To think that a 12year old doing this is wrong?

disneymum3 · 02/01/2015 22:00

Today I found out that my 12 year old niece is sexually active with her boyfriend. I know that her mum (my sister in law) knows what she is doing, and hasn't said anything to her / isn't bothered.
I feel that this is wrong and she shouldn't be doing this sort of thing at the age of 12. The thing is I don't know what to do.
Any advice on this will be greatly received TIA.

The age of the boy is irrelevant. The girl is under 13 so it is statutory rape

ghostyslovesheep · 02/01/2015 22:25

section 6 is mainly concerned with over 13's - section 2:1 is the key here

and yes how do you know OP that this is happening?

RoastingYourChestnutsHurtsAlot · 02/01/2015 22:25

Also I wouldn't advocate the op playing detective, report it anonymously and leave it to the professionals

RoastingYourChestnutsHurtsAlot · 02/01/2015 22:25

Thought it was 6.2. Sorry. Either way an informative document

SocialMediaAddict · 02/01/2015 22:27

Bloody hell! Absolutely shocking. How do you know? Does your brother know?

LaurieFairyCake · 02/01/2015 22:29

She's not having sex, she is suffering child abuse and rape by her mother

Contact SS or her school and inform them

LaurieFairyCake · 02/01/2015 22:30

You don't need to know anything about the boy, her mother is the adult not preventing it so its neglect/abuse

Meloria · 02/01/2015 22:31

Suggesting her mother is taping her is a bit much!

lemisscared · 02/01/2015 22:32

i losr my virginity at 12. i didn't realise until much later that it destroyed me. please don't stand by and allow this especially if the boy is older.

Bloody hell..

Seriously?

Cabbagesaregreen · 02/01/2015 22:33

You don't need to post this on the internet. What you need to do is report it to the police. It's hardly a matter for aibu.

RoastingYourChestnutsHurtsAlot · 02/01/2015 22:35

It does bug me when something like this that so clearly needs social services involved is thrown on here in such a blasé manner and then left hanging.

Or am I alone in thinking this is a no brainer?

QueenInTheNorth · 02/01/2015 22:35

This is a child protection issue, legally she cannot consent! While the age of consent is 16, more laws exist to protect those under the age of 13. Here's a fact sheet on it! www.fpa.org.uk/sites/default/files/law-on-sex-factsheet-january-2011.pdf

You should contact social services.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2015 22:36

Well you've kicked up a bit of a storm here haven't you OP?

Are you actually going to make another post or are you just really slow at typing?

WineWineWine · 02/01/2015 22:39

The age of the boy is only relevant in as much as whether he is also a a child and needing SS intervention or this is entirely a police issue.
Either way, you need to call SS.

Hatespiders · 02/01/2015 22:40

The first thing is to verify that this is in fact happening. How did you come to know about it op? And can you be sure it's true, that actual sexual intercourse is taking place? If you are sure, then you have no option but to report it to social services, maybe anonymously. This is a child being abused, as everyone else is saying. The other recourse is to the Police, because it is indeed a crime for a child of this age to be having sex.
If you do nothing, think how you will be letting the girl down. The situation needs immediate intervention by the authorities. The fact her own mother is colluding is horrifying; this could go on indefinitely if you don't do the right thing and get it stopped.
I realise you must be feeling terribly anxious about the repercussions, but there are some cases where your duty is clear, and this is one of them.

ghostyslovesheep · 02/01/2015 22:40

my thoughts exactly Worra x

good to know though that most sane people are aware this is illegal and a child protection issue mind.

Cabbagesaregreen · 02/01/2015 22:41

Who the fuck posts about a child being raped on aibu as they're not sure what to do ? I hope you're a troll and haven't got. 3 kids.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2015 22:44

Yep and those talking about rape even thought the OP has conveniently forgotten to mention the boy's age...

RoastingYourChestnutsHurtsAlot · 02/01/2015 22:45

It is rape regardless of the boys age due to the girl being under 13.

Either way. I've deferred judgment to HQ
