Sutton High Street

In thinking that the people who inflicted the new and 'improved' Sutton High Street' on us should all be sacked?

I actually think it's a shame we can't tie them to the benches,(which they obviously rescued from a skip/dump) and give them all a sound public flogging!

Not only did someone design this sorry-looking High Street but lots of other twats actually thought it was good enough to inflict on us!

So, what have we got for our millions? A truly shitty High Street which I can't bear to see so I have stopped shopping in Sutton. We've got so many different types of paving on the ground that it looks like someone's started doing it and changed their minds several times, the above-mentioned benches and a stupid bloody 'farm'.

It looks so horrendous that it truly does have to be seen to be believed. It's a complete bloody embarrassment. (When we have visitors we make sure they don't go within a mile of it) and it really is taking the fucking piss out of Sutton's Council-tax payers. I'm so angry about it, even now, months/years? later. Why would anyone want to shop in Sutton and have the sight of the High Street inflicted on them when they can't even stop for a rest on a decent bloody bench. Epsom, Kingston, Croydon are all 'state-of-the-art' compared to this fucking tip of a High Street.

Ooh. I used to live in Sutton.

What have they done to it? It used to be a regular high street with St Nicks centre about halfway down, then the dogey end down the bottom. What's it like now?

jugglers · 15/01/2011 18:58

Horrid place, has been for about 25 years.

Nasty shops, nasty people.

Horrible, nasty, skanky yuck!

and now even worse!

TattyDevine · 15/01/2011 19:00

So what have they done to it?

mangoandlime · 15/01/2011 19:01

Sutton has always been rank.

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 19:03

Jugglers - You're spot on. I just want to cry; I live in Cheam thank goodness but I now have no choice but to go further afield to shop.Sad

you envy Croydon???

Croydon is horrible. TRied to do my xmas shopping there Never again.

It was like a scene from 'Dawn of the Dead'. Hordes of dead-eyed zombies milling around a giant shopping mall, rage, violence, cannibalism...

I managed an hour before running home, barricading the doors and breaking out the shotguns

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 19:26

CognitiveDissident I think Croydon's shit too..... but Sutton is far shittier..... you obviously haven't seen it or you wouldn't be so surprised that I prefer Croydon!

I used to live in Sutton too, but YABU to think Croydon is nicer Hmm

We used to drink in O'Neills, and did a few open mic nights. A place is what you make of it, Sutton is not exactly a shit heap, it has some lovely streets with big old houses.

But then i have lots of happy memories of Sutton, mainly due to the friends i made there (not 'shitty' people fwiw!)

CognitiveDissident · 15/01/2011 19:32

I'm intrigued now, contemplating a visit to Sutton tomorrow.

Do I need to take special precautions? Riot gear? Gin?

InterruptingCow · 15/01/2011 19:37

Blimey, used to live in Croydon so Sutton must be awful if you think Croydon is better. Mind you, I used to quite like the Whitgift Centre. Left 10 years ago to live in the sticks and still haven't quite got used to the fact that I have to drive 45 minutes to get to a decent M&S!

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 19:37

Summerbird73 you say ....used to..... you obviously haven't seen it.... come have a look, then tell me your honest opinion. I'm asking opinions specifically about Sutton High Street and all the twats involved in it's 'improvement'.

charliesmommy · 15/01/2011 19:38

I would say Croydon is a lot worse than Sutton.

Its actually cheaper now to park in Kingston than Sutton, and Kingston is much much nicer.

Epsom isnt too bad but there are not enough decent shops.. it was packed there this afternoon though.

As for Suttons "improvements".. I agree, they are dreadful. I am wondering how long before the council are being sued when all the little darlings slip off the tree trunks onto the concrete.. (I mean ffs.. its like a rred rag to a bull putting logs in the place of benches...) not to mention those benches will then be filthy from the muddy feet that are walking about on them..

AmazingDisgrace · 15/01/2011 19:39

I used to live there too, when O'Neills was still the Green Man...went back for the first time in years recently, there's a zillion pubs now where their used to be shops.

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 19:40

CognitiveDissident If you come and have a look I guarantee you'll agree with me. So far none of the posters have actually seen it.

Me and my friends refer to sutton and croydon only in joking form. As in the descending scale of shitness

  1. Hell
  2. croydon
  3. sutton
charliesmommy · 15/01/2011 19:43

So long as you like Primark and pound shops, you will love it...

Deaddei · 15/01/2011 19:50

OH it is an appalling place.
When ds sat the Sutton test, I wandered round and finally sought refuge in All Bar One.
However I will throw Mitcham in as another hell hole

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 19:50

Oldbagwantsnewbag LOL! Please do go, and please do make sure you report back.Grin

OP posts:
charliesmommy · 15/01/2011 19:52

Agreed, Mitcham is a dump too...

Wimbledon isnt too bad though.

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 19:53

Deaddei FINALLY! Someone who has actually experienced it. I've lived in some terrible places, years ago, but absolutely NOTHING compares to the monstrosity that is Sutton High Street.

OP posts:
GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 19:56

Charliesmommy I agree - Primark, poundshops and loads of pubs - AND ADD TO THAT THE NEW 'IMPROVED HIGH STREET'.

OP posts:
mangoandlime · 15/01/2011 19:57

And dint forget Morden (shudder).

If we were passing through I used to beg to stop at a shop called 'Sam Fashions'. They did fabulous rara skirts, skirts with big pockets and skirts with little pleats around the bottom. Early 80s high fashion !

charliesmommy · 15/01/2011 19:57

Gorgeous.. I posted my views on the tree trunks too.. up there ^ lol!!!

mangoandlime · 15/01/2011 19:58

My gran went to Sutton today - perhaps I should ask her for a review.
