AIBU to hang my boots up and then retire from AIBU/MN?

Right, been here for two years, learned a few things, had a few laughs, been impressed with the kindness and thoughtfulness of people and was helped through one particularly difficult episode.

But I've had enough. I'm closing my account down this week.

I'm not sure if things have got worse of late, or the scales have fallen from my eyes, but AIBU seems stuffed to the rafters with threads that don't sit right with me. Either they're goady (the 'classic' benefit basher thread endlessly recycled) trolling attempts or threads you know can't be true as they contain information that contradict what the poster wrote a couple a days ago.

I'm at the stage now, where I am so jaded that I treat nearly everything I read on AIBU with suspicion, which I know isn't fair on genuine posters. Which is a pity as AIBU should be and, at its best ,still is a brilliant resource and source of mutual support.

To be fair, I genuinely don't know what, if anything, can be done by mods/MNHQ to improve the status quo. MNHQ were good enough to write me a detailed email explaining how they mod the site and the ethos behind their decision making, but until there's something more rigorous in place, I'm out.

I fear that eventually the entire board will become so full of crap that there won't be any genuine posters left and it will become an endless feedback loop of goaders, bullshitters, emotional vampires and Walter Mitty types, all peddling nonsense to one another.

Anyway, farewell and good luck to all.

oh I loved Belle & Sebastian, what a good story

hi Ems
'tis me Zing.

BOF · 13/08/2013 17:13

Oh, I know. But that's what she would say- I was just saving us all the wait.

JenaiMorris · 13/08/2013 17:21

AIBU is giving Tripadvisor a run for its money - there are some right thickos on MN at the mo. Not necessarily on this thread Grin

UnitedZingDom · 13/08/2013 18:04

oh well I take everything back, let's leave AIBU altogether.

I have now managed to upset a bunch of people on a thread by posting after reading the first few pages only, not realizing that the toned changed compeletly since!

I didn't know I had to wade through 300+ posts so I can say whether OP is BU or not.

or that I'm obliged to explain my "vote"

or that I'm not allowed to have my own opinion!
never mind at least 30 people posted YABU before me and I simply agreed, I get torn apart.

yes I agree, reading back it's unfortunate timing, but my opinion stands.

ffs!

Emilythornesbff · 13/08/2013 18:15

Hey zing

I agree, it's annoying sometimes on a very long thread.
YANBU Grin
What thread were you on? Need to go and see now.

RipRC · 13/08/2013 18:17

Yabu to start a thread about it. It's the nature of forums that they come repetitive some times you need a break other times you need to cut ties.

Surely if you find a thread insulting, monotonous or whatever it's easy to ignore it. There is a wide variety of threads posted, find the ones you enjoy and post these, there's no rule to say you have to read and post on every thread.

WhiteandGreen · 13/08/2013 18:20

It seems a bt attention seekey to write a post about it. Just go.

usualsuspect · 13/08/2013 18:23

Everyone seeks attention on a forum, that's the point.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 13/08/2013 18:23

OP YANBU I was away from internet access last week, logged back on and it was goady fucker central. I believe very little I read any more. Off again next week for an internet free fortnight am really hoping things are better in the autumn.

usualsuspect · 13/08/2013 18:24

I mean no.point posting if everyone ignores you.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 13/08/2013 18:25

usualsuspect Isn't the point of a forum to chat, whine, rant, rave, argue with random strangers and call it a 'debate' and to discuss our pubic hair preferences?

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 13/08/2013 18:28

Grin does no one understand what BOf is getting at? Lolz!

Tis rare I cotton on to these things!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 13/08/2013 18:32

I do believe she is channelling the scottish one :)

usualsuspect · 13/08/2013 18:34

Yes a forum is all those things, but we all seek attention on here.

Am here, Emily. Just got in from work, it's been a crap day. Marginally mollified by a certain message from MNHQ.

pointythings · 13/08/2013 19:13

Don't go, ComposHat... I'm still a relative newbie (3 years) and I agree that AIBU goes through stages of horribleness - but I can't forget how much really good support I got here on AIBU when I had a sad rant about my Dad's Parkinsons. It made me cry and made me feel so much better... And recently the thread I started about ESTA saved me from travelling without the DDs' US passports which could have got us in real trouble - even now AIBU is not all bad.

I don't much like the benefit bashing threads though, have made the mistake of engaging a few times only to hide the thread in disgust. On the other hand there's the parents of fictitious children thread going on at the moment and that's showing mad giggle potential.
