AIBU to hang my boots up and then retire from AIBU/MN?

Right, been here for two years, learned a few things, had a few laughs, been impressed with the kindness and thoughtfulness of people and was helped through one particularly difficult episode.

But I've had enough. I'm closing my account down this week.

I'm not sure if things have got worse of late, or the scales have fallen from my eyes, but AIBU seems stuffed to the rafters with threads that don't sit right with me. Either they're goady (the 'classic' benefit basher thread endlessly recycled) trolling attempts or threads you know can't be true as they contain information that contradict what the poster wrote a couple a days ago.

I'm at the stage now, where I am so jaded that I treat nearly everything I read on AIBU with suspicion, which I know isn't fair on genuine posters. Which is a pity as AIBU should be and, at its best ,still is a brilliant resource and source of mutual support.

To be fair, I genuinely don't know what, if anything, can be done by mods/MNHQ to improve the status quo. MNHQ were good enough to write me a detailed email explaining how they mod the site and the ethos behind their decision making, but until there's something more rigorous in place, I'm out.

I fear that eventually the entire board will become so full of crap that there won't be any genuine posters left and it will become an endless feedback loop of goaders, bullshitters, emotional vampires and Walter Mitty types, all peddling nonsense to one another.

Anyway, farewell and good luck to all.

Blimey its an internet chat site! If you are so invested in it, perhaps you should give it a rest.

MardyBra · 13/08/2013 08:34

Agree with all the sentiments on this thread. In a nutshell: you're one of the good'uns, don't go, don't let the bastards win, just be selective.

I'm on here less these days - but pounce on a thread by certain posters if I see one, let others pass me by and don't get sucked in if there's a whiff of goadery or trollery.

thebody · 13/08/2013 08:39

for goodness sake its obviously mostly giddy piss taking on aibu and that's what makes it fun.

personally the thread about the dogs in the car made me snort with laughter last night.

the thread on suecide made me cry.

it's an Internet site with glimpses of RL.

don't over think it. that's what total RL is for. this is escape.

composhat

YABVU!
don't you dare flouncing or I'll hunt you down and kick your butt!Wink

here, eat a ChillWidge and I made you a Brew.

now, why don't you forget AIBU threads for a while, there's so much going on! have you read the "almighty gaffs", "vital things you left at home" or "hilarious injuries" threads yet?

come on, cheer up, you know better than that!Smile

colourmehappytheresasofainhere · 13/08/2013 08:40

I've been thinking the same, so many weird threads and been completely confused!! And some have really upset me.

ComposHat · 13/08/2013 08:44

Alas, I can't seem to help myself with the goadery and the trollery. I am attracted to them, like a fly to shite, so I am as much to blame as anyone.

I have behaved quite badly recently and yelled 'troll' when I shouldn't have done. I didn't know, it was just an inkling that something wasn't right, but I just yelled 'troll' at the poster. If the story was true she was in quite a vulnerable position and I made things worse.

I was thoroughly ashamed of myself and I don't like the way I act on here sometimes. I do need (at the very least) a long break from it.

and btw I'll come and help you sort your Nigerian princess' problems - I can afford to leave the kids and get paid help what with all the money I won on the lottery I didn't even buy a ticket for!Grin

(who here knew Nigera was a kigdom?Blush )

AuntieStella · 13/08/2013 08:49

If it's the time to go, it's the time to go.

You might wantto think about having a break for a few months, rather than de-regging completely. See how I all seems after the summer holidays.

And after posters from a certain cycling site go away (thread this month with posters there talking about repeated MN bans).

ComposHat · 13/08/2013 08:50

Aw cheers Zing

Yes I thought Nigeria was a republic too!

WhatNowThen · 13/08/2013 08:52

Look at you lot boasting about your Nigerian friends. Only this very morning I had an e mail from a Holy Man in America who, through his communion with Christ, had been commanded to send me $2 million. Is that not wonderful?

I do know what you mean about being attracted to the goadery and trollery. That used to be me too. I had to stop and it was hard, but I did. Now I'm fine and I read them, roll my eyes and watch the others dig themselves into an early banning by being taken in. It's worth a try - you'd be surprised how easy it is.

RandallPinkFloyd · 13/08/2013 08:53

I took a break for a while and slowly got sucked back in recently. There is a lot of shit going on here atm but I do think it's just another cycle. MN seems to go through them over the course of the year and the summer holidays are always a bad time.

Everyone is tetchy, its wedding season, the holiday trolls invade, we all get the arse and eventually stomp off in a huff.

Then September comes, things calm down and we creep back on hoping no one noticed our dramatic exit.

Just have a break if it's pissing you off, MN should be fun not a chore. It's also good to step back and get a bit of perspective if you're getting too involved.

No point de-regging, it won't change anything, (Unless you're feeling a need to press the de-reg button in a flurry of righteous rage). MN will still be here, it will still be up to you if you read it or not. It'll just piss you off if you do decide you want to come back and have to wear the side bollocks of shame.

ComposHat · 13/08/2013 08:57

Yes, creeping back in after giving it the big fuck you all exit, leaving stage right cymbals crashing in a self righteous fury will be very mortifying.

I might get my DW to change my password and not tell me what she's changed it to. I am too weak to go cold turkey.

Emilythornesbff · 13/08/2013 08:58

Well I'd miss you composhat
Maybe a little break would help. Back for a fresh start after a couple of weeks off. Helps with the perspective I find.

Emilythornesbff · 13/08/2013 08:59

Oh bloody he'll don't NC, that's too confusing for me.

usualsuspect · 13/08/2013 09:00

I was on a break and then something happened to a poster I care about. I only came back to see how she was and got sucked back in.[weak]

Emilythornesbff · 13/08/2013 09:00

Morning widge

magimedi · 13/08/2013 09:02

I totally understand how you feel & I've only been here a year (nearly). I've learnt a lot & lot about myself & my bullshit radar is much better than it was.

AIBU is irritating the fuck out of me at the moment, but I'm going to be away from the internet soon, for some weeks so I'll just hold out till then.

August is known as 'The Silly Season' - and not just on MN.

Don't go - we need people like you.

RandallPinkFloyd · 13/08/2013 09:13

Good plan Wink

Amrapaali · 13/08/2013 09:16

The thing that REALLY gets my goat is the topic will be nothing to do with you being unreasonable or not.

"AIBU to have helped an old lady across the road?" "AIBU to have stopped my toddler falling down the stairs?" Really??

Some people need so much validation for their very existence it's scary..

And yes, Compos you should have used the Flouncer's Corner Angry

Clearly you need a break from MN Grin

Thepowerof3 · 13/08/2013 09:18

Stay or go, it's just a website.

HoneyDragon · 13/08/2013 09:19

What if the toddler fell down the stairs and knocked the old lady into the road?!

thebody · 13/08/2013 09:19

miles better than net mums though.

if you need to go then your choice but its sad as you are one of the funny posters, and a bloke to boot.

anyway I am off as overheard a conversation outside costcutters about trapped dogs in a car and the woman looks ugly so obviously need to scream at her.

magimedi · 13/08/2013 09:20

What if the toddler fell down the stairs and knocked the old lady into the road?!

And there was a chicken trying to cross at the same time Shock
