Names like Gemma82 or yummymummy1.

There's so much choice. Obviously I'm a sucker for a bad pun. But I love the variety of names on here - great song lyrics, obscure references that I feel compelled to go off and google (and never google again in the case of dragon butter), bizarre word combinations and so on.

There are some notable exceptions but normally I make an assumption that if a poster can't think of an interesting name then they won't have anything interesting to say.

Well, I'm not clever enough for the puns. I guess that makes me unworthy of being listened to...

You have a cat called bear? That passes the arbitrary test.

Hoto · 31/08/2011 09:11

I used to. They're 'newbie' names, IYKWIM, and I've got a soft spot for newbies these days. They're not all grizzled and grumpy and in-joke-spouting. I'm getting tired of all that shit. Of course, as soon as one of them "huns" at me they are persona non grata...

lovecorrie · 31/08/2011 09:11

I would say that this isn't a very nice post. My name isn't very original, but it certainly doesn't mean I'm bland or uninteresting, and I have problems on occasions that I would like genuine help with, blimey if I thought: 'shit, best change my name to something witty and 'eye catching to get the attention of witty and eyecatching people before i post', I'd never bloody post! Seems very unreasonable and totally unfair to me.

MissPenteuth · 31/08/2011 09:11

I never make assumptions based on people's names. Some names stand out and others are more easily forgotten, but I either read every post or skim a whole thread, I don't pick and choose which posts to read based on the posters name.

I know what you mean about yummymummy117 etc; you really couldn't think of a name that 116 other posters don't already have? It's not easy to think of a 'good' name on the spot though. Sometimes a 'bland' name is all you can think of to begin with, then you can namechange when inspiration strikes later.

stripeybump · 31/08/2011 09:12

I namechange frequently and go for fairly random things I like the sound of. I think this is the fluffiest name I've had on here and I do think people respond to me differently because of it - so it's not just you!

FWIW I just like the word 'stripey' when it has an 'e' in it Smile

Hoto · 31/08/2011 09:12

I've also found that users with the "aggro" names are usually little fluffy ticklebiscuits underneath so you never can tell.

MardyBra · 31/08/2011 09:12

Oh dear I'm talking about really bland hunny names FFS. You lot arent quite bland enough.

OP posts:
FrameyMcFrame · 31/08/2011 09:13

I don't look at names when I read MN, if someone says something terribly witty or obviously controversial I will look up at the name but otherwise I'm just reading the thread.

WiiUnfit · 31/08/2011 09:13

I had a 'newbie name' when I first joined until I realised MN was more of a pun-related name place got jealous of everyone's witty names.

Do I pass OP?

Framey, I'm with you, I read posts then look at the names.

I had a fluffier name when I started on MN.

I got ignored a lot.

OP posts:
NorksAkimbo · 31/08/2011 09:15

thanks, filibear ...I'm not very quick witted, so I'm fairly impressed that it's mine! :)

StuckUpTheFarawayTree · 31/08/2011 09:15

I don't do this. I read a post if it's either of interest to me, or I feel I can help.

What I do admit to though, is a recent name change, from one I've had for 6 years and frequently been ignored when asking for help!

nenevomito · 31/08/2011 09:15

I see what you mean about the names and numbers as I can pretty much guarantee the post that is going to follow.

Having said that, I'm not that arsed about someone having a clever nn, although I do enjoy it when I see a good pun even if it takes many months before I get it like OhtheHugeManatee

YY Hoto, I'm much more likely to disregard a post if the poster uses textspeak or punctuates sentences with 'lol'. And I might not ignore a 'hun'er, but I will almost certainly make assumptions about them Grin
