PILs went out, their dog was fine in the garden, they come back an hour or two later and she's only walking on 3 legs. Back leg bent and not touching the floor, she can't extend it at all. Moans when leg is touched.

3 days later OH and I find out, I ask whether she's been to the vets. "No, she's just pulled her leg". (She's still walking on only 3 legs, appears to be in pain).

7 days later OH and I visit, she's still walking on 3 legs and falls over/collapses when she tries to crouch. Basically there is no improvement. FIL says she's fine and he's not taking her to the vets. He says if it is the same by the weekend (will be 14 days) then he'll take him the following week (maybe 16-18 days later).

OH offers to take her to the vets, FIL says "only if you're fucking paying for it."

They're pretty well off, certainly well off enough to pay a vet (dog not insured).

AIBU to think that it is cruel not to be taking the dog to the vets now?!

It's illegal to withhold vet care from an animal and I find it unbelievable that anyone would take on a pet knowing that if it got sick they would not be prepared to take it to a vet. Have you told them they are breaking the law? Poor dog Sad

Bibs123 · 29/05/2013 10:52

Could it be a thorn in the foot? Have a good look to see if anything obvious.

Really hope you've managed to get this dog to the vet. Hope the vet reports the fuckers for animal cruelty too.

milkymocha · 29/05/2013 11:08

Hows the dog?

crashdoll · 29/05/2013 11:14

Please update us when you can!

SybilRamkin · 29/05/2013 12:53

Hope dog is at the vet now.

PIL sound like complete arsewipes! Angry

SauvignonBlanche · 29/05/2013 12:57

Fingers crossed that OP is at the vets.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 29/05/2013 13:14

Hope you managed to dognap today. Thinking of you and the dog. X

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2013 14:13

I don't know what your situation is but would the PDSA help if it is an emergency and you don't have the money?

Bakingtins · 29/05/2013 14:17

The PDSA only help owners on low incomes and in receipt of certain means tested benefits details here It doesn't sound like a lack of money is really an issue to these owners, just a lack of will to spend it on the dog.

lottieandmia · 29/05/2013 14:24

I have sympathy for people who find themselves unable to afford a big vet's bill but in this case I have no sympathy at all for people who have the money to end this poor dog's suffering but would rather leave him to struggle Angry

Why the hell don't they have pet insurance anyway??

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2013 14:46

I know, Bakingtins but they might check the dog if OP is honest and she is on a low income. Or, at least advise her.

Bakingtins · 29/05/2013 15:03

Any vet will advise her. They'll advise her it needs to see a vet. The PDSA apply their criteria very strictly. It doesn't sound like the owners are on a low income in this case.

lottieandmia · 29/05/2013 15:06

The PDSA only help people who receive Council Tax Benefit.

WestieMamma · 29/05/2013 15:09

My little girl westie damaged her cruciate ligament jumping off the sofa on Christmas day. Christmas bloody day! The vet's bill was horrendous. Not from the cost of treatment, she got better with steroid injections and various tablets, but from the astronomical Christmas day call out charges. I wouldn't have left her to suffer for those 2 days let alone 2+ weeks.

I hope you've managed to get this poor dog some help OP. :(

VeganCow · 29/05/2013 16:36

Bastards. Uneducated, unfeeling selfish twats. I get that he holds the purse strings and is an arrogant know-it-all cunt. Whats her excuse?

Please update. Sounds like cruciate ligament injury, with it coming on suddenly.
Please come back and tell us the poor dog is now on painkiller and anti infammatories, whatever it is.

BinarySolo · 29/05/2013 17:17

Wow. We're skint but still managed to get out dog to the vets when she started limping. Lucky for us it was mild ligament damage which painkillers and a week of on lead walks fixed. Can't understand why they'd not go to the vets if they can afford it. Very very tight and rather callous.

DrHolmes · 29/05/2013 17:49

This is abuse.
I hope you have reported them. I don't care if they are your in-laws. Report them.
I hope you have taken it to the vet, although If i were you i'd have taken the dog as soon as i found out.
And I certainly hope you don't give the dog back to them. They obviously don't care about it.

I am so angry reading this.

DrHolmes · 29/05/2013 17:50

And they were idiots to not have the dog insured in the first place.

DreamingOfTheMaldives · 29/05/2013 17:54

OP, please come back and update us. I hope the dog has now been to the vets.

Poor, poor dog being left in pain. How could they do that. This thread has made me so very Sad and Angry

I'm going to give my dog a big cuddle.

TheSeventhHorcrux · 29/05/2013 18:28

Hi all,

Been at work all day sorry.

Firstly, in-laws are what I would describe as wealthy. Money isn't the issue here.

Secondly, OH went round today and talked them into taking her to the vets. FIL agreed (reluctantly I think) to take her TOMORROW. I am beyond angry that this has to go on yet another day but there isn't really much I can do about it. Very very cross and tried to get OH to make them take her today but they won't.

Sigh.
