Ds is autistic in a mainstream school, and has 2 full time support teachers. On friday he cae home with the class prize, and I had no idea he was getting it, and he was upset I wasnt in assembly to see him. He has a "hoe school" book which is basically a comunication book between school and home, and I was a bit upset it wasnt mentioned in there so I wrote a small comment in the book thaat maybe if there is a next tie it could be mentioned in this book. Got said book back home tonight with a snotty message in it saying the communication book wa not for this purpose and it would be far too time consuming to write things like this in it. I went straight back to school to have a word with the class teacher who had written this, and was basically told to bugger off in a more polite way!!! She aid there is no time to write these things in the book (I pointed out that if between 3 teachers they find it too time consuming to write a sentence then I a a bit worried). I pointed out that the book doesnt come home evry night a it is meant to, and she said "well it doesnt come back from home all the tie either" to which I pointed out I am pregnant and VERY forgetful, and they are being paid to write in this book and send it home. She was having none of it, and tried to talk right over me, then in the end just said "right" and walked away.
Am I being paranoid or was she being a cow??? She maybe doesnt like me to start with as I found my son almost out of the school gate as the support teacher was nowhere to be seen and his class teacher just let him go, and I complained.

I think your comment about them being paid to write in it was very rude actually.

Why didn't your ds tell you he was getting the prize before the assembly?

They are paid to write it in, rude or not!! They get 2 extra teachers funded specifically for my son and that is specifically their job!
Pregnancy is not an illness no, but then again surely if I forget once or twice then they can see why? No the CLASS TEACHER doesnt just have my on to teach, the 2 SUPPORT TEACHERS only have my son to teach, and they cant write in a book?? And he didnt tell me as he is autistic. euphemia when he was in the class below it was always reported, thats probably why I was a bit mystified as to why this new teacher didnt bother.

And altinkum although preg is not an excuse for forgetting too bring in his book once or twice, wonder what their excuse is for forgtting to send it back home?

I think you are over reacting big time

Unless it was his class assembly and all the parents were going then you had no need to be told about it.

If I had to go to the school every time DS1 (sn) or DS2 got an achievers award I would be there more then some of the teachers.

I also think you were very rude to the teacher and should apologize

HuwEdwards · 08/02/2011 16:58

betty, you seem like a very angry lady. It was a mix up, but you sound like you were very rude. Move on.

bettywobble · 08/02/2011 16:59

hahahahaha obviously not the child of an autistic child then ladies!!

WimpleOfTheBallet · 08/02/2011 16:59

YABU. The books are not for that purpose..they're a dialogue between you and the teaccher about his work/reading/social issues

What did you want? "Well done Mum"?

Ormirian · 08/02/2011 17:01

You do sound a little wound up and aggressive.

bettywobble · 08/02/2011 17:01

well done mum for what exactly? And no, they are a communiation between hmoe and school about everything. His last teacher managed it.

lessnarkypuffin · 08/02/2011 17:01

What is the book for? What kind of things do get put in there? 'Extra teachers', do you mean TAs?

bettywobble · 08/02/2011 17:01

why am I aggresive?

OP posts:
ValiumSandwichTime · 08/02/2011 17:02

I have a communication book for my son too and there would be no suggestion EVER that something was too much trouble to write in the book. Anything relevant, anything of interest, any chat, any exchange of info.....

It sounds like mainstream teachers who don't want to be dealing with a child on the spectrum. I'd be a bit worried that they weren't exactly accommodating..

bettywobble · 08/02/2011 17:02

He has two specific teaching assistants and a class teacher.

I think you were rude to the teachers. They have lots of children to teach. It is an over reaction on your part, although I am sure you were disappointed not to have seen him get his prize! Maybe you can do something special together so he knows how proud you are :)

bettywobble · 08/02/2011 17:03

valiumsandwichtime...thank you! A person who understands!!

Ormirian · 08/02/2011 17:03

Well, calling her a bitch and a cow and telling her she was paid to write in the book Hmm

bettywobble · 08/02/2011 17:04

Lmao @ people who don't fully read the whole thread!!! (leverkusen)

OP posts:
bettywobble · 08/02/2011 17:04

I hardly called her that to her face LOL!! And I pointed out it the job of the TA s to do that. Which she fully knew and hence her attitude.

BeeBox · 08/02/2011 17:05

I can see why you are pissed off. It is pathetic that between the class teacher and two support teachers nobody could be bothered to write a quick note informing you. It ^does& matter, and yes, it matters more because your son has ASD and his achievements need to be celebrated.

Drop it on this occasion, I'd say. No point starting a war. But i would arrange a meeting to calmly discuss the home school book - what its purpose is and how often it should be filled out. Our so (also ASD) has his book filled out on a Friday, with any news from the last week or about the forthcoming week.

PinkIceQueen · 08/02/2011 17:05

Can you clarify op, the 2 full time support teachers, they both work full time, or job share so that your son has just 1 person full time?

The class teacher may not have told the support staff that your son was getting a prize, it would not be her job to write in his book.

Classrooms are very busy places at the best of times and staff that are meant to be 1 to 1 with a child are rarely lucky enough to actually work only with that child even when funded to do so.

ie., Your son is happily amusing himself with Lego, another child wets themselves, no other staff available, your childs support worker cannot just leave a distressed child wet, they would have to deal with it.

I think you are being a little harsh.

Having said the above, I would also be disappointed if I had missed my child get a prize (as has happened on many occasions). So, YANBU for feeling disappointed. However, your attitude to the teacher was UR, a bit, in my opinion.

Leverkusen · 08/02/2011 17:06

Don't get your knickers in a twist my love. I was talking about the teacher, not the TAs, because they are not teachers.

ValiumSandwichTime · 08/02/2011 17:06

Bettywobble, I understand your anger and I think you have a right to question their attitude towards the book and what can be written in it,.... but catch more bees with honey and all that.

You're right, the school has TAs which benefit the entire rest of the class because of you son's education report, and yet they can't write two lines in a book.....

I'd be Hmm too. I haven't come across this yet though, thankfully.

People who've mocked you don't know how stressful it is to worry about a child on the spectrum at mainstream school.

bettywobble · 08/02/2011 17:07

beebox thank you :)
I will just forget about it, unless it happen again I guess, then I will make an appointment to see the head.
Thanks :)
