to think this dog needs to go to the effing vets?

PILs went out, their dog was fine in the garden, they come back an hour or two later and she's only walking on 3 legs. Back leg bent and not touching the floor, she can't extend it at all. Moans when leg is touched.

3 days later OH and I find out, I ask whether she's been to the vets. "No, she's just pulled her leg". (She's still walking on only 3 legs, appears to be in pain).

7 days later OH and I visit, she's still walking on 3 legs and falls over/collapses when she tries to crouch. Basically there is no improvement. FIL says she's fine and he's not taking her to the vets. He says if it is the same by the weekend (will be 14 days) then he'll take him the following week (maybe 16-18 days later).

OH offers to take her to the vets, FIL says "only if you're fucking paying for it."

They're pretty well off, certainly well off enough to pay a vet (dog not insured).

AIBU to think that it is cruel not to be taking the dog to the vets now?!

Just read that over and when I say the leg is bent, I mean that she's got it pulled up to her body. Not that its at an odd angle

YANBU. Utter bastards Angry

SquinkiesRule · 28/05/2013 21:34

Poor dog, they should be ashamed of themselves.

TheImpracticalCat · 28/05/2013 21:35

:(

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 28/05/2013 21:35

Yes, that's cruel.

It's either the vets or call the RSPCA.

Bobyan · 28/05/2013 21:36

I'm no fan of the RSPCA but I think you should report them.

TheSeventhHorcrux · 28/05/2013 21:36

We were actually going to kidnap her and take her to the vets ourselves but nowhere local was open yesterday

Whoknowswhocares · 28/05/2013 21:36

Report the bastards to the RSPCA?

squeakytoy · 28/05/2013 21:36

cruel cunts...

:(

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 28/05/2013 21:37

She could have a broken leg or anything. Ffs. Bastards.

tabulahrasa · 28/05/2013 21:38

Yes it needs to go to the vet - and withholding medical treatment is classed as animal cruelty as far as the law goes.

TheSeventhHorcrux · 28/05/2013 21:41

The irritating thing is that they can afford it. I really don't understand what the issue is.

OP posts:
StuntGirl · 28/05/2013 21:46

Take the POOR dog to the vets and reports your dickhead parents in law to the RSPCA.

StuntGirl · 28/05/2013 21:46

Poor was not meant to be in capitals!

Bobyan · 28/05/2013 21:49

Take her to the vets and then re-home her, that will teach them. I'm disgusted with them.

dietstartstmoz · 28/05/2013 21:50

Can you and your H take the dog to the vets, if it was me I would be going round and physically taking the dog and paying for initial visit, and then shaming them into paying when you know what treatment the dog needs. Please please take the poor dog to the vets.

LEMisdisappointed · 28/05/2013 21:52

Fucking cunts :( This reminds me of one time when i was working as a vet nurse and i had to accompany the vet to put a dog to sleep. OMFG - the poor bloody dog had bone cancer and it was at such an advanced state that the dogs leg had broken and was just dangling - How i didn't punch the fucking cow of an owner who was sat there sobbing that she didn't want to lose her dog!!! That dog would have been in so much bloody pain - i am actually in tears thinking about it again.

Get that Dog to the vets now - there will be an out of hours vet somewhere - don't let it suffer anymore PLEASE :(

TheSeventhHorcrux · 28/05/2013 21:56

LEM - as a ex(?)vet nurse - do have any idea what the problem could be?

scratchandsniff · 28/05/2013 22:08

Oh my god what utter arseholes. Some people aren't fit to keep pets. Stuff like this makes my blood absolutely boil. Dogs etc rely on us to take care of them, it's our duty as their owner. Please go round there tomorrow and take the dog to the vets. Please come back and update us. Poor dog.

alcibiades · 28/05/2013 22:09

Do they not understand that injured animals behave differently from injured humans? I have to admit that I didn't really know that - until I started watching those "Animal Cops" programmes on Animal Planet. Animals are incredibly good at coping with pain, but all the other signs are surely not ones that caring and responsible owners could ignore for so long. Especially when money isn't an issue.

Although I don't rate the RSPCA very highly, I think this is a case they'd be worth contacting about. But if you can get the dog to a vet first, and then report, that would be the kindest thing to do.

Naysa · 28/05/2013 22:11

There have been occasions where my dog has been lame and we've kept an eye on him. If it lasts more than a few hours we ring the vet for advice. A couple of times the vet said leave him overnight. Another time we rushed him straight up.

In the situation you've described I'd be ringing the RSPCA tbh. 14 days is not on. 1 day without a vet's advice is not on really IMO.

OH will try to tomorrow. Don't want to cause a family feud. Equally don't want a dog to suffer

LEMisdisappointed · 28/05/2013 22:13

Sorry OP, i don't - it could be a number of things. A ruptured cruciate ligament springs to mind as she cant extend it, but also bone cancer is a distinct possibility - what sort of dog is it? To be totally honest with you, it doesn't matter, in the short term what it is, what is obvious is that the dog is in agony - dogs are very good at concealing pain and the fact that she cannot even weight bear and reacts when it is touched suggests she is really struggling. I cannot believe that they can't even get her some pain relief.

Your inlaws are cunts - sorry

toboldlygo · 28/05/2013 22:13

If it happened as suddenly as described I'd go for ruptured cruciate.

They are abusive, cruel, arseholing cunts of the highest order.
