There is no excuse for unplanned pregnancy when contraception is readily available

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 08/06/2012 09:45

Am I really that unreasonable to get a little narked by that turn of phrase and think its only used by really, really pious people? The sort of people who on hearing you are pregnant ask whether the child was planned before offering congratulations.

And the Hmm face and bemused really face, if you say "yes, I was taking it properly, yes I am aware some medications affect it".

BTW I am not horribly offended by people saying this, just as I said narked. It says on any literature you get with any contraception that it may fail. And secretly I believe failure statistics are a lot higher than those quoted on the packet

AIBU to correct the phrase to "There is no excuse for unplanned pregnancy as long as you stay at least 10 foot away from any uncontrolled sperms", next time I hear this helpful nugget of wisdom?

The MAP is not hundred per cent effective. Ds is proof. I took it correctly within the time limit and still fell pregnant

sensuallettuce · 08/06/2012 18:59

The MAP doesn't work if you have already conceived - then it will very possibly result in pregnancy.

TalHotBlond · 08/06/2012 19:16

Some people / combinations of partners must be more fertile than others though mustn't they?

And I bet people make mistakes with their contraception all the time without realising it.

I got pregnant on the pill but I had been having spotting for some time, not really realising it was a problem. I had been on the same pill for a long time which was a low-dose brand and it obviously didn't work for my body as well as I got older as I didn't change the way I took it in all the years I was on it.

Actually, three years ago I would probably have been a bit disbelieving of "accidental" pregnancies as I managed nine years on the pill without one!

Blush er our youngest DS was a bonus after IVF and eldest Ds was being ebf! :)

Sensuallettuce Pregnant from anal sex due to holes in the rectum?! Surely poo would seep through?

Krumbum · 08/06/2012 20:01

It's very unlikely to get pregnant from anal sex but might as well use a condom anyway as its cleaner and safer. If you had a fistula you would know about, and then probably not want anal, it would be agony!

In my defence, I did not intend this thread to end up the Friday Night Bumsex Thread.

It does prove however that all my threads end up going arse up Grin

And I quote Jurassic Park: nature always finds a way...

Unless you are a man or have had your womb and ovaries removed.

Pinkie29 · 08/06/2012 22:57

sensuallettuce where did I say you lied?? Your obviously reading things wrong and since when have people been required evidence to voice an opinion?? I have never ever heard of anyone getting pg through anal sex so was very surprised to see that statement and imagine the stats are very low and tbh it's common sense people are lacking when it comes to sexual health you only have to look at the chlamydia rates to know that

devonshiredumpling · 08/06/2012 23:04

i was told by a fertility specialist and my own ex gp (a gynaecologist) that i would NEVER have children due to a medical condition so both my children are unpanned (should have learned from the first)

I have got pg twice when using contraception, once with pill and again with Mirena+condom (doubled up and chose more reliable method after first failure). I had an abortion both times though - I had lots of reasons for not wanting a child at the time and those reasons didn't suddenly go away just because the contraception failed!

sashh · 09/06/2012 02:59

broken condom

taking antibiotics with the pill

rape

having D and V with the pill

FreeBirdsFlying · 09/06/2012 08:50

DH and I used the *if in doubt, pull out method for 3 years and didn't get pg. After DC3 was born we decided I would get the implant. 4 months after getting it I got a BFP.

Although when people realised they asked if it was congratulations or comiserations Hmm

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 09/06/2012 08:56

sashh Sad, very good point. People should also consider whether conception was caused after a woman being forced against there will. Another damn good reason not to ask or judge. Sad

I think rape is a different kettle of fish altogether that throws up all sorts of questions

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 09/06/2012 09:42

Yes Pinkie, but not questions that people should ask Sad

I was taking the pill and using condoms. I'd been on the pill for a while and I knew exactly how they worked. We always inspected the condoms after DP had "finished", so to speak, and we never found a single tear, rip, perforation or pinhole.

I still got pregnant.

Sometimes these things really do just happen, regardless of what you do to prevent it.

That being said, if you don't actively prevent getting pregnant, then you're actively trying to get pregnant. I think people don't realize that.

AmberLeaf · 09/06/2012 11:41

I find it scary that someone with such a judgy closeminded attitude works in sexual health, particularly with young people who would be less likely to give you shortshrift.

AmberLeaf · 09/06/2012 11:42

1st baby planned.

2nd and 3rd unplanned while correctly using the pill.

sensuallettuce · 09/06/2012 11:52

"Judgy & closed minded" - where exactly?

jandymaccomesback · 09/06/2012 12:02

Each of my children is the result of the failure of a different contraceptive. The only foolproof ones have been the snip (him) followed by an early menopause (me).

AmberLeaf · 09/06/2012 12:03

Sorry I'm carrying that over from another thread.

I'm just surprised that someone who works in this area is steadfastly stating that failure is only ever down to user error.

That is simply not true.

Moominsarescary · 09/06/2012 12:09

Agree with Amber I couldn't even bring myself to comment on that thread
