Disgusted at the new Rihanna video!!

I'm not going to link, but I am absolutely disgusted at the new Rihanna video. Extreme sexual violence. Especially coming from Rihanna who has been a victim of domestic violence herself. Who would make a video like this? I just dispair at what is becoming mainstream.

Sorry, rant over, but this just really upsets me.

Indeed Wagglebee; I think the line "the sexualized violence is graphic and disturbing but overall the video is everything we love about Rihanna" says more than enough. How pathetic.

Foxypaws70 · 03/07/2015 16:30

Yes Innocent Exactly. Violence against women gets people (men) off, so it's all good. I can't see why Taylor Swift's video is relevant to this discussion - no blood, no one is hurt or tortured: badass posturing walking in slo mo in high heels, punching walls and looking fierce, bit of 'mild threat' but it's between equals, not abuser and victim.

TheXxed · 03/07/2015 16:47

croro I didn't do media studies. My degree is in politics from Bristol uni, first person from my family to go to uni and one of 7 black people on my course.

I see what you did there slow clap

Awadebumbo · 03/07/2015 16:54

Or you could take another view if the video bougieblackgirl.com/rihannas-btch-better-have-my-money-video-the-black-womans-anthem-nsfw-or-young-viewers-2/

TheXxed · 03/07/2015 17:04

Awadebumbo don't bother black women only exist on MN as victims or instruments to reinforce set narratives.

Awadebumbo · 03/07/2015 17:15

Yes I had noticed that, it doesn't matter that white people continually appropriate black and act like they invented it and be applauded for being so edgy and different. Or even better when they appropriate it then turn around and criticise the exact same aspect of our culture they have hijacked.

Pepperpot99 · 03/07/2015 17:43

It's interesting that when the going gets tough and the violence against women can't really be defended any more, the axis shifts and it becomes a race issue.

Why did you feel the need to bring your colour into it TheXxed? Noone else has.

TheXxed · 03/07/2015 17:54

Pepperpot I have explained to you on several occasions why you are wrong.

Also race, class and gender are inextricably linked if that's a concept you struggle with I can't help you.

Crocodopolis · 03/07/2015 18:03

Pepperpot, XXed has an undergraduate degree in politics so if she disagrees with you, you are wrong and not even God can help you.

Pepperpot99 · 03/07/2015 18:10

What exactly am I 'wrong' about Xxed? guide me to the point? (I'm afraid I only have a humble Masters so I might not be up to speed with your mighty intellect Wink )

I tend to take the view that videos which glamorise violence against women - no matter who made them - are vile and repellent. I do not make exceptions for people based on their colour, class or gender. If that is a concept you struggle with then even your incredible BA in politics won't save you Grin

MorrisZapp · 03/07/2015 18:20

Well this is bloody depressing isn't it. More sexist shite in a world full of sexist shite.

But fans claim Rihanna is subverting the exploitation genre by torturing the woman herself. Oh well that's ok then.

Dear me.

Awadebumbo · 03/07/2015 18:20

I posted that link because that is what some of the black feminist writers have been writing about. There's been a lot of posts about it being the new black women's anthem, how it means something to them after decades of having our culture appropriated (especially women) and we get no credit, how to some black women it sends the message we coming, we're going take what we are owed and there's nothing anyone can do about. So we don't care what you think our how you want to try and dismiss it. We are coming to take what is ours.

TheXxed · 03/07/2015 18:30

croro you made a comment about me personally which was incorrect so I corrected you.

Also pepperpot I wasnt the only one or the first one to bring up race. You may not understand why race is important to the discussion but it doesn't mean that it isn't. Also I am very proud of my achievements so you attempting to belittle them doesn't work.

Iggi999 · 03/07/2015 18:37

Heaven help us all if a music video has become a call to revolution. Not something to be inspired by at all.
Could the empowerment message you're reading in to it not have been achieved without the torture of a woman (who wasn't even the intended victim)?

Iggi999 · 03/07/2015 18:38

I disagree with Thexxed but think the comments about her degree aren't funny! She only brought it up as told she had a media degree after all.

LokiBear · 03/07/2015 18:38

I don't like the video. I'm uncomfortable with the glamorisation of drug use and violence. I'm white, liberal, proud auntie to a niece who has dual heritage. With that in mind - Awadebumbo could you explain what you mean by 'we are going to take what is owed'? I'm asking to try and better understand your view. Genuinely interested and not trying to be inflammatory.

Crocodopolis · 03/07/2015 18:39

croro you made a comment about me personally which was incorrect so I corrected you

Actually, I didn't, XXed. Seems like your politics degree didn't teach you some basic literacy.

I wrote "I love it when MNers flaunt what they learnt in their GCSE Media Studies courses."

That was in response to your post and not a personal comment. If the post had been personal, it would have been addressed to you and / or included your name. Also? It was facetious.

Crocodopolis · 03/07/2015 18:40

Who said that, Iggi?

Pepperpot99 · 03/07/2015 18:41

"we are coming to take what is ours"

And what is that ?

Crocodopolis · 03/07/2015 18:44

Dunno, Pepperpot, but it can't be a sense of humour.

Pepperpot99 · 03/07/2015 18:48

Indeed Crocodopolis Grin

Iggi999 · 03/07/2015 18:51

Ah, GCSE, not reading properly.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 03/07/2015 19:02

I haven't read the full thread OR watched the video because Rihanna is shit. So...pointless post from me.

purdiepipesup · 03/07/2015 19:18

I love TheXxd's article. It says everything I believe about the 'white, bourgeois supremacy' of Western feminists. And I loved how the article attested to the fight for equality between the sexes being utterly futile unless racial and socio-economic inequalities are stamped out first.

Awadebumbo · 03/07/2015 19:26

Here is another article with a different approach.
The fact that the first thing a couple of posters on here have decided to do is poke fun when I try and explain what something as a black women means to me I think is telling.
