To dislike the culture of alcohol worship on MN?

I know it's all lighthearted....but I find it icky. Not people saying ..have a Wine to cheer someone up so much...but all the "Just waiting till' wine o clock statements get to me.
I think it's because a close relative is an acoholic and I have seen the damage.

Alcohol is such a damaging thing...and I'm genuinely surprised (and yes...judgey) about how many parents seem to rely on it every night.

I agree. When I see people in Sainsburys, adding bottles of wine to their trolley, I can't help but think they are users of alcohol. In other words, I doubt most love the taste like, say, a glass of fresh orange juice ...I am sure that most put that wine in their trolley with the intention of receiving some kind of effect from it.

nicespam · 07/06/2011 18:14

well if you don't like alcohol or know someone with a problem with it you can't think all drinkers are similar and judge them on your moral grounding

life is dull enough as it is without being villified by wanting a drink now and again

TheMonster · 07/06/2011 18:15

I didn't want the wine emoticon on MN.

cannydoit · 07/06/2011 18:18

blimey op my ex was an alcoholic but i would never think to take issue over something like this i honestly think people spend their time thinking of things to get miffed about.

takeonboard · 07/06/2011 18:19

I don't belive this!
What has happened to MN, i despair of all this sanctimonious twaddle, am off for a ...............Wine Grin
cheers freaks!!

JamieAgain · 07/06/2011 18:20

It's a discussion. Much beloved of MN

Riveninside · 07/06/2011 18:21

I get oth sides as dad was an alcoholic. I dont drink but theres nothing wrong with a bit of an evening. Prefer choc myself.

yoshiLunk · 07/06/2011 18:23

Aaah!

bottoms up Wine

BornInAfrica · 07/06/2011 18:24

It's twaddle and that is exactly what it is!

Where has all this pearl clutching tongue tutting disapproval come from lately? Could it, do you think, be a direct result of too damned many years of Nanny State government.

I think everyone should just piss off and let others do whatever they want within the confines of the law.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 07/06/2011 18:24

I bloody love wine.

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/06/2011 18:24

So what's your solution OP? That no one drinks ever? Or if people do they shouldn't mention it?
And just because some people have alchohol problems, means any mner enjoying a drink must be an alchoholic?
I'm having wine tonight by the way.
Cheers Wine

AuntiePickleBottom · 07/06/2011 18:26

WTsweetF?

You have changed slightly in your posts since your OP, which stated you don't like the culture of alcohol worship on MN and state that some people rely on it every night.... soooo many things wrong here:

  1. How do you know anyone is relying on alcohol even on ONE night? Unless your computer lets you see into other people's homes you have literally no idea what anyone is doing. You only know what they are posting. And after the first "wine o'clock" post I have not seen anyone post as if drunk or post with how much they are drinking. It could be a small glass of wine at 7pm for all you know, and that's all.

  2. How do you get to "culture of alcohol worship" from a couple of "wine o'clock" threads a couple of times a week? What proportion of everyone who is an MN member posts on these threads?

  3. Even if everyone on MN is getting rat arsed every night of the week, its got fuck all to do with you.

  4. Your wider point on the perils of drinking may be a valid one. Some people drink to excess and damage themselves and their family. Some do not. Some people are so morbidly obese they can barely walk, but I'm not so I'll have a snickers, thanks.

I am not even going to answer whether I think you are being unreasonable. Its patently obvious what I think....

for chrissake's should we all be eating salad, sipping water and going to church every day of the week too?

TheFlyingOnion · 07/06/2011 18:30

SparklyCloud thanks for the giggle Smile. that's the funniest thing I've heard all day.

BTW I fucking hate pineapple juice, so I suppose you do too?

Riveninside · 07/06/2011 18:30

Not salad. E coli!

Al0uiseG · 07/06/2011 18:31

I didn't even wait for the evening! I had wine with lunch. Have a Biscuit they are full of transfats and sugar.

Bucharest · 07/06/2011 18:32

Ahhhh, but we know all about the effect alcohol has on you Alouise......you are a legend Grin

redflagsahoy · 07/06/2011 18:33

Ahhh where would we be without a glass or 2 or 3 for that matter of wine, I find absolutley nothing wrong with it, the only problem I have with alcohol is when it changes a persons behaviour for the worse and/or they become reliant upon it...but thats subjective. After a week at work I love going out on a Friday evening with DH for a few glasses or sitting in with a bottle of wine (or 2:) ) But to me thats ok, it really is my dowtime and I do really look forward to it, if I couldn't do it I'd be a bit upset because thats a scheduled thing we do each week. Does that make me reliant on it?

katvond · 07/06/2011 18:33

So does eating junk food, am I lecturing, nope.
I don't drink but I don't care if others do. I can't stand the taste of it
I don't smoke if others Want to it's up to them
It's there fucking life's OP not yours now stop getting your knickers in a twist

TheFlyingOnion · 07/06/2011 18:33

Completely brilliant post!

pink4ever · 07/06/2011 18:37

Well I am counting down the minutes till dh and eldest go to football so I can open a bottle of vinoGrin. I rarely drink during the week but always have a bottle in just in case I feel like it. Its my little treat after a stressful day. Tbh am far more concerned about the amount of choc I eatBlush.

stripeywoollenhat · 07/06/2011 18:38
