Ok, I'll bite. Not terrifying, but I find the image slightly disturbing. Then again I find the burka pretty disturbing anyway.

Because we are programmed from birth to read facial expressions - that's why a just born baby will automatically look at the face of the person holding it. And will continue to look at faces for the rest of his/her life.

It goes completely against the human psyche to NOT read facial expressions (which is why the men who impose restrictions on women insist the full facial veil is used - it immediately segregates and dehumanises the person wearing it).

The burka imo is wrong and i think government should ban it for under 15s and in public places like schools, council and government buildings and airports and train stations. If you can't wear a hood in a shopping centre you should not be allowed a burka.

But if you want a debate about burka's then have one. The article is basically saying look at what was once a white Christian area and look at it now which is racist.

Yes, it's certainly not terrifying but it beats me why anyone would work with the public whilst hiding themselves from the public.

I'd feel the same if she was wearing a full face crash helmet while serving ice creams.

No, there's nothing scary about people in burkas. They're just normal people under there. Going about their business.
Hysteria over stuff like that glosses over the main point. What people need to be asking themselves is WHY people are going over and joining terrorists.

Why are they going over to terrorists? I personally don't think it helps if you have huge communities of people who won't integrate with others, and stick to themselves. Won't engage with anyone outside of their religion and beliefs. Which DOES happen.
That's a recipe for fearfulness (is that even a word?! and suspicion for a start. Not just from non Muslims, but from Muslims towards non Muslims.
Integration, not segregation is what's needed. Then everyone can learn more about other cultures and see we're all the same really. Not go haring off to a foreign country to fight against your neighbours as they don't fit in with your beliefs.

But the mail article and the way its worded does not lead to any debate instead makes non muslims fear of muslims and muslims feel marginalised and made to feel as thought they are a problem.

Agree with pp that the idea of women being forced/ encouraged to wear a burka is worrying. Also that children (under 16) shouldn't be allowed to wear them.

But it has nothing to do with ice cream sales and I imagine that this is the daily heil (or daily hatemail - any more nicknames?) being racist again.

Worra But with 2.6 million readers a day (in print) and the 116 most visited website in the world its not going to hit them in its pocket. If anything the mail has been smart going free online and thus everyone at work reads it. Also the fact that many read the celebs bit but it then links them back into news and politics.

Oh and the 14 most visited U.K website.
