Am I really that unreasonable to get a little narked by that turn of phrase and think its only used by really, really pious people? The sort of people who on hearing you are pregnant ask whether the child was planned before offering congratulations.

And the face and bemused really face, if you say "yes, I was taking it properly, yes I am aware some medications affect it".

BTW I am not horribly offended by people saying this,just as I said narked. It says on any literature you get with any contraception that it may fail. And secretly I believe failure statistics are a lot higher than those quoted on the packet

AIBU to correct the phrase to "There is no excuse for unplanned pregnancy as long as you stay at least 10 foot away from any uncontrolled sperms", next time I hear this helpful nugget of wisdom?

My son is the product of the pill fail. I was on it 4 year then got pregnant. He was not planned. The only 100% way of never getting pregnant is celibacy

Well there are reasons for unplanned pgy most definitely. Contraception failure, lack of education/access to contraception.

But I had an unplanned pgy and it was entirely my fault because I was drunk, knew fine well about about contraception and flung caution to the wind. There was no reason for my carelessness.

YANBU to find this statement annoying. However, I would agree with it if it were changed ever so slightly:

Anyone who asks whether a pregnancy was planned needs to be told that that's none of their fucking business imo. And YANBU, contraception can fail even whe it's being used properly.

I realise that might not make a lot of sense. I mean the people who can't be arsed, think they have their dates under control, are too drunk (and I don't mean drunk and coerced into sex), think it won't happen to them etc.

Thing is is that the small percentage allowed for contraception failure is normally down to human error not the contraception actually failing. So really there isn't excuse but yes it's a but pious and its bloody rude when people ask "was it planned" .

I had an unplanned pregnancy myself due to my partner at the time piercing condoms but it was a complicated situation and I could've tried harder to make sure that didn't happen - and love my DS to bits.

I was amazed at how effective the mini pill was when I used to regularly forget to take it, or took it at the wrong time etc. The manufacturers obviously factored in a lot of human error!

My currently expected DD is unplanned but that was just from getting a bit too carried away, I can't blame it on anyone except me and DH and we're rather thrilled anyway.

Yes but no.

Of course actual contraception failures happen. But a lot of failures are not the contraception but the people using it. Not taking pills when they should, not doubling up when sick or using meds that will affect it, not getting an injection on time, not using condoms properly.

That said, who really gives a fuck how other people get pregnant?

You do get tutty people who havnt had contraception failure but it does happen

Spilt condom is human error - they only split when they aren't put on properly, that's not contraception failure.

There is of course the morning after pill, for when your planning goes out the window.

There is no excuse for an unplanned pregnancy.

I got pg with a mirena coil in place, having been advised that it was the most reliable contraception available.

Ds was a Depo baby, so can say definite contraceptive fail

DD was a very drunkenly hastily inserted Cap and the sober assumption that it didn't matter about getting MAP as I couldn't possibly get pg only a few days after my period

But, it was just the attitude when I heard it last. Almost as if a unplanned pg is entirely due to fecklessness and not simply wanting to have sex with a partner. And then the eyerolling about being pg whilst taking contraception, as if that made the person in question even more stupid.

And it is easy to get carried away when you're enjoying yourself whether it's Sex, Chocolate or a nice Rioja.

My DD is the product of the pill AND condoms, there was no illness, no anti biotics and we never had a condom failure...

if you are relying on the contraception you wouldn't know it had failed till it was too late for MAP.

And I couldn't take the MAP, jumping, as I was not aware my contraception had failed

The MAP isn't 100% effective either.

Maybe people should take the pill, use a condom and take the MAP after each encounter? And wear plastic pants.
