Judging by your mention of the M42 you are somewhere near me - our road is a nightmare (lost count of number of cars being pushed out) and not used our cars since Saturday. however only a short distance away at my parents conditions much better. So to Penelope - maybe the OP didn't know that side road would be such an problem until she was well and truly stuck - no need to be so critical. My parents think I am exaggerating about our road conditions - sadly not and Met office issued another severe weather warning and maybe 25cms overnight

OFFS Penelope, how many times...

The first rule of RoadCraft is that you don't talk about RoadCraft

roadcraft does sound like a badge from the brownies

pooka · 21/12/2010 20:00

I left brownies before I got my road craft badge. Such a shame.

Christ on a bike. Those of you who haven't driven in the Arctic - step away from your vehicles!

Penelope, I've trained with the IAM and I've got a copy of roadcraft lurking in a cupboard. Neither taught me about driving in snow. I learned to drive in snow because it snows a lot here and I do a job which can't stop in bad weather so I had to get on with it - much like the majority of the UK, including the OP, who was doing her best. Unhelpful and sanctimonious post.

PenelopeTitsDropped · 21/12/2010 20:16

I've made very many mistakes.

I gave up my motorbike in the September.

I bought a car.

In March of the following year,I "had a car crash".

It was snowing; and I knew they were going to hit me (in my car).
I knew because they hadn't respected breaking distances; (behind me) it was a road rage incident; they'd chucked lager cans at (my) car on a dual carriage way.

Long story short; they hit me at 60 mph. I was cut out etc. etc. Cut out of the crash etc.

I spent 27 months in rehab learning how to walk etc.

I am still disabled; it has taken me a long time to walk; I am always in a lot of pain.

Do me a favour Buzz, Love. Fuck Off.

I require people that get in a car, in the snow; to have some fucking idea as to how to DRIVE IN SNOW.

I

scurryfunge · 21/12/2010 20:21

Penny, sounds like you have had a bad experience but it sounds like the buffoon who hit you drove like that anyway, regardless of whether it was snowing or not. Please do not transfer your experiences in order to judge of others.

southeastastra · 21/12/2010 20:24

bloody hell that was an awful accident :(

but sorry agree with scurry you can't equate the two experiences. life would eventually halt if we didn't go out in cars in the snow - experience is sadly the only way to learn in the uk, we could also really get angry about the lack of gritting

Unrulysanta · 21/12/2010 20:28

I don't think braking distances were the op's issue.

juneybean · 21/12/2010 20:33

Kinell the OP was stationary ffs

PenelopeTitsDropped · 21/12/2010 20:38

I have got a badge. It was entitled

"I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT DRIVING YOU BASTARDS"

My Dh knows everything about this badge.

He has ditched me on the side of the road when I start screaming (earlier days) when he didn't meet my standards.

I'm twitchy in these driving conditions.

My Husband wouldn't go out today.

But I had To.(Professional/Work Obligations; and a Funeral of a Dead Client as an aside).

It was entirely shit. It took hours; far more than intended; mainly because of the bastards that don't know how to fucking drive; and don't have the badge.

Stuck cars and shit for brains.

scurryfunge · 21/12/2010 20:41

Woah, Penny - you need to calm down.

southeastastra · 21/12/2010 20:43

you have to just do it to learn though don't you. reading how to do it is helpful i suppose but you can't compare really

i have the 'what to do in an emergency' book from reader's digest. i now what to do it my windscreen wipers fail, and how to stop when brakes fail.

it also has 'what to do when you get swept away with a crowd' and 'how to react if you get approached by a drunk' it's a classic

FFS Penelope I think you are getting a tad upset. I left the house this morning to clear roads, I live off a main road. I was taking DD to CM who lives in a cul-de-sac in a housing developement, her cul-de-sac was covered in compacted snow. I do have experience driving in snow so knew what to do, others may not have done but once in the road it would have been too late. Maybe OP was in this situation, I don't think ranting at her is at all helpful.

VictoriasLittleKnownSecret · 21/12/2010 21:27

Well this was a funny informative thread...

Penelope I appreciate that you are confusing the OP with some lager louts with road rage who were driving in snow but the two situations are unrelated

OP-funny funny thread and well done you

southeastastra · 21/12/2010 21:29

you have to grip your hands together and hold them to your ribs then you get push your arms out to create space to breathe

bethylou · 21/12/2010 21:42

I got stuck today too with DS1 asking, "Mummy, why are we going backwards down the road?" Er, because I haven't heard of roadcraft and can't make the damn vehicle go forward!! Managed to turn in a downward sloping turning in the end after reversing about quarter of a mile round our sleepy village!! We are also near the M42/M40 so maybe there's a theme here?

Glad you got out OP!
