as I supervise their viewing choices.

Nice dog tho. I came out of my viewing experience thinking I'd quite like a Pom.

Wishful80sMontage · 03/07/2015 10:01

I've not seen this particular video but in general music videos are increasingly violent and sexual (I know they historically have been but specifically the artists more kid friendly have produced very sexual videos).
You can't really compare this crap to Quentin Tarantino's movies
You really can't music videos are on all day every day easily accessible to children and often on on public places so they are everywhere you can choose not to watch a Tarantino film but you are going to be exposed to music videos constantly.
I love music of all types some videos are fantastic and invention it's a shame that most of them seem to be churned out if the shock/sexy factory though :(

Pantone363 · 03/07/2015 10:04

Released the same week a 13 and 14 year old girl were charged with murder after torturing and battering a woman to death and taking selfies whilst they did it. In the UK.

Delightful.

mrsgpig · 03/07/2015 10:06

Which Taylor Swift video is similar TheXxed?

Wishful80sMontage · 03/07/2015 10:06

I read about that Pantone fucking awful- how did they get to that point? Messed up world

dontrunwithscissors · 03/07/2015 10:06

*Well you probably shouldn't Canyou

Just like I would never assume that everyone votes Tory/Labour/Lib Dem, or that everyone is a Christian/Muslim/Jew for example.*

The two are completely different Hmm. Who you vote for is a personal choice rooted in democratic principles. Very different to castigating an entire group of people as inherently inferior (and perhaps advocating that group of people should be denied basic human rights).
