Nonperson · 12/02/2012 21:48

Yes being a professional footballer is a proper job, they work and train very, very hard.

DamnBamboo · 12/02/2012 21:49

What about designing furniture...

Is that a proper job?

What about designing buildings?

Greythorne · 12/02/2012 21:50

To be honest, I suspect fashion designer is very tough when the entire media industrial complex is waiting to shoot you down.

She is pretty, determined, hard-working and loyal.

I would not knock her, even though coal miners and midwives and Market traders are all working hard as well.

LaBoccaDellaVerita · 12/02/2012 21:50

Oooh some nasty jealous opinons here - especially the OP. If you're going to berate the Beckhams as talentless lazy fuckwits then you should at least have the good grace to heap a load - a very big load - of other people in there!

And as for 'doesn't design her own clothes' - on what do you base that snidey opinion?

MyLittleMiracle · 12/02/2012 21:51

Of course they are proper jobs. I dont agree with footballers getting paid the obscene amounts they do, but it is still a proper job, like her designing is. She wasnt a very good singer no, so she turned her hand to something else...whats the issue with that. I dont believe however that sniffing a perfume and agreeing to ave your name put on it is a proper job however!

Why do footballers get paid obscene amounts??? Yes they train everyday, and they train hard, but doesnt everyone work hard?

TheCrackFox · 12/02/2012 21:53

I don't think she designs the dresses - I have read that Roland mouret did although I may be wrong. She has had a great big dollop of luck in her life.

Snowboarder · 12/02/2012 21:53

I think they both work harder than me or my DH do if I'm honest. I don't think I could do all of that travelling OR raise 4 children along side demanding jobs.

I don't get why it's ok to give this family grief when they seem nice, respectable, devoted to each other and YES, hardworking. I'm a bit envious of everything they appear to have, I'll admit but no doubt they have worked very hard for it. Good on them.

Lueji · 12/02/2012 21:53

All respect for what she does (or seems to do), but it's not really a job.

Is she actually on someone's payroll?

squeakytoy · 12/02/2012 21:54

My only gripe about her is that she always looks so bloody pouty and miserable.. she looks lovely when she does smile.

I have seen her interviewed before, and she seems quite animated and can laugh at herself. I think if she were to lighten up a bit in front of the papparazzi she would do herself a big favour.

I think it would be interesting to see them both interviewed by J Ross at the same time. Beckham came across very well in that interview and a lot more articulate than he was ten years ago.

runningwilde · 12/02/2012 21:55

I am not their biggest fans at all but c'mon, they work hard even though I don't think she is a 'designer' in the truest sense as I am pretty sure she hasn't had fashion degree training or is skilled with cutting cloth etc and I bet she gets lots of help with design...

But I am sure they work hard so fair dues, she is an ordinary girl who is very determined and has done well to get to where she is

southeastastra · 12/02/2012 21:55

i bet it just riles real designers who spend years learning their craft, then she pops up, sketches a frock and someone else does the hard work

of course if someone could prove me wrong Grin.

and dave is getting a bit old and craggy to be posing in his pants with his chavvy tats.

next...

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/02/2012 21:56

ok - im not out to give them grief, i am sure they are a nice couple. im not jealous, (honestly! - i am very happy with my life and my lot!) but i cant compare what they do to what a nurse does, or a midwife, or a prison guard, or a baker, or a butcher or a police officer, or a shop worker, i just cant! most people raise their children - they are no different in that respect.

i must be as unreasonable as the audience who also laughed when he said it then....

OP posts:
aldiwhore · 12/02/2012 21:56

Just because someone gets paid a lot doesn't mean they don't work hard, nor does getting paid not much.

I think I get where you're coming from VicarInaTutu especially if you're dealing for pond life every day, not getting paid a fortune and can't afford to really enjoy your time off or choose when to have it.

I do think YABU though, or rather, its a slightly misdirected gripe. If she compared herself to someone working for minimum wage I woudl happily join in the Beckham Bashing that followed!

Snowboarder · 12/02/2012 21:56

Of course they've had a dollop of luck as well. Then again hasn't everyone. I count myself lucky to be woman living in this time with access to education and excellent healthcare. It's not Victora Beckham's fault that she wasn't born in a dehli slum or into the life of a Victorian scullery maid.

aldiwhore · 12/02/2012 21:57

Lueji My DH isn't on anyone's payroll... he still has a proper job? Strange!!

lashingsofbingeinghere · 12/02/2012 21:58

Read about her business here if you are interested

She has not used her own money but found a backer - presumably he thought she had something worth investing in. She has won awards. It is highly unlikely she gets someone else to design her stuff - how long would that secret last I wonder?

southeastastra · 12/02/2012 21:58

fgs why do people assume others are jealous when they have their say

we'll end up like american where everyone is fabulous even when they're shit

they're mediocre and that's why americans love them

JasperJohns · 12/02/2012 22:00

I agree with SEA. She's a 'designer' in the same way Katie Price is a 'novelist'.

And lovely though he undoubtedly is, DB in those tighty whiteys is just awful. How much money does he need!

LaBoccaDellaVerita · 12/02/2012 22:01

Exactly lashings - that would last about ten minutes as a secret in a cut throat business like fashion design. It's just absurd to say she doesn't do it herself - she's much too savvy to put herself in a position where she'd be open to ridicule if exposed.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 12/02/2012 22:03

There is something very odd about people being paid millions of pounds for kicking a ball around a field, even if they do do it exceptionally well. Or for being paid millions of pounds for drawing pictures of clothing.

There are many, many things in our society that are sickenly skewed and the lifestyles and income of the rich and famous are among them.

Oh fuck, I have just become a socialist Shock.

lilolilmanchester · 12/02/2012 22:04

I agree wholeheartedly that footballers are overpaid, and some celebrities make money for who knows what reason. .... but sorry, when you say David Beckham is "talentless" you lose any chance of having a reasonable discussion on the topic. If it's possible to be so talentless and play football for England then perhaps your DP/DH/you could apply for the job and you too could enjoy the spoils of a talentless career????

historyrepeats · 12/02/2012 22:04

I agree with you vicar.

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/02/2012 22:05

lashings - her name would bring investment.

funny how he appears on talk shows at the epitome of family life - yet he screwed the nanny only a few years ago, gets paid shed loads to kick a ball or stand in his tighty whities and she makes a living from pouting - she could never sing - and now is a fashion designer. im pretty sure that there are hundreds of talented designers out there who cant get a foot on the ladder....

their name is enough. i dont see that as a job. i just cant - sorry!

OP posts:
notveryinventive · 12/02/2012 22:06

re footballers wages. I honestly dont think a lot of the good ones like DB are doing it for the money, they do it for the love and passion they feel for the game. If they didnt have that passion then they wouldnt be anywhere nearly as good. They do the adverts and sponsors for the money dont they? Thats my opinion anyway which will obviously differ from others.

Re the Beckhams, Im a little bit Envy at their vast fortune, but I dont think there's any need to mock 2 people who from what I can see are good people. They've done nothing wrong and have earned every penny IMHO.

Before I discovered MN I was on a different forum and saw a thread where someone wanted to send a letter to DB and needed his address. It had to be their home address and not his people. Wonder if they ever found it out Hmm

DamnBamboo · 12/02/2012 22:08

The use of the word talentless here is completely incorrect.

Nobody said they are the most talented at what they do, or that they deserve to be paid as much as they do (yes she has a job, she's self-employed!) but they are both good at what they do.

And yes, Brits do love to insult people and are jealous of what other people have got. It's a national obsession to insult somebody who has more than you and shake your head at them because they don't know what it's really like. More people should aspire to do as well as them and not criticise them because they have done so.
