To be annoyed that MIL is only giving us £300,000?

WeddedBliss · 11/06/2014 20:10

OK, so hypothetically.

We were having that 'What would you do if you won £80 million on the lottery?' conversation.

MIL said she'd love to be able to set her family up for life. That dh and DBIL would obviously be first on the list, and she'd give them £300k each.

£300k? Really? You're only giving your two sons £300k each out of friggin £80 million? I'd be giving my best friend more than that if it were me, never mind my dc.

AIBU to think she's being really stingy?

IamBob · 11/06/2014 20:11

I think it depends where the rest of the money is going...

Tryharder · 11/06/2014 20:12

YANBU. I'd expect at least £10million. Grin

Bearbehind · 11/06/2014 20:12

Disgraceful- you should never ever speak to her again on principle Grin

PS- the Euromillions is more than £100m on Friday so she might up her offer by a grand.

CharlesRyder · 11/06/2014 20:12
Grin

Is it a bit like Bill Gates who says he's only giving his kids the odd million here and there coz he doesn't want to spoil 'em?

Allalonenow · 11/06/2014 20:15

Well you'll know how much to give her when you win Grin

MamaPain · 11/06/2014 20:15

My own fucking child, who I have genuinely sweated to feed and clothe and shelter for years, told me today if he won, he's give me 'a couple of grand' Shock

calculatorsatdawn · 11/06/2014 20:16

DP and I had a similar conversation over the £1m necklace

darling, if you had £1m would you buy me that necklace?

no, then I'd have a necklace and no money

ok, if you had £10m?

no, I'd have spent a 10th of the money on a necklace

It carried on like this until we established that no amount of money would get me a £1m necklace. consequently he's getting FA if I win the lottery.

WeddedBliss · 11/06/2014 20:17

Well you'll know how much to give her when you win

Tight old bugger will be lucky if she gets a fiver now!

OP posts:
PervyMuskrat · 11/06/2014 20:18

Tight cow! Even at 1% interest rate, she'd get £800k pa in interest alone so wouldn't even have to touch the capital to give them £300k each.

She is at least buying you a suitable mansion and holiday home abroad though isn't she? Wink

Mrsjayy · 11/06/2014 20:18

I am loving your huff Grin tight fisted auld boot her money wont make her happy you knoww

Roseformeplease · 11/06/2014 20:19

My father told us he would pay our mortgages with a win, but no more. I pointed out to him that there were 4 children and so a far greater chance of one of us winning, than him winning. He upped his offer to 10% each (so 40% of the total shared).

Try that!

Mrsjayy · 11/06/2014 20:20

Dh told dds he was going to share his eurowin o Tuesday with the dds he won £5.90

BernardlookImaprostituterobotf · 11/06/2014 20:20

No, you need to open another can of worms before you never speak to her again.

'Mil, only because they will each get 40 mil in your will, right?'

You need to know.
If she starts looking fondly at Dogs Trust adverts, you know what you'll need to do

AtiaoftheJulii · 11/06/2014 20:22

300K is hardly going to set anyone for life! YANBU Grin

WeddedBliss · 11/06/2014 20:22

No Pervy - just £300k total.

Don't get me started on the inequality between DH and DBIL.

DBIL is single, living a bachelor lifestyle - so he gets £300k all to himself.

£300k for us is for DH, me and our two dc. Nowt extra for the grandkids, no trust fund, no private schooling paid for, no pony each for weekend rides.

OP posts:
AtiaoftheJulii · 11/06/2014 20:22

*UP for life!

cozietoesie · 11/06/2014 20:23

It's the 300 that gets me. If you were thinking about sploshing cash in a hypothetical way, you'd surely be thinking 'quarter of a million', 'half a million', 'a million' and so on. 300 sounds as if there's some formula behind it - and I'd be dying to know what that was.

Chippednailvarnish · 11/06/2014 20:24

Lowers voice to a whisper...

If I won I wouldn't tell anyone other than DH and I certainly won't be giving people money.

AlpacaPicnic · 11/06/2014 20:27

Ooh, thanks for the reminder! Have bought tickets and can spend the next few days playing 'what if...'
And fwiw, if I won that much, nobody would be getting thousands, everyone I care about would get at least 1mil...
300,000 is such a random amount!

Cookiechef · 11/06/2014 20:30

My father said he would buy me my sis and 2 step sisters a big house each and new cars and would buy us a business each so we didn't forget how the real world works but would help us out if we needed it, my mum said she would split have the winnings then me and my sis would get a quarter each it's safe to say who we want to win (only kidden). I would be happy with a house I can work for the rest :).

iklboo · 11/06/2014 20:31

This is a minefield for us. MIL & FIL are divorced. My folks still married. DH said we'd give his mum a million, his dad a million and my folks a million BETWEEN them. I pointed out this meant his folks would be getting more than mine - and individually his folks were better off than mine are together. He still reckons his idea is fair.

Chattymummyhere · 11/06/2014 20:32

We wouldn't tell anyone the amount. We would splash some cash but just be like oh it was enough to buy us a house and give you (siblings, parents, inlaws) 10k per couple.

Kids would have trust funds, private schooling ect

But if a sibling etc ever came needing help we would help then out buy over the too but needed presents (cars and boilers stuff like that) and massive family holidays around the world

ExitPursuedByABear · 11/06/2014 20:32

Bitch.

picnicbasketcase · 11/06/2014 20:32

YANBU. 300k if she won a couple of million - very nice. Out of 80 million, it's fucking insulting pocket change.

Good job this is all hypothetical really.

PrincessOfChina · 11/06/2014 20:33

£300k for her son and family?! I'd give all my mates a million each I reckon. No point having a fuck ton of money if none of your mates can afford to do stuff with you.
