Disgusted at the new Rihanna video!!

I'm not going to link, but I am absolutely disgusted at the new Rihanna video. Extreme sexual violence. Especially coming from Rihanna who has been a victim of domestic violence herself. Who would make a video like this? I just dispair at what is becoming mainstream.

Sorry, rant over, but this just really upsets me.

Why was I deleted? Which rule did I break?

SarfEasticatedMumma · 04/07/2015 20:28

Maybe they felt you weren't of sound mind and judgement!

SarfEasticatedMumma · 04/07/2015 20:31

posdibly this? "We're all for freedom of speech. That said, we'll remove posts we consider to contain personal attacks, to break the law and/or to be obscene, racist, .sexist, disablist, ageist or homophobic, once they are brought to our attention, we will also delete any posts that we think are just seriously unpleasant (Please note that any subsequent posts repeating the words in the deleted post may be deleted, too.)'

I thought it was pretty clear that I was being ironic - hmmm. Maybe irony isn't the done thing round here these days. Whatevs.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 04/07/2015 21:20

I don't give a shit about the video, or the song, but maan, that bird has nice tits.

TurnItIn · 04/07/2015 21:21

Good point! I'm surprised he's letting me use the computer actually, especially as it's almost blowjob and horlicks time.

TurnItIn · 04/07/2015 21:22

Oh and the username is just a phrase I often find myself saying on MN so I thought I would save my typing fingers.

DrLego · 04/07/2015 21:31

I just think it's grotesque but primarily for trivialising violence full stop, and graphic homicide. I don't think money or empowerment or equality is ever a good enough reason to do this.. it's not a strong message for women or for black women or anything that clever at all. It's a really disgusting low brow self centred vacuous nonsense and I find it troubling that some people idolise this sht.

MTWTFSS · 04/07/2015 21:34

Rhianna's worst ever song!!! :( I used to love her!

butterfly133 · 04/07/2015 21:36

I cannot see a similarity between this and "Bad Blood" at all.

MidniteScribbler · 05/07/2015 02:39

I may sound old, but what is wrong with some singing and dancing? A catchy song which doesn't talk about the size of a woman's arse, and some clever dance moves is all I need in a music clip.

::Goes to sit in the old fuddy duddy corner::

LassUnparalleled · 05/07/2015 03:43

I find it rather offensive that you equate people who do not identify as a feminist with racist or homophobic people.

I agree. The "If you are not a feminist you must be a really bad person" line is irritating.

I don't call myself a feminist. I thought the video was awful. There's nothing original in it and the "subverting tropes" argument holds no water.

Canyouforgiveher · 05/07/2015 06:03

Lass, if you state that you are not a feminist then you clearly do not believe in equality and equal opportunities for women so why are you so different than people who don't believe in equal opportunities for other races or other religions?

If you are happy for women to be equal but think feminists are some sort of political party or religious faction, then you are just wrong and need to think again about your incorrect definition of feminism.

If you are a woman who "is not a feminist" you do realise that the reason you have a vote and something closer to equal pay and the right to rear your own children in the event of a divorce and the right to hold property in your own name is because of women who were ... feminists.

One of the saddest things for me is seeing women saying "I am not a feminist". What is wrong with being a feminist? Why are you letting one radical definition of feminism define what should be a unifying feature of what women want - equality and a voice?

When I was growing up it was the default position for thinking aware or downtrodden women of every class.

I don't call myself a feminist either. I dont call myself by any labels but by god I am a feminist and I applaud everything women have done over many centuries to get us close to equality. And if I felt joining a "feminist' party might help women in countries where they have no rights to this day then I would join it in the morning.

Honestly I find it offensive when women, living free lives in a democracy in which they can participate say "I am not a feminist". short memories for sure.

SarfEasticatedMumma · 05/07/2015 09:14

I guess 'feminist' is a label that some people don't identify with, and it's the message that's the most important thing. I think it's a shame personally, as the struggle for women's equality has been so hard, that uniting behind a word does give us all strength.

LassUnparalleled · 05/07/2015 14:20

I believe men and women should be equal and have equal opportunities. I am pro-choice. I think the sex industry is evil and degrades and dehumanises women and men for that matter. The Green Party position on legalising prostitution is ridiculous.

I don't call myself a feminist as I am not prepared to take on the baggage that comes with it. For example a comment on a thread about not all men being rapists but all women are victims of misogyny.

I cannot be bothered being constantly on the look out for something to be offended by. For example the thread where a poster took offence at the word "ladies". Personally "guys",which has been given a seal of approval on other threads, irritates me.

I cannot be bothered agonising that my preference for things which are pretty and feminine is because I've been brainwashed by patriarchal conditioning and I'm too stupid to know it. You know what, even if that is the case I don't care.

I cannot be bothered running a feminist analysis on whether I'm a victim of oppressive patriarchy before I shave my legs as apparently I don't have sufficient agency just to think my legs in a dress look more pleasing to me without coarse black hairs.

I suppose I see feminism (or the MN version - other versions may be available
e. g Polly Vernon , although she was trashed on FWR) as very negative. It collectively views life as a woman as universally crap. It does not encourage individual thought and/or denies the capacity of women to make individual free choices because it's all dictated by the patriarchy.

So despite what I've said in the first paragraph and finding this video utterly lacking in merit I do not want the label "feminist" imposed on me.

chaiselounger · 05/07/2015 14:57

Why are you disgusted? That's what Rihanna is all about, isn't it? Shocking people? Doesn't make it any less awful. But I kind of expect it from her. I don't think she really worries about the feminist message she's giving to young girls, do you???!!!

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 05/07/2015 15:25

Just watched the video and yes, terrible song attempting to cover how awful it is with a slick, publicity-seeking video. So, no different to many other musicians, then.
I did wonder if it was attempting to turn the tables and place Rihanna in the 'gangster' role, but I don't get why they did that to the wife instead of just taking him? The very end, I think, is a deliberate reference to Mads Mikkelson's Hannibal, as Rihanna wears the sort of plastic outfit he wears when killing people in the show, again reversing the gender roles. Although sadly Mads has never worn a see through plastic mini skirt whilst killing someone fails serious analysis at the last hurdle by sexualising a person and missing the point of the discussion

Cheeseandhamtoast · 05/07/2015 15:28

I guess, thinking about it, I am not disgusted at Rihanna as she is just one individual. But I'm angry at the system which allows this video to be made, watched freely on the Internet, with no problems at all and no backlash by the media. There is a lot of money and powerful people who have backed this video, and it is quite scary that our children are growing up in a society where this is quite normal and mainstream.

This video comes out a less than a month before the 'Home' DVD.

I have new respect for Miley Cyrus - at least her questionable videos are an attempt to move away from her tween role model persona.
