On a very snowy underused road.

slightly downhill need to reverse so can drive out of cul-se-fecking-sac.

Any advice?

JaneS · 21/12/2010 17:27

Ok, why can't you reverse? Do you stall, or spin?

You need the car mats or anything else you can find, under the back wheels.

If you are stalling when you try to reverse, you need a little light revving.

If you are spinning, go very slow on the clutch - it is the only way, sorry.

shinyshoesandglitterypoos · 21/12/2010 17:27

Good progress, well done. Where are you?

Triggles · 21/12/2010 17:28

2 thoughts...

  1. are you in an area where a local MN'er could help you?
  2. if your vehicle is in any way where it might impede traffic, call police, tell them that your vehicle is stuck and blocking traffic in a hazardous way and ask if they have anyone in the area (traffic warden, pcso, anyone) that could pop by to assist you? (used to work for police, and in this type of situation we would have made every effort to get someone to assist if we had anyone available)
JaneS · 21/12/2010 17:28

Oh, well done! Progress!

Ok, you can start the car in any gear, and the higher the gear the more traction you'll get. 2nd or even 3rd if you are very gentle and slow on the clutch.

PhishFoodAddiction · 21/12/2010 17:28

Go and knock on someone's door, if you explain then they might give you a hand.

Do you have any newspapers in your car? You can use those for traction. Or the car mats as already mentioned.

I don't drive but would be having a complete meltdown in your situation! Hope you get moving soon.

JaneS · 21/12/2010 17:29

(sorry, my post at 17.27 was a cross-post obviously - ignore)

LittleMissHoHoHoFit · 21/12/2010 17:30

You need to go back down hill, this is getting you nowhere.

scurryfunge · 21/12/2010 17:32

You need to get off your blinking phone and concentrate on driving or get out and ask for help.

TheMonster · 21/12/2010 17:33
wineonafridaynight · 21/12/2010 17:33

Ok you have turned the car round and are facing up hill. Can you move at all? Also does your car have traction control? If so - turn it off for now.

FiveFeetTwo · 21/12/2010 17:35

Please go and ask for help. Your engine will overheat if you carry on getting nowhere.

giraffesCantDanceOnAllThisSnow · 21/12/2010 17:36

where are you trying to get? up or down?

Right.

Stop trying to solve this on your own / online. It's not working.

Go to the nearest house and demand help.

If that fails, call the police as suggested earlier. NOT 999.

End of.

MrsTumbles · 21/12/2010 17:38

Eat the biscuits.

Penelope has given you some good advice (but VivaLeBeaver DH's advice would look cool!) If you have nothing to dig with remember that any sort of movement is good. So even if you can only reverse a little bit keep putting full lock on before moving foward/backward. And as loads of people have said use the clutch as much as you can, keep any revs looooooooooooooooow. If you wheel spin, you'll just make the situation worse.

Also have to second the advice to knock on a door and act female cry (eat the biscuits first, or you'll feel obliged to share Xmas Wink)

NorthernLurker · 21/12/2010 17:40

Well done on some movement. This is really hard and you're doing fine. I agree you need a second pair of eyes and/or hands here.

fibernachi · 21/12/2010 17:42

The OP is in too much of a state for feats of clutch control / carpets / other shit.

This is potentially a dangerous situation. There are DC in the car.

Practical RL help is required. Evey failed attempt to move the car is making the road surface more slippery and impossible.

TBH I'm shocked and horrified that none of the people who live there have come out and offered to help.

Triggles · 21/12/2010 17:45

OP - seriously, you are in a hazardous situation with the car, on what I assume is a residential road, with children in the car, in the dark. The police would most likely be happy (or if not happy, at least willing LOL) to come out and assist in order to prevent an accident - such as another car coming along and not seeing you in time to stop. Please call them and at least ask!

scurryfunge · 21/12/2010 17:48

Suggest we do not engage with OP further -let her concentrate on getting out of there. I am sure she will update late when she is out of this mess. At the moment we are encouraging her to focus her efforts on this thread rather than practical help.

Triggles · 21/12/2010 17:51

Isn't that a bit akin to telling people not to proffer any advice? If she's busy, she won't be reading it and it's not an issue. We are not encouraging (or forcing her for that matter) to "focus her efforts on this thread" - people are simply offering advice - some of which HAS been for her to ask someone for help there on the scene.

TheFoosa · 21/12/2010 17:52

she started it [sulk]

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 21/12/2010 17:53

if you were outside my huose I would help you

please go and knock on doors

Lougle · 21/12/2010 17:54

Well done, CTR. You will get there.

Unrulysanta · 21/12/2010 17:59

I can't drive and am therefore no use but I am sending you very encouraging thoughts. :)

ChristmasTrolleyRage · 21/12/2010 18:04

Right I am at a petrol station waiting for adrenalin to subside.

made very slow progess with 6 car mats and moving forward 4ish inches at a time. Rather monolithstongehenge-like with mats instead of cylindrical wooden poles! Grin

After about 20 mins of a mom came home amd dragged Zac Efron and his 2 mates out the house to help!

One kindly offered the fact that they'd pushed another car out the road a few days before. "Oh, yeah, what kind of car?"

"A peugeot 205" he gulped, looking at my Galaxy.

Another kind stranger joined in after I suggest the mom should get behind the wheel as she waa slight and I am fat not.

So, I'm free, and now have a mystery to solve: why was there a john lewis paring knife hiding under the rear mats in my car?

Doesn't belong to the Chaoses. Confused

Anyway every cloud has a silver lining - I don't think I'll be asked to play I Spy again in a hurry.

Thanks all you lot for your help - your advice was invaluable - it was the mats that did it.

Smile
