AIBU to hang my boots up and then retire from AIBU/MN?

Right, been here for two years, learned a few things, had a few laughs, been impressed with the kindness and thoughtfulness of people and was helped through one particularly difficult episode.

But I've had enough. I'm closing my account down this week.

I'm not sure if things have got worse of late, or the scales have fallen from my eyes, but AIBU seems stuffed to the rafters with threads that don't sit right with me. Either they're goady (the 'classic' benefit basher thread endlessly recycled) trolling attempts or threads you know can't be true as they contain information that contradict what the poster wrote a couple a days ago.

I'm at the stage now, where I am so jaded that I treat nearly everything I read on AIBU with suspicion, which I know isn't fair on genuine posters. Which is a pity as AIBU should be and, at its best ,still is a brilliant resource and source of mutual support.

To be fair, I genuinely don't know what, if anything, can be done by mods/MNHQ to improve the status quo. MNHQ were good enough to write me a detailed email explaining how they mod the site and the ethos behind their decision making, but until there's something more rigorous in place, I'm out.

I fear that eventually the entire board will become so full of crap that there won't be any genuine posters left and it will become an endless feedback loop of goaders, bullshitters, emotional vampires and Walter Mitty types, all peddling nonsense to one another.

Anyway, farewell and good luck to all.

Ah don't go, Compos.

I feel the same as you about the a lot of threads, by the way. But there is still a wealth of good stuff here.

I assume that half of Relationships is written by the same writers circle, and the BOxroom weirdo. And half of AIBU by people trolling for kicks.

Just give what you can be bothered to give, it's still fun. And just stick to giving serious advice to the names you recognise.

We need a [jaded] emoticon, here.

Pagwatch · 13/08/2013 08:08

Ah ComposHat, I think it's worse here in the summer but I do kind of agree.
I was tempted to bugger off last night after a thread upset me and I never get upset on here.

SpottyDottie · 13/08/2013 08:09

Don't close your account, just don't use it. Have a break and if you still feel the same in a bit of time/don't miss MN at all, then close the account.

GlaikitFizzog · 13/08/2013 08:10

Hide aibu, seriously it makes mn a whole different place. I pop in to aibu only occasionally and I only every see certain posters on there, no where else. Hide aibu hide the fighty side of mn.

Nagoo · 13/08/2013 08:11

The summer holidays is never the right time to make a considered flounce.

I would seriously consider hiding AIBU though, and see if the silliness of chat can't restore you a bit?

I love MN for it's humour, and I'm still finding plenty of that if I'm picky about what I click.

AKissIsNotAContract · 13/08/2013 08:12

Don't go Compos, you are one of my favourite posters (even though you wear Clarks shoes).

Just wait until the summer holidays are over, it goes back to normal then.

usualsuspect · 13/08/2013 08:12

I hear you, I feel exactly the same.

Relaxedandhappyperson · 13/08/2013 08:12

Flouncer's corner is that way --->

Takes seat in Flouncer's corner...gets polystyrene cup of coffee and sits down to read 13 month old copy of Grazia.

Yep. Been feeling like this a while now.

I stick to chat and cakes/baking.

I seem to be rolling my eyes at 90% of stuff on here lately.

I cant close my account or I will be forced to read the dm sidebar of shame on my way to work instead. And we all know that can never be a good way to start the day.

Pagwatch · 13/08/2013 08:17

Yes, maybe hide aibu.
And some posters
And some thread titles
And some topics.
That will help

HeathRobinson · 13/08/2013 08:18

Just have a break for a bit? - I've had a year out before now.

IceCreamForCrow · 13/08/2013 08:18

Good and bad bits to mn like all chat sites. I've been around for years and every so often someone will say something similiar..that the place is going to hell in a hand cart.

It's not any worse or better than it's ever been imo. It just is what it is and can change from good to bad in a minute and depending on how you feel on any given day.

There never was a golden age when eveything was wonderful. I think people confuse that with the novelty of first using it, which inevitably wears off.

Sounds like you need a break to give it some perspective.

passmetheprozac · 13/08/2013 08:21

I feel the same way, I normally lurk and post from time to time. I've been here three years and it does get worse over the holidays.

Tbh it has gotten to the point where I only look at threads started by 'known' posters. And that's on both aibu and chat.

I have had some amazing advice and support on the mental health boards. And some tears and laughs on chat. And some rage on aibu!

Take a break, it will settle down. Smile

Lilacroses · 13/08/2013 08:21

I know what you mean with regard to the fake threads/wind up threads, they are so annoying. However I still think there is much to enjoy. Go and have a break and then see how you feel.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 13/08/2013 08:22

What TSC said.

ComposHat · 13/08/2013 08:22

f we all do that the credulous thickoes will not have anyone to stop them fundraising for walking frames for prematurely born unicorn twins

I know! The fools.

Mind you another reason to leave is that I'm going to be very busy helping my new friend from Nigeria. It is really a funny story: his email says he's a prince and he needs my help to transfer a large sum of money out of the country.

How nice of him to pick me when there are so many other people who could have helped him.

gordyslovesheep · 13/08/2013 08:24

You make very valid points but yabu to leave ...don't let the idiots win x

usualsuspect · 13/08/2013 08:26

Please don't leave, you make me laugh.

HoneyDragon · 13/08/2013 08:26

Take a break, but don't de register as I fucking love your name and it would be a shame to use it.
Btw UANBU in the sentiment of your post.

HoneyDragon · 13/08/2013 08:26
