To think more outrage is needed over Tory threat to child benefit?

According to papers today Tory planned welfare cuts can't be achieved without further cuts to child benefit. George Osborne has refused to rule it out apparently. Such a cut would be massively controversial, hurt lower income families and is potentially politically toxic for the Tories. So why is no-one pushing them for a straight answer?

no they said three children recently

not that its fair on the children but hey if you have quads you can just go back to work sooner cant you? on your zero hour contract

flower68 · 08/04/2015 20:03

I read something about it being bundled in with the rules for universal credit which seem really complicated but if I understand it it means a family with one child and an income of £27k stand to lose CB - the income threshold rises with every child up to £39k for families with 3 kids. It's a massive deal and they need to be made to answer for it before they're elected back in and it just happens anyway.

Depends upon what the cuts to child benefit are.

If they are child benefit is capped at a max of 2 children (but not retrospective) then I think fair enough. I'd vote for that in a flash.

If they say child benefit for 1 child if your income is less than £27k, then child benefit for 2 children if your income is less than £35k etc. Up to a max of 2 children - also fair enough.

Why should we pay for unlimited children?

I would go a step further and say a max of 2 children child benefit and a max of a 3 bed housing benefit and that is only if you have 2 different sex children. If you have 2 children of the same sex then the housing benefit should be for a max of 2 bedrooms.

I know soooooooo many couples of 25-35 who can't afford to have more than 1 child because they either can't afford a bigger home or the child care or both.

Why should the state pay for unlimited bedrooms and unlimited children?

RabbitSaysWoof · 08/04/2015 20:16

I've always wondered that too about children sharing a room. IMO its not poverty to have a boys room, a girls room and a parents room I see no need for more if you're not footing the bill.

Marmaladedandelions · 08/04/2015 20:16

I think it should be restricted to number of births rather than number of children; otherwise I don't have a huge issue with this, I must admit.

edwinbear · 08/04/2015 20:19

I feel quite bitter about no longer qualifying for it so have no issue at all with it being capped for others.

straighttothepoint · 08/04/2015 20:22

It should be capped to maximum 2 kids, plus linked to benefits so only the needy get it. It pisses me off that being married with single earner over threshold means no CB but unmarried families can earn double us and still be able to claim it.

meglet · 08/04/2015 20:22

yanbu.

The more cuts we tolerate the more they will continue snipping.

Blackmamma · 08/04/2015 20:25

You have not earned that money and it's being giving on the backs of hard working people many low paid you should not base your family on what you earn the free money given by the govermnet

And I suggest anyone who is planning a child and cannot afford to do without the £17 a week means in my view you can't afford to have a child

This is why I am voting Tory we are a country addicted to benfits and need to be detoxed labour is like a dealer and only wants to feed our habit when it dose nothing for us.

Sort of agree with blackmamma but I won't be voting Tory - they've done enough damage for now.

bookbag40 · 08/04/2015 20:29

I totally agree with it being capped at 2 children. If you can't afford to support more children without child benefit then don't have them. People need to take far more personal responsibility for the number of children they have. The state is not here to enable people who can't afford it to have big families just because they want to. Assume there would be disclaimers for multiple births.

littlebillie · 08/04/2015 20:30

child benefit should never be relied on, only have the children you can afford.

sailoratsea · 08/04/2015 20:30

Yes, you are all right pps. Bring on child poverty. Not enough kids live in poverty these days. If your parents can't afford to feed you then why should you get something to eat?

BlueCanaryOverByTheLightSwitch · 08/04/2015 20:31

Hmm see this thread has brought out the best in humankind

Blackmamma · 08/04/2015 20:32

Every time I see it it just astounds me people outraged by money they can't have, haven't earned or worked.

The entitled generation I belive it's this attatuide that makes the poles happy to work on Costa while our young sit at home play gta and say what should I make coffie I a, entilited to......

I think it should be capped to one child for couples and 2 children for single women the people and only because we have been addicted for so long the detox will be long

The people who support any child are the two people named on the birth cErt

MrsFlannel · 08/04/2015 20:33

book what about people who've already HAD them and then lost their jobs? Or suffered ill health??

Jackieharris · 08/04/2015 20:34

Tbh I'd rather they got rid of child benefit and child tax credits altogether and had universal free/affordable childcare for all families who want it instead.

But yes under the current system any cut to cb is cruel and will harm children.

Bowlersarm · 08/04/2015 20:35

Sorry, I know it's not popular, but I believe in a two children cap too.

Blackmamma · 08/04/2015 20:36

People frigging bang on about child poverty if people didn't have to pay their tax towards everyone having £17 a week for free including kate and wills they might be able to keep their tax and put towards their own children this money comes out of low paid workes pay

Emmaswan · 08/04/2015 20:37

You see - I don't get this.

On the one hand we have the bleeidng hearts telling us that no one, NO ONE has kids just to get CB as it's soooo low.

And on the other they wring their hands and cry, " But the children will STARVE without it - bastard , evil Tories!"

You can't have it both ways.

Personally, I'd get rid of it completely and extend free school meals to ALL kids and free hot breakfasts to ones on benefits.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 08/04/2015 20:38

Capped at 2 children but not retrospective seems fair.

MrsFlannel · 08/04/2015 20:38

Jackie you might rather that but then thousands would be buggered. Those on low wages need the tax credits to eat ffs!

They need to focus on OTHER areas. The benefits bill is TINY compared to the cost of tax evasion.
