She still auditioned along with others for the Spice Girls and got though on merit. More for looks than singing talent but still.. No leg up there, and it's an incredibly difficult industry to succeed at.

BrightnessFalls · 14/02/2012 00:22

Ive just come back to this and, I still want to know what the OP classes as a "proper job"

BrandyAlexander · 14/02/2012 05:49

I always tend to think that people who can't appreciate the talent/business accumen of the Beckhams are probably lacking in both departments themselves.

DB is a supremely talented footballer who has been doing his job for 23 years. I am fairly sure that Sir Alex didn't sign him at 14 because he looked pretty. Also given how ruthless he is with his selection policy, one would have to be utterly delusional to think DB was a first choice name in 1999 Treble winning team because Sir Alex needed to make up the numbers. Or that Real Madrid needed the same.

As for VB, well I am guessing that the British Fashion Council (ie people who know what they are talking about) don't give out the designer of the year award to just anyone. I am guessing that she has the same level of input as that twat largefield does at Chanel or Alexander McQueen did at his label before he died. I mention McQueen simply because I know zero about fashion but they still managed to finish the collection he was working on when he died. Ie it seems that at all these labels, someone has the vision and then its a team effort to turn it into reality.

I admire VB's business accumen - she's smart, forward thinking and brave. I thought this when I thought she was an entertainer with zero talent who did an awesome job of building Brand Beckham and think she's doing a great job with her label. It's not easy to run a business.

BrightnessFalls · 14/02/2012 12:46

I agree completely.

ImperialBlether · 14/02/2012 18:37

Oh and she's not using her husband's money to build up her career (how bloody patronising can you get?) - she has backers and has not used her own (or DB's) money at all.

ThatVikRinA22 · 14/02/2012 18:45

I was quoting david beckham himself.
the audience laughed at what he said.
so did i. Obviously no mumsnetters in the audience of Jonathon Ross that night then.

havent read the 5 or so pages since yesterday - but yes i completely agree. i am just lacking in talent, im a bitter, jealous, and wizened old hag, and anyone who doesnt think the Beckhams are the second coming should be taken out and shot.or something like that.
I agree absolutely that i am a bitch, very fucking thick and (my personal fave) a bampot. Im sure ive missed a few insults since i stopped actually reading.
Cant actually manage to nip back on here tonight or tomorrow, very bad day, - cant be arsed to explain why, but wont get back on today/tomorrow but what ever my opinion makes me (bitter, jealous, twisted, thick, bampotted or all of the above) im afraid ive not changed it. Im nothing if not consistent. Ive never actually put any thought into my opinion of the Beckhams up until i watched J Ross, ive never felt jealous to my knowledge of anyone, i dont think im particularly bitter, not sure if im mensa material but never particularly felt i was 'thicker' than anyone else, my talents are fairly well hidden but i think they are in there somewhere! I just obviously felt the same as the JR audience on that night.

Perhaps we could just agree to disagree. or if you like you can just carry on, but i am, as the Dragons say, out.

I think David was saying it to get a laugh, which he did. I doubt the audience that night sat down and starting analysing and pulling the Beckhams to pieces afterwards.

Impsandelves · 15/02/2012 00:40

They may be overpaid but they are still proper jobs! Hats off to VB, I don't think her collection is outstanding but she has 4 children and managed a very successful career change.

yellowraincoat · 15/02/2012 15:35

See I watched that interview too and I didn't get that the audience were laughing in a nasty way, but that "proper job" is a bit of a funny phrase to use.

Just goes to show that we all see what we want to see.

abbscrosswoman · 15/02/2012 17:29

I often find myself smiling wryly at the people who comment that DB (and/or VB) are paid way too much.

I doubt very much that he has held any of his employers to any kind of ransome. I would guess that his payments are a reflection of the amounts paid by football fans (via tickets or SKY TV etc) to watch him play.Football fans such as my DH...........and I don't believe he feels any sense of coercion when he freely parts with his money.

I also doubt that DB has been able to exert any undue pressure on the companies that pay him to use his name and image to help sell their products.

Products bought by huge numbers of people that do not feel any sense of coercion when they part with their money.

Ditto VB.....................

I did wonder that myself. Having not seen it I couldn't really say but I did wonder if it was really how the OP said it was.

BrightnessFalls · 16/02/2012 19:06

He just said it to get a giggle. There was no emphasis on the word "proper" and everyone smile. Which is what was expected Smile It was light hearted I dont even know what the issue was.

sozzledchops · 16/02/2012 20:08

op has been very bitchy with her smirking at DB's very public alleged unfaithfulness and her smugness in that she knows her husband has never been unfaithful. Sorry, that's just downright nasty.

BrightnessFalls · 17/02/2012 10:29

I think its the word smirked that came accross as being catty.
