To dislike the culture of alcohol worship on MN?

I know it's all lighthearted....but I find it icky. Not people saying ..have a to cheer someone up so much...but all the "Just waiting till' wine o clock statements get to me.
I think it's because a close relative is an acoholic and I have seen the damage.

Alcohol is such a damaging thing...and I'm genuinely surprised (and yes...judgey) about how many parents seem to rely on it every night.

How do you know which parents rely on it and which ones just enjoy it?

I enjoy a drink when the kids are in bed...I always have done, but I certainly don't rely on it.

So I suppose a fag in the other hand is out of the question too then?

I understand because I too have "ishoos" with drinking. Mainly a nearlyXH who got very very aggressive with it and also before him and DS I used to drink a lot and didn't know when to stop. BUT I try to accept other people's casual wine drinking because I know not everyone has my problems with it, and nervous as it makes me I know not everyone becomes aggressive after only a glass or even at all.

Enjoying a glass of wine in the evening does not equate to NEEDING one.

I think for some people a small glass of something puts an end to their day as parents and starts their evening.

I don't drink anymore (since about '97).

I was talking to my Step- Mum about it,she told me I should start building up some tolerance to it and gave me hints on how to do so

My Step-Mum and Dad drink every evening,without fail and at least a couple of glasses of wine.

Right now I am in the US, alcohol features a lot less in life where I live.

It shocks me how many FB pages (in the UK) are with people holding up drinks for the shot!

Drinking is a big part of our culture here in Britain...but again there is a big difference in liking it and relying upon it.

I do get where you are coming from. I too enjoy a small glass of wine in the evening, but also have experience of knowing people for whom this becomes a need , and for much more than a small glass. I think plenty of people are not honest with themselves about it.

I'm not a huge drinker but found two bottles of stella cider in my local store that jumped into my basket, so when the kids are in bed I'll have one. Chin chin.

I'm sorry but just because some people get addicted to alcohol, doesn't make it wrong for others to eat it.

That's like saying there should be no unhealthy food because some people allow themselves to get fat on it.

Alchohol is not a damaging thing.

Just as cakes are not bad for you.

It is the amount that you consume of them and why.

Looking forward to something doesnt make you dependent or the habit bad.

I just know so many people who think it reasonable to knock off a bottle of wine in the evening ...every evening and call it a glass.

I see what it does. It's stealthy.

I'm not an alcoholic and I enjoy alcohol.

I use it for a purpose, I feel better after a drink, so I suppose you could say I rely on it to make me feel better for a couple of hours in the evening - every evening - and I don't feel guilty at all

I don't want to go a night without a glass ta, what other people get up to is their own affair.

Well I love my wine in the evening. I don't need it, but I enjoy it.

I understand what you mean- but people are very defensive about their alcohol use.
I know lots in real life who drink a bottle of wine a night (just for them) and appear to think this is safe and ignore the health consequences. Sometimes posters on here are encouraged to have that extra glass and just finish the bottle- I do find this odd.
However, each to their own, but it can be a fine line between social use and dependance for some.

I find it weird though how people are allwed to sniff at smokers and not at drinkers. My Mum smokes but doesn't drink so she cops al the stuff about how bad it is (which it is obviously) but my brother and his wife are merry every night...as are my PILS...they don't get any shit at all.

Alchol DOES do damage.

I think many people have forgotten what constitutes a need though.

Many people think they are just enjoying a glass or two,take that away and then see what happens perhaps?

Many are reliant and genuinely have no idea

I think the op raised a good question,one I have pondered about too.

YANBU. I don't get the attraction or problem with alcohol as such as I don't drink and come from a background where that is the norm. But it amazes me how much and often it comes up in conversations on forums, I mean any forum.
