There is no excuse for unplanned pregnancy when contraception is readily available

Am I really that unreasonable to get a little narked by that turn of phrase and think its only used by really, really pious people? The sort of people who on hearing you are pregnant ask whether the child was planned before offering congratulations.

And the Hmm face and bemused really face, if you say "yes, I was taking it properly, yes I am aware some medications affect it".

BTW I am not horribly offended by people saying this, just as I said narked. It says on any literature you get with any contraception that it may fail. And secretly I believe failure statistics are a lot higher than those quoted on the packet

AIBU to correct the phrase to "There is no excuse for unplanned pregnancy as long as you stay at least 10 foot away from any uncontrolled sperms", next time I hear this helpful nugget of wisdom?

I don't have a problem with you and I haven't made a personal attack against you.

Ok if you don't remember posting that due to wine related insomnia fair enough!

We'll leave it at that then.

Drunk MN-ing should be up there with drunking texting/dialling. Have done it myself.

AmberLeaf · 09/06/2012 16:31

Drunk not drunking

Promise I'm not drunk.

Springforward · 09/06/2012 16:34

YANBU. No method is 100% guaranteed.

It's also none of their business, of course!

sensuallettuce · 09/06/2012 16:38

Fair enough Confused

TheGruffalosbitch · 09/06/2012 16:39

I had the coil, no period and was breast feeding. That didn't stop the little bugger my darling 2nd being conceived.

sensuallettuce · 09/06/2012 16:46

They reckon with coils if you don't check the threads once a month (I don't) is the main reason for failure.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 09/06/2012 16:59

Sensual - I had a doctor check mine (she confirmed they were there) 2 weeks before I discovered I was 18 weeks pregnant.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 09/06/2012 17:04

Mine cool threads are so soft now they are near impossible to find. Perhaps I have a caustic fanjo? Confused

It troubles me the way some people think. I've heard it loads of times. "Well I have used contraception properly for x years and never been pregnant, therefore I know better." You are also saying everyone on this thread is a liar or an idiot. So as well as being closed-minded and having a genuine belief that your experiences are more valid than scientific evidence, you also boldly insult a large number of women who, realistically, don't have any reason to lie about it.

Fwiw I'm not offended on my behalf, dd was unplanned but result of carelessness, and no I've never had contraception failure resulting in pregnancy. I'm just open minded enough to know that doesn't necessarily mean that's the case for everyone.

sensuallettuce · 09/06/2012 17:13

I must be including myself in the idiots then Confused.

Scientific evidence proves that most unplanned pregnancies are down to human error rather than failure of contraception - that's not being horrible it's a fact - and I am not disputing the fact that contraception fails - when used properly it rarely does - I didn't use a condom correctly therefore I have a 10 yr old DS.

BabylannShallFall · 09/06/2012 17:17

There have been some people on the thread who have basically said ALL contraception failure is due to user error and that the women who claim not to have made any errors obviously don't read instructions and/or understand how contraception works.

So despite scientific evidence saying that even when used perfectly contraception can fail, some people continue to believe that because they never got pregnant, they are beacons of truth which show that actually, science is wrong, ' it can be avoided, and I an living proof!'

BabylannShallFall · 09/06/2012 17:19

It would be like me saying 'well I know no one wins the lottery because I've bought tickets for the past 8 years and never won'. Me not winning is not conclusive evidence that no one ever wins.

sensuallettuce · 09/06/2012 17:23

Maybe sometimes people do lie though - because they feel like an idiot (for taking a risk) not everyone but some?

Everyone seems to like to have an opinion about unplanned pregnancy - maybe its easier for those who care what others think.

Shakey1500 · 09/06/2012 17:33

I was on the pill, used a condom AND took the morning after pill and STILL fell pregnant Confused No missed pills or an antibiotic in sight. The nurse had to catch me when I fell off the stool!

FreudianSlipper · 09/06/2012 17:35

these scientific facts how are they formed

questionnaires, experiments on animals, keeping people locked in a room and watching their behaviour and who are behind these scientific facts pharmaceutical companies

scientific facts are not always as scientific as they sound because human behaviour is not predictable, these facts comes from scientific studies which are often flawed but the word scientific is very powerful

BabylannShallFall · 09/06/2012 18:31

I have no doubt that some people in the world lie, but I would not be so bold and arrogant to barge into a thread full of women saying "I didn't make any mistakes and contraception failed me" and tell them I disagreed and contraception can only fail if you make a mistake because my experience proves it and you're all either lying about it, or didn't properly follow instructions or read the documentation that came with it.

Moominsarescary · 09/06/2012 18:46

Moominsarescary · 09/06/2012 20:47

Thankyou everyone! Won't be telling people in rl till quite late on but had to tell someone!

RockChick1984 · 17/06/2012 14:29

Just to correct a fact that has popped up a few times on this thread: antibiotics DON'T affect how well the pill works! I was told this by my dr, and have double checked with 2 other health professionals. It used to be believed that it would stop the pill working, but that's now been disproved Smile

Nuttyprofessor · 17/06/2012 14:51

I lost my DD, stillborn. I was so petrified of becoming pregnant that I used the pill and condoms. No way I took any risk.

On the 1st anniversary I found out I was pregnant, no idea how that happened.

DS now 11
