You are probably right in that you may never get over it but you will learn to deal with it. EMDR is a great therapy for PTSD if you haven't tried it.

Can we remember a little Christmas spirit here?

Penelope - sounds absolute pants what you've been through and wish you well on your recovery.

After that sort of tragedy, I can imagine many people wanting to shout from the rooftops,

"Get some experience; be prepared; don't take risks; don't be so stupid," etc, etc, perhaps rather irrationally and irritably.

I'm sure you mean well.

OP.... is this you? Grin

ChristmasTrolleyRage · 21/12/2010 23:14

Hiya. Smile

Right I am back safe.

Some background points for those who thought I was beresk to go out today.

I live North of Birmingham on an A road. All main roads are clear and safe round here.

I needed to go to John Lewis to buy a Babyliss Big Hair some essentials and the DCs wanted a crepe in the cafe.

My Aunt and Uncle live about 10 miles past JL and so I decided to drop their Christams pressies to them (instead of waiting till New Year's Day when we will meet up), and take a big bucnh of flowers to my Aunt who came out of hospital yesterday following a hysterectomy last week.

I checked the weather forecast, snow due round Birmingham Airport 3am, so decided to risk the trip.

In my car was - biscuits, several bottles of water, a travel mug of hot squash, 3 picnic blankets (in the boot), torches, DVD player Grin, carp phone, first aid box, hats, gloves, wellies (and shoes to change into), and a potty.

After speaking to DH this evening - he works 150 miles away and is uncontactable in the day - I found out there was half a bag of rock salt in the boot that he had kindly put in first thing Monday morning before he set off for work, but had forgotten to tell me about. If I had to go in the boot to fetch any of the above items I would have seen the grit. (He said he had meant to put at shovel in but had got distracted.

I have been on a skid school cousre to help me understand driving on ice, but as the car wasn't bleeding moving I did not need any of those skills today.

So, I really think the only thing you can actually call me Fucking Stupid for is actually drving 200yards down a cul-de-sac (which had tyres tracks on it - so obviously was usable) and not judging the gradient as adequate for my car to cope with. So be it, I'm fucking stupid then - I'll see if I can book myself on a toadcraft course.

I'm sorry to hear that you had an absolutely horrendous accident, and I sympathise, but we all make mistakes and I really think that the circumstances today would have caught out any driver in a massive non-4 wheel drive.

I wish you a full recovery and hopefully a pain free Christams Penelope.

Scurry. I reckon if you've been slammed by a drunk driver at 60 mph (when you're stationary)and left disabled; then caution is natural.

I was diagnosed with "PTSD". But I don't actually have "it".
I got hit by a car; it hurt; I don't want it to happen again. I am hypervigilant about it.

That isn't a syndrome or a condition.

It's Common Sense. I've been hit via a car crash once (and survived); am very unlikely to survive a second.
So yes I am shit scared of any sort of car crash again; it's unlikely that I would survive. It isn't a condition; it's self preservation.

We diagnose the "Human Condition" frequently; and give it a nomenclature and a title etc etc. I am scared of travel because it may kill me.

Now the psychiatrists that interviewed me after the car crash said "PTSD".. But I call it common sense. If I crash in a car again; the seat belt is likely to kill me.

No amount of names can change that. This is why Mr Tits Dropped is doing his motorbike test (he hates motor bikes); and he is also doing his advanced Motorist.

gaelicsheep · 21/12/2010 23:17

Penelope's post was a little harsh, but her point was sound. OP, I hope you have learned something today. I'm very very glad you got out safely, but fgs next time pack a shovel! And if you're not confident in snow, don't drive in it unless you absolutely have to.

gaelicsheep · 21/12/2010 23:19

X posted. OK, it sounds like you were prepared. We've all made mistakes and forgotten things. Once again, I'm glad you're all safe and sound.

ChristmasTrolleyRage · 21/12/2010 23:20

Yep, the shovel is already in the boot.

I have taken something away from today (besides the paring knife) - I will not drive on an incline in the snow again.

'If I crash in a car again; the seat belt is likely to kill me'

Bollocks.

As opposed to not wearing one?

stickersarecurrency · 21/12/2010 23:22

Did anyone else lol at "toadcraft"?

Just me then ...

ChristmasTrolleyRage · 21/12/2010 23:23

I'm having trouble readin my post - some is missing.

I'll relist it as I feel I need to justify my actions:

"In my car was - biscuits, several bottles of water, a travel mug of hot squash, 3 picnic blankets (in the boot), torches, DVD player, carp phone, first aid box, hats, gloves, wellis (and shoes to change into) and a potty."

scurryfunge · 21/12/2010 23:25

Penny, you have had a normal reaction to an abnormal event. PTSD is purely a collection of symptoms that mean you are having difficulty dealing with the incident. The odds of you not surviving a second accident are no different to your first. To dismiss what a psychiatrist say is risky.

Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

Imisssleeping · 21/12/2010 23:25

and a partridge in a pear tree

Imisssleeping · 21/12/2010 23:26

that was to add on to the op's list

PenelopeTitsDropped · 21/12/2010 23:27

Christmas Trolley. I assume you had crepes at John Lewis Solihull.

They're like rubber; but my DD loves them also.

Very glad to hear you're home safe and sound.

Never turn anywhere if the snow is white; only go on roads that look brown/pooey.

It's not just skidding you need to look at; it's starting and braking at junctions. Car parks over the Xmas holidays are good for this.

I think that posting in AIBU saying "Urgent" in this situation was both practical and very funny.

Kudos OP Xmas Smile

'If I crash in a car again; the seat belt is likely to kill me'

Bollocks.

My seat belt also saved me. Unfortunately; it also dislocated my clavicle at both ends. On crashing I assumed the "air craft crash position". I leant over the steering wheel and tucked my head in.

When I was then hit (at 60mph) when I was stationary; with both handbrake and foot brake on;....

I made an error. So yes. If I have another car crash; and it moves my clavicle; it can sever a major artery; and it's likely to be fatal.

If I hadn't have been wearing a seat belt. I'd have been dead first time.

backwardpossom · 21/12/2010 23:40

Well that's a load of carp.

Penelope, I'm sorry for your accident and I hope you get back to some sort of normality soon, but you're coming across as a complete arse here. I'm sure you mean well though.

Imisssleeping · 21/12/2010 23:40

Penelope, what happened to the other car driver? was he hurt, prosecuted?
sorry just being nosey.
