AIBU to hang my boots up and then retire from AIBU/MN?

Right, been here for two years, learned a few things, had a few laughs, been impressed with the kindness and thoughtfulness of people and was helped through one particularly difficult episode.

But I've had enough. I'm closing my account down this week.

I'm not sure if things have got worse of late, or the scales have fallen from my eyes, but AIBU seems stuffed to the rafters with threads that don't sit right with me. Either they're goady (the 'classic' benefit basher thread endlessly recycled) trolling attempts or threads you know can't be true as they contain information that contradict what the poster wrote a couple a days ago.

I'm at the stage now, where I am so jaded that I treat nearly everything I read on AIBU with suspicion, which I know isn't fair on genuine posters. Which is a pity as AIBU should be and, at its best ,still is a brilliant resource and source of mutual support.

To be fair, I genuinely don't know what, if anything, can be done by mods/MNHQ to improve the status quo. MNHQ were good enough to write me a detailed email explaining how they mod the site and the ethos behind their decision making, but until there's something more rigorous in place, I'm out.

I fear that eventually the entire board will become so full of crap that there won't be any genuine posters left and it will become an endless feedback loop of goaders, bullshitters, emotional vampires and Walter Mitty types, all peddling nonsense to one another.

Anyway, farewell and good luck to all.

Do you think it was Amrapalli's goat that pushed the toddler down the stairs. House goats and toddlers are not a good mix, what if the goat reverted to the wild and ATE the toddler?

RenterNomad · 13/08/2013 09:28

Letting your DW change the password is a good idea, a bit like putting the key to the biscuit cupboard next to the grapes.

Or try using something like LeechBlock (on Mozilla Firefox), which lets you time out a particular domain, between certain hours, a cumulative total for the day, etc. That reslly helped me stop wasting time on MN, and that's important: at times of year like this, there's not enough "substance" to "last" a three -hour session, whereas half an hour would make it feel like a better place. Smile

SconeInSixtySeconds · 13/08/2013 09:29

I have aibu hidden, so I only pop in when curiosity gets the better of me I am bored. It has improved my MN experience immeasurably.

I like your posts for what it's worth - you are a good cheese - and if you go the quality fromage section will be lacking.

Thepowerof3 · 13/08/2013 09:33

I just don't understand all the angst about it though surely its a non decision? If you like going on this website keep doing so if not don't look at it, what am I missing? If you've made good friends on here surely you can email each other to catch up??

mignonette · 13/08/2013 09:34

I think maybe some posters need to sort out their spam filters Grin.

I don't understand why you can't just hide AIBU? Yes i get that you are drawn to it but if it is not there then you will unlearn this behaviour.

Damning the whole of MN because of a few (admittedly vocal) posters and threads is a bit of an over reaction. Maybe something else underpinning this? I have noticed an increase in sheer viciousness on here with people saying that which they would never say face to face. And an increase in benefit bashing but seeing as that is top led from our acting government what can we do?

Better to stay and hide that which is problematic for you.

YouTheCat · 13/08/2013 09:39

Aw stick about and just keep clicking on report every time some goady fucker starts another benefits bashing thread.

Pinupgirl · 13/08/2013 09:41

If mn is upsetting you that much then it probably is time to leave. Its only a chat forum after all.

Although I agree its madness the amount of bullshit people on here will believe.

LoveBeingItsABoy · 13/08/2013 09:42

Seriously just take a break, enjoy rl for a while

Thepowerof3 · 13/08/2013 09:53

Yes real life is where it's at, it'll help you put any upsetting comments you see on here in to perspective

GobbySadcase · 13/08/2013 09:55

I frequently feel the same. Now I just nc every time the wankers grind me down.

ZingWidge · 13/08/2013 10:00

hi Ems Wink

ComposHat haven't been on MN for a year, so I'm still a newbie - but guess what, when I first joined I wanted to flounce after 4 hours! I kid you not!

I think it was MaryZ who kindly pointed out that there's so much going on - and she was right.

please don't change your name and don't go either. yes, take a break if you must - but come back after the cucumber season is over!

TheGinLushMinion · 13/08/2013 10:09

Tis indeed a pile of shite at the moment, just have a break from it-works for me.

Hopasholic · 13/08/2013 10:13

But if you go I will no longer be ale to shout 'COMPOST CORNER' in my head every time I see your MN nickname. Can't even think what TV programme that was from Blush Tiswas???? Sorry if you're not an old gimmer and have no bloody idea what I'm talking about Grin

thebody · 13/08/2013 10:23

personally I park my goat in the mother and baby space.

everlong you are never narky!!

RubyGoat · 13/08/2013 10:32

Think I agree with you OP. just retired from an especially annoying thread myself. Made my blood boil. Frustrating though as I don't have any mum friends in RL so I need to get advice etc from somewhere.

ZingLovesComposHat · 13/08/2013 11:09

please stay

Wink
ZingLovesComposHat · 13/08/2013 11:10

that would be a good decision TSC if you stayed.

(I'm nothing if not dedicated!Grin)

RubyGoat · 13/08/2013 11:21

It was the same thread as TSC. Grr.

Fed up of all the trolling. DH will be happy though as it will mean I spend more time on housework. Excellent.
