PILs went out, their dog was fine in the garden, they come back an hour or two later and she's only walking on 3 legs. Back leg bent and not touching the floor, she can't extend it at all. Moans when leg is touched.

3 days later OH and I find out, I ask whether she's been to the vets. "No, she's just pulled her leg". (She's still walking on only 3 legs, appears to be in pain).

7 days later OH and I visit, she's still walking on 3 legs and falls over/collapses when she tries to crouch. Basically there is no improvement. FIL says she's fine and he's not taking her to the vets. He says if it is the same by the weekend (will be 14 days) then he'll take him the following week (maybe 16-18 days later).

OH offers to take her to the vets, FIL says "only if you're fucking paying for it."

They're pretty well off, certainly well off enough to pay a vet (dog not insured).

AIBU to think that it is cruel not to be taking the dog to the vets now?!

They are utter bastards to not take their dog to the vets.

We found our neighbours cat in our back garden dragging its leg and in pain late at night on New Year's Eve. His owners were away for the night and he'd crawled to the light from our window miawing for help (normally wouldn't come near our house due to feud with my cat). DH, who dislikes cats, took him straight away to the OOH vets in the next village and cried while the vet examined him (unfortunately the cat had to be put down the next day when the neighbours were back).

That's what you do when animals are in pain, as a decent human being. Glad to see you are on the case and will get that poor dog to the vet tomorrow. I'd be physically taking it myself and send PIL the bill. Is the dog microchipped?

JumpingJackSprat · 28/05/2013 22:46

I wouldnt worry about causing a feud... if the dog is in pain then they need someone to cause a fuss to make them realise this isnt on. hope the dog is ok.

Not pensioners. Both in full time jobs, paid off mortgage, 4+ holidays abroad a year, new car every few years etc.

:( poor poor dog that's just totally unacceptable and effing cruel.

LadyBeagleEyes · 28/05/2013 22:51

How lovely are you and your OH, Op.
If your ILs won't do it, at least there is someone that will.
Your ILs are bastards BTW.

Bakingtins · 28/05/2013 22:53

By the way, it's not the vets who are "effing", it's your ILs!

IIWM I would go to their house and kidnap the dog then take the dog into the vets and say they found it wandering on the street.
The vet will then treat the dog and if they can contact PIL they will have to pay the bill, if not the dog can be rehomed to a family that will actually look after it.

KittensoftPuppydog · 28/05/2013 23:04

Please take it to the vet.

TheSeventhHorcrux · 28/05/2013 23:13

OH has promised to find a way to get dog to vets tomorrow. Will update!

YANBU my dog has done something similar to her leg before, think it was Saturday night she was still eating etc so we took her on Monday vet gave her some painkillers she was fine the next day! I can understand not taking a dog immediately but after 3 days it should see the vet. I don't think the RSPCA are likely to do much though, but im not a fan of theres! Get her to the vets if you can?

tazzle22 · 28/05/2013 23:26

sounds like my dog when she tore her cruciate ligaments last year...needed op

its cruelty to not get animal treated that is in pain ........... fine leaving some thing like a limp for a day or so... but flipping heck dog on three legs for more than a week grrrrrr

LineRunner · 28/05/2013 23:30

It's against the law now isn't it to withhold vetinary treatment from an animal?

IneedAsockamnesty · 28/05/2013 23:38

Yes line, its one classed as animal cruelty.

They are total bastards who should not have animals in their care

LineRunner · 28/05/2013 23:42

Well maybe OP you should point out to them that the court appearance and fine would be more costly for them than taking the poor dog to the vet.

AdoraBell · 28/05/2013 23:54

Good luck OP, I really hope it turns out to be a minor injury. And YANDU, ILs are selfish uncaring idiots who shouldn't be allowed to keep pets.

Loulybelle · 28/05/2013 23:55

How disgustingly cruel, this is animal cruelty.

Vet fees are the reason that i wont get an animal without insurance.

AdoraBell · 29/05/2013 04:07

Actually, DH already has an excuse to take the dog to the vet, FIL's response as per your OP. Just tell him as per conversation I'm willing to fucking pay for the initial cunsultation, I'll get the vet to call you about your dog.

Cerisier · 29/05/2013 04:50

So many people forget to factor in vets fees when thinking what a pet will cost. They pretend it will never happen, and when it does happen are cruel and selfish in not getting medical attention for their pet.

I hope your OH has managed to get the dog to the vet by now or if not has called the RSPCA.

Dos anyone know, would a vet report an owner to the RSPCA/police for not getting medical attention quickly enough for an animal?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 29/05/2013 05:01

I realise it is five in the morning and I can't ask for an update yet, but I am really, really hoping that your OH will find some way to get that poor dog to a vet - ANY VET - as soon as opening hours commence.

ruledbyheart · 29/05/2013 09:44

If you cannot for whatever reason convince your PILs to let you or take the dog to the vets today, you really need to phone the RSPCA, you can do it anonymously at the end of the day the dog is suffering because of their ignorance and it's against the animal welfare act, they can face having the dog taken off them or even prosecution if this isn't rectified ASAP.

MammaTJ · 29/05/2013 10:46

I came on because of the title, prepared to tell you YABU. I have had neighbours report me to the RSPCA for my dogs 'untreated skin condition'. They checked me out and found that it was not untreated and in fact my dog is under regular treatment by the vet for a difficult skin condition.

With what you say though, YANBU, the dog needs the vet, they need to be prosecuted for neglect/abuse.
