To think its a bit control freakery to dictate guests wear a certain colour to a wedding?

SIL recently announced her engagement, fantastic news.

Recently found out there is a 'black and white' theme.

Now I know it's her day, blah blah, but seriously, we get told what colours to wear? Agh, means 4 new outfits for us all to buy.

AIBU to think its a bit diva-ish?

Ive have seen it before and tbh, the photos are all very effective, her wedding I guess.

Sensible theme. Everybody should have something black and white. Not very demanding at all.

Oh gawd, I wouldn't dare wear a different colour, it obviously means a lot to her. It's just the thought of buying wedding outfits is daunting enough, without being limited by colour!

I saw a 4 weddings with a black and white theme once everybody was to wear black somebody wore bright pink with a huge fascinator do that just to mess with her head

YANBU. I would just make it basically black and/or white but dress it up with something really colourful like a scarf. If asked you can then say 'but it is black/white'.

Seriously I don't have a black dress. And I've got a lovely teal dress that needs an outing.
To top it all off, DH saying he is going to hire a white suit. I'm not sure if he is being serious or not. I'm thinking of man from del monte.

Surely you would have something new to wear to a wedding in any case? It's a bit bridezilla but can you really not find something black and/or white? Really?

I've heard of this (didn't the Beckhams start it all off?) but never had it happen to me. I'd have to think seriously hard about if I wanted to go to such a 'do'. In your case I'd try to chat to SiL before the formal invitations go out, and tell her how seriously controlling that is, and that a lot of people won't like it, and either won't come, or will wear something else anyway (if confident, outgoing people) or buy something they don't necessarily feel good in, and resent it (if less confident people).

We were invited to a wedding where we were told NOT to wear black, only spring colours. I was gutted cos I don't do pale colours. Was my cousins bride who made the 'request' so my mum insisted I respect it. I wore a horrid dress and when we got there I was silently fuming to see loads of people wearing black and looking lovely! But at least the bride wasn't upset with me.....

Unless they want to buy everyones outfits then they should let them wear what they want.

Chub - I might have got something new, but I really struggle with dresses. I'm 5ft1, so need a petite one. It's not until next year, but I am going to see if any in shops now.

No I wouldnt buy new for a wedding, TK Maxx is my best friend when I do though.

I think that, on reflection, I would say that I hadn't got anything black or white and wasn't intending to buy new.

It's a bit of a silly choice, few will wear White as it's one of those colours that you either love or hate, I bet the majority will wear black and then it'll be very somber looking.
