to think this dog needs to go to the effing vets?

PILs went out, their dog was fine in the garden, they come back an hour or two later and she's only walking on 3 legs. Back leg bent and not touching the floor, she can't extend it at all. Moans when leg is touched.

3 days later OH and I find out, I ask whether she's been to the vets. "No, she's just pulled her leg". (She's still walking on only 3 legs, appears to be in pain).

7 days later OH and I visit, she's still walking on 3 legs and falls over/collapses when she tries to crouch. Basically there is no improvement. FIL says she's fine and he's not taking her to the vets. He says if it is the same by the weekend (will be 14 days) then he'll take him the following week (maybe 16-18 days later).

OH offers to take her to the vets, FIL says "only if you're fucking paying for it."

They're pretty well off, certainly well off enough to pay a vet (dog not insured).

AIBU to think that it is cruel not to be taking the dog to the vets now?!

Good news.

lottieandmia · 30/05/2013 19:06

Well done OP! I hope the dog feels better soon.

crossparsley · 30/05/2013 19:06

Well done to you and your OH, OP. if you are in London/SE I too fear it will be a fair bit more than £400 - maybe £500 with anaesthetist etc. but great that her owners have signed up for the operation.

Fuming at your FIL. I hope your MIL is, even if silently, and will put her own foot down the next time there is anything amiss with the poor animal.

Well done OP.Smile

SocialClimber · 30/05/2013 19:38

Glad the dog has been seen to and won't be in pain any longer.

Do your PIL feel guilty about any of this? I don't understand why anyone would leave a loved pet in this condition, especially when money isn't an issue.

Cassiphone · 30/05/2013 20:44

OP that's wonderful news, I'm so pleased!

alcibiades · 30/05/2013 20:45

Well done, TheSeventhHorcrux. In my opinion, you dealt with the situation extremely well. Ignore those who criticised your handling of the situation - they weren't having to deal with the complexity involved.

Hopefully, the dog will make a good recovery. Also, that the vet will be having words with your FIL and make him see the errors of his ways. And also, hopefully, your FIL will learn to have more respect for animals, and for you and your DH.

MissStrawberry · 30/05/2013 20:49

Thank goodness the dog is safe at the vets.

IME of vets bills £400 is a bloody bargain for surgery.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 30/05/2013 21:01

Good news OP, without your efforts I have no doubts that dog would still be suffering.

LollipopViolet · 30/05/2013 21:41

No abuse here OP - just glad the dog is getting the treatment needed. From the symptoms you described, I suspected ligament damage as that was how our dear boy acted when he did his :(

Unfortunately, he's 13 so surgery wasn't an option with us, we were told to take him home, and if he really couldn't cope with his leg, to take him to be PTS.

That was December, he's still about Grin he has painkillers but the pain is totally manageable and he's a very happy dog, if a not-so-active one these days.

lljkk · 30/05/2013 21:51

You did great, OP. Don't let the fewkers get you down

PoppadomPreach · 30/05/2013 23:09

Well done, OP. cannot believe the criticism you have been handed out here - I think those throwing the stones should realise that without your intervention, this poor dog would still be suffering. And hopefully family relations, as far as you want them, are intact.

Kungfutea · 31/05/2013 01:29

Well done op. I also think you did the best you could in a difficult situation.

AdoraBell · 31/05/2013 02:06

Well done OP, hope the surgery goes well and the dog makes a good recovery.

TheSeventhHorcrux · 31/05/2013 18:55

Surgery gone well, dog now all fixed - fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

Great news

MissStrawberry · 31/05/2013 20:02

Brilliant! I wish him well and a speedy recovery.

AdoraBell · 01/06/2013 02:16

Fantástico, well done To you and DH have you thought of adpoting the dog?

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 01/06/2013 10:25

And how do they feel about what they've put their dog through? Have they had anything to say about that?

  • and well done to you, because if it wasn't for the two of you nagging, who's to say if they would ever have done anything?
AllOverIt · 01/06/2013 21:57

Well done OP. What a relief that the dog has been seen. Hope your PILs felt ashamed of themselves. Angry

crashdoll · 01/06/2013 22:24

Glad he had the op. Well done to you both, you saved that dog from an awful lot of pain.

Your PILs don't deserve that dog. Being a dog owner is a privilege not a right.

TheSeventhHorcrux · 02/06/2013 18:32

That's the bit that I don't get. I asked OH if they seemed in any way guilty and he said that they feel sorry for the dog but don't feel guilty ?! I said that it was their fault that it had gone on too long but apparantly thats not how they see it. FIL seems more annoyed about the cost.

OP posts:
MissStrawberry · 02/06/2013 18:36

It was obvious it was all about the money and him not wanting to fork out for the poor animal. What will you do next time the dog needs treatment and they don't want to take him?
