To think more outrage is needed over Tory threat to child benefit?

According to papers today Tory planned welfare cuts can't be achieved without further cuts to child benefit. George Osborne has refused to rule it out apparently. Such a cut would be massively controversial, hurt lower income families and is potentially politically toxic for the Tories. So why is no-one pushing them for a straight answer?

I also agree with it being capped at 2 children (excluding multiple births and excluding children already born). It is a sensible plan by a cash strapped state.

Marmaladedandelions · 08/04/2015 20:40

Isn't childcare the main issue with why tax credits are needed? Even if I was to get a full time position I would only break even with childcare costs at best. And comparatively I'm reasonably well paid.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 08/04/2015 20:41

a max of a 3 bed housing benefit and that is only if you have 2 different sex children. If you have 2 children of the same sex then the housing benefit should be for a max of 2 bedrooms

Apart from a total limit HB already is limited to a 2 bed if you have 2 same sex children. And if the kids are differnt sexes they are expected to share until age 10

vitamink · 08/04/2015 20:41

You do realise that whoever gets in will be making huge cuts to the welfare budget? It is totally unsustainable (and yes, most of it goes on pensions) but it is basically a ponzi scheme, problem is that too many people are taking out much more than they put in.

BlueCanaryOverByTheLightSwitch · 08/04/2015 20:42

I'm alright jacks

straighttothepoint · 08/04/2015 20:42

Blue Canary - are you going to say something or just make snipey comments?

Bowlersarm · 08/04/2015 20:42

So you keep saying bluecanary

Emmaswan · 08/04/2015 20:43

arrhhh so lovely to hear the opinions of people who live in there own little bubble, with blinkers on.

Would that be the bubble where people only have the number of children they can actually afford to feed and clothe, then? Rather than relying on other people working their arses off to pay for them?

Few things in life more selfish, immoral and downright nasty than popping out kids you know you can't feed and expecting some other poor fucker to provide for them.

DrLego · 08/04/2015 20:43

It's already capped
This may plunge more into poverty. £20 a week or so on a set day if weekly means you know on that day you can buy food for your child. 27k gross for a couple paying private rent and childcare - not appropriate to cut child benefit there.

Blackmamma · 08/04/2015 20:43

Not this again

If I steal £50 and you steal 1k both is stil stealing both need to be sorted we should not just leave the benfits fraudsters to it because some posh wanker is tax avoiding

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 08/04/2015 20:43

What I think is more scandalous are the in-work benefits. Why are not employers being forced to pay a living wage rather than the government subsidising employers by doling these benefits out.

Oh and I think the Freebies handed to pensioners should be means-tested to - if we are all in this together, why should just CB be means tested. Oh I forgot, Pensioners are good voters.

You should ask labour as they are the ones who introduced CT instead of forcing employers to pay more

Errmm we are talking about cb not benefit fraud

I agree. And we have Blair and Brown to thank for that particular fiscal fuck up ( among many).

NeedsAsockamnesty · 08/04/2015 20:47

In work benefits existed before labour got in they were just called a different thing

Blackmamma · 08/04/2015 20:47

Emmaswan

Amen

Emmaswan · 08/04/2015 20:49

And were a small top up, not the many thousands a year they are now nor were they fiddleable so you can get away with a part time job for full time money.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2015 20:49

'I totally agree with it being capped at 2 children.'

So will it apply to men who father multiple children? Whoever they get the child on won't be able to claim it if he has fathered 2 kids already? Because otherwise, it's misogynistic bullshit.

maudpringles · 08/04/2015 20:53

Emmaswan - nail on the head

HelenaDove · 08/04/2015 20:53

Agree expat. TOTALLY!

BlueCanaryOverByTheLightSwitch · 08/04/2015 20:54

The sort of person popping out kids that they cannot afford. Are miniscule, your hard earned taxes go on a lot more then them. Honestly I think it's time the record was changed.

And yes I agree labour should had made sure the employers paid proper wages.
But blame labour or torys. No need to starve children for it.

as for snide comments, I find yours just as offensive. You talk about people you have no way of knowing what their real lives are like, like pieces of shit on your shoe

Emmaswan · 08/04/2015 20:54

CB is paid to the mother. Always has been. That's why so many men can get away with breeding like rutting boars.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2015 20:55

'CB is paid to the mother. Always has been. That's why so many men can get away with breeding like rutting boars.'

No, it's not. My husband claimed it on our two daughters as he was a SAHD.

verybluebananas · 08/04/2015 20:55

I have two children, because that's how many we could afford. We claimed no other benefits, had a household income of £30k, and I spent the child benefit on toys and trips out that we wouldn't otherwise afford.

Now I have lost my husband and my job because of domestic violence. I claim income support and tax credits plus dusability living allowance and carers allowance for my eldest son. I can't work again for another year or so. If the tories get in, and cut my benefits, I am completely stuffed. I didn't make this situation, and cutting my benefits won't get me into work any sooner, it will just cause my children real hardship. We are already pretty skint!

I hate reading threads like these and feeling judged for claiming benefits.

HelenaDove · 08/04/2015 20:56

Thing is Emmaswan back when it was called Family Credit it was what it said on the tin. For FAMILIES with KIDS.

And if you didnt have DC the attitude was "Fuck you You dont matter You can work for 50p an hour.

At least post 1997 people without kids could get crap wages topped up!
