To think dirty nappies should be dealt with in the bathroom?

One of my close friends has a lovely baby daughter, around 10 months old, and I'm heavily pregnant with my first. The last two occasions they've visited me at home, the baby has needed a pooey nappy changing. Am I being unreasonable to expect her to do this upstairs in the bathroom rather than on my living room floor, with just a muslin between her dirty arse and my nice rug?! Not only does it stink but the baby is an enthusiastic crawler and flails around trying to escape, pooey bum in the air, while my friend gropes around for wipes etc. I haven't said anything (I now feel like it's too late) but have moved across the room to be further from the stench which has prompted my friend to say "you'll have to get used to this!" to which I've responded "I'm sure it's different when it's your own" even though that's not really the point since I don't plan to change stinky nappies in the living room, especially not when the baby is at an age when they're eating solids! I'm not even particularly houseproud so can't work out if I just don't get it because I'm not a parent yet?

In my opinion Yabu but I know lots of people will disagree! I just change wherever we are and open a window. If I'm at a friends house, though, I always pretend I use a bathroom normally and would take my child there, unless it was only a wee-y nappy and I knew it would be super quick and I knew my friend very well.

nope, two kids and 6 years on and I still don't think it's appropriate to change smelly nappies in the living room, especially not someone else's living room. YANBU!

I've changed a dirty nappy in just about any place you care to mention. You just have to sometimes.

Are you planning or do you already have a changing station upstairs in the baby's room? That's what we did.

And then, after I'd had my first I came to my senses and shoved a changing mat and gear behind the sofa in the living room.

I've never had any of my friends go to the bathroom in my house to change nappies. it's always just done in what ever room were in. Even if they offered to go I'd tell them not to

Get a changing mat for your visitors to use, though really they should bring their own.

Bathrooms tend to be quite small, cramped places. Maybe you have a huge house with a huge bathroom, in which case certainly do direct them there. For many of us though, it is hard to do nappy changes in a small cramped space, where you risk banging your or child's head on the toilet bowl or a wash basin.

At home I've always done nappy changes in my child's or my bedroom. When visiting someone, I used the bathroom. I've also changed a lot of nappies on the back seat of the car.

I've never changed either of mine in our or anyone else's bathroom and ive never met anyone else who does.

A few of my friends having changing units in their baby's room but that's about it.

I do ask friends/family though as I get that some may be precious about it but everyone has said its fine and go ahead wherever we are.

We use cloth too so if we have a dirty one its a trek to the bathroom anyway.

I would ALWAYS take my dc to the bathroom - be that in our house or someone else's.
I would not let a child crawl around with no nappy on and a dirty bum either - you get everything to hand before you take the nappy off.

Pretty astounded by these answers, tbh.

I've never seen anyone go into a bathroom in someone else's/their own house to change a nappy. And I'm surrounded by breeders.

When I was BFeeding DD she pooed after every feed. She fed pretty much continuously. Good luck with that

We have a changing table set up in our soon to be baby's room, the first time I did say she could use that but she didn't get the hint. Other friends have done it in the bathroom before. But another friend changed her toddler's on our living room floor when we were having a party which grossed me out (and the majority of childless guests!). I wouldn't mind just wet nappies, it's the poo element...

yanbu. even if trekking to your own bathroom every time you need to change a shitty nappy is (understandably) too much effort, you're in someone else's house- just walk up the stairs ffs

I had a fold up changing mat that was a free gift from Huggies and used that wherever I was. There's not enough room in my bathroom for anyone to change a baby. I did use the changing station sometimes if I was home.

I'm sure once you have your own you will look at it differently. Most people say "I'd never do that" about various things, until they have their own baby

I swore I'd never hold my baby up and sniff it's bum to see if it needed changing.....

and apart from the fact that wafting your child's shit scent around someone's living room is boke, I would be PISSED if a friend changed a dirty nappy with only a muslin between the shit and the carpet

Why don't you just tell her to use the bathroom if it bothers you? She probably doesn't realise you have a problem with it.

I changed my baby in the living room, mainly because to begin with I could hardly walk and certainly not carry my DS after a pretty horrific c section. Then when he learnt to roll at a freakishly young age, I changed him on the floor as it was safer. Then I just got used to doing that and didn't even think about it. Although, at other people's houses I would ask where they didn't mind me changing, as it's clear some people mind!

I don't think I've ever changed a nappy in a bathroom in my life. Never seen anyone else do it either ( or maybe they're doing it secretly and I haven't noticed)

I wouldn't expect someone to use the bathroom, but I would expect them to have a proper changing mat rather than just a muslin. I always changed mine upstairs in ours/his room, but don't mind others doing it wherever they want as long as it's adequately protected. We've always had hard floors though, so everything's relatively wipe clean which may have a bearing on my approach.
