Personally she is too old, she needs to be becoming more independant. I always find it weird that someone would breastfeed a walking child.

Well I would take my husband's opinion into account when it comes to how his child is fed.

But I wouldn't take my Fathers.

I think that once you are pregnant you owe it to the unborn child to stop breastfeeding.

A two year old doesn't need to breastfeed. It's a habit and once which eventually she will lose. You can encourage this or not.

I'm of the opinion that a mother who feeds a child who is long past babyhood does it as much for herself as for the child, but that's got me shrieked at before now.

nice yes i do, 2 year old has one feed a day, 1 year old has a few.... my midwife knows and is very supportive and my hv knows aswell as it was recorded at her 2 year check in the box that asks if they still have bm (as recommended by the world health organisation) obviously this is the 2 pregnancy i have bf through, as dd bf through ds pregnancy... he was born at 41 weeks weighing 9lb 4 oz so i dont think it did him any harm?

If my fil had said that to me I'd be very tempted to put expressed breastmilk in his tea (although I wouldn't be quite brave enough to do it)

On a serious note, if he really objected to something I was doing, Id think it over carefully, but he would never tell me not to do something he knew mattered to me. I try to think of the best thing for all of us when I make a decision, he knows that, and tries to support me with the decision.

I think thats what you are asking about rather than the bf issue isnt it? FIL may come from a different generation remember.

How your children are fed is a matter for you and your husband only. Does your fil expect your dh to agree with him. As long as you are both happy then ignore ignore ignore. :)

If it was your husband expressing a view then I think it would be good to engage and debate. Your father in law can go whistle though.

I find it weird that a child who is able to pick up a spoon and feed themselves would need to be breastfed, but thats my personal opinion, and I would respect a mother to do what she feels is right for her, as it is nobody elses business really..

Your husband should stop you from b/f? Hmm, I don't think so, do you? Of course he can express an opinion, but it's up to you - your breasts, after all.

EvenLess, there's nothing actually wrong with cow's milk for a two year old, unless you are allergic to dairy, of course.

If you think there is, at what age would you think a mother should stop breastfeeding? Should you wait until the child can ask to stop? Or write a note?

My FIL told DP - "this is ridiculous and has gone on long enough" and DD was only 2 weeks old!! (both PIL are very anti bf) my response - if you don't like how I parent, then don't be around when I parent! They took the hint, have had no further advice. YANBU
