To think more outrage is needed over Tory threat to child benefit?

According to papers today Tory planned welfare cuts can't be achieved without further cuts to child benefit. George Osborne has refused to rule it out apparently. Such a cut would be massively controversial, hurt lower income families and is potentially politically toxic for the Tories. So why is no-one pushing them for a straight answer?

Those with no more than two children, or whose children are over 18, are not going to be affected. Older people with grown up children and potential UKIP voters are more likely to support this policy.

Surprised the Tories didn't do this under Thatcher or Major.

rollonthesummer · 12/04/2015 11:52

Forallthesaints: they haven't actually said it'll be limited to 2 children, have they? Other posters earlier in the week were suggesting child benefit will go completely for everyone who doesn't qualify for universal credit.

I wish they'd just spell out what they are intending to do.

LisaMed · 12/04/2015 12:00

Re having kids that you can't afford.

Google 'reproductive coercion'. It won't affect vast swathes of people but there will be an effect. A former neighbour had fourteen children before she left rural Ireland and the husband who stabbed her. Her choices about reproduction were very limited.

btw I didn't claim CB for years because my husband said that it wasn't fair that women have everything and though I'm a SAHM and he works, the CB was in his name. My pension entitlement is fucked. My chance of getting further training is fucked and my ability to get a job is severely limited atm. I am going to have a grim old age.

Littlemonstersrule · 12/04/2015 12:14

Why stay with someone like that then LisaMed? If it were my daughter that wasn't allowed the CB, wanted to work or study but couldn't and had no pension for old age I'd be packing her bags for her.

LisaMed · 12/04/2015 12:18

Littlemonstersrule Fuck off

Littlemonstersrule · 12/04/2015 12:23

Why? For daring to suggest you could change things if you wanted? You are an adult and can make your own choices but if you won't change things then there is no one to blame but yourself.

Greengardenpixie · 12/04/2015 12:24

Oh dear Shock Has it really come down to this on this thread Shock Shock
Time to depart it.....

Hillingdon · 12/04/2015 13:19

Lisa, its a reasonable question. Show your teeth for your tormentor as opposed to someone on the web. You are portraying yourself as a victim

Marmaladedandelions · 12/04/2015 13:39

Woah - harsh, she can hardly change things retrospectively, can she? Shock

LisaMed · 12/04/2015 13:43

Victim, who knows?

Not all the fault of my husband. Very little, in fact. I am not going to lay out my situation for littlemonsters to shit over. And people talk about choice when sometimes there is none.

CB isn't always going to the mother. Limiting to CB to smaller families won't always limit family size. And even if I LTB those facts won't change.

It comes to something when I am going to be pilloried for not LTB when I actually just pointed out that some things are not that simplistic. And telling me to LTB on this thread is patronising and inappropriate.

I'm going to go away and Name Change because now if I post about stuff like cleaning windows or problems with school I am going to be told I need to LTB. And I am angry that I am being attacked on this thread.

Fauxlivia · 12/04/2015 14:02

It's not always easy to ltb when in an abusive relationship. Not commenting on Lisa's marriage but generally women in these situations are so ground down by something which starts of as small oppressions and increases over time that it's hard to see the wood for the trees.

No woman should he criticised because it took a while to ltb.

Agreed , time to depart, political debate has ended here.
