I really like Leeds. Lovely vibrant city.

I couldn’t agree with you more, I love living there!

Kirkstall Abbey is fantastic 😊. Love a good ruin to walk through and this Abbey is one of the best.

Last week it was Aberdeen,
Next week Cardiff,
Week after Doncaster,
Then Ely (or Egremont)
Frome,
Guiildford.

I think you can safely ignore them.

Local Facebook group in Cardiff often have people who claim to live there going on about how they daren’t walk in the centre in the day never mind the night, drugs, violence etc etc. It’s a city. You do see people drinking, probably smoking dodgy stuff and so on, but I have never felt unsafe there. It’s all rubbish.

DH is in Birmingham for a few days, this week. Perhaps I should say my goodbyes 🙄

Tell him to stand outside M&S at New Street with a rose between his teeth and a rolled up copy of Homes and Gardens under his arm so I'll recognise him. I'll protect him with all the might of a little 57 year old woman who spends half her life fending off people saying "Awroight bab' (threateningly).

I miss the 😂 reaction!
i grew up just north of Brum. I never had much of an accent (parents Welsh) but for some reason I’ve taken to calling the cat ‘bab’.

Jenrick is surely getting close to inciting violence, isn't he? I mean, I can't imagine the marines actually doing this, but is there not a very real possibility that his comments might inspire some of the balaclava types to step in and do it themselves?

What is wrong with him, I wonder. Did a migrant piss on his teddy or something?

He’s just appealing to the balaclava types, who he knows will lap it up. Maybe he’s hoping they’ll vote for Reform rather than Restore.

Oh, I know, but I honestly can't understand how anyone can be so utterly devoid of basic humanity.

His comments and the reaction to them are really quite striking in terms of illustrating just how far the Overton window has shifted. A few years ago, I think there would have been uproar if a really high profile politician had said something like this, but it has received very little attention really.

Should there not be at least a little more outrage about the idea of the state using lethal force against unarmed civilians?

I find myself wondering how anyone could have married Jenrick, let alone procreated with him.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 12/10/2026 23:49

I did think about starting a thread to discuss the Jenrick comments on AIBU. I really don't think they have had as much coverage as they should have done, and people should know exactly what Reform stand for. But I know that the thread would probably fill up with people who would be delighted to let the state start killing unarmed civilians, and I don't think I have the resilience to deal with that right now.

Jenrick needs to be held to account though. He shouldn't be able to say stuff like this and get away with it.

He's exhibiting at the NEC and mostly intimidated by the parking and unloading arrangements but I'll tell him to keep you in mind for emergencies 😂

Agreed, there should be more outrage, that a high profile politician has advocated lethal force. It certainly is vile. And yes, it does indicate that the Overton Window has shifted.

My parents had fallen completely down the "we're not allowed to celebrate Christmas anymore" rabbit hole despite living in a town that put the lights up end of October every year. I remember one conversation about how Birmingham didn't have any Christmas decorations etc. DH's dog club used to attend an event in the centre every November and after rehearsals on the Saturday they used to wander round the Christmas market. I could show them photos but they were still unconvinced.

I just googled it. Oh dear, they forecast that the UK economy will grow. It looks as if that visit will have be postponed yet again.

They already have. DT is remanded I. Custody until his hearing in March for slashing a boat.

He knows he has a following who will lap it up - he also knows he cannot realistically walk away from international law.

It’s about appealing for divide rather than conquer IMO.

I think it’s interesting how little coverage Jenrick’s nonsense created. He’s desperate for attention (hence the ever more outrageous claims) and jockeying for position with Yusuf for the post Farage world. And yet really he’s relegated to fruitloop howling at moon.

I assume Badenoch’s trip to visit Murdoch in August has something to do with this. It’s not the first time he’s paid for her to visit him of course.

I think the lack of uproar perhaps indicates our expectations have lowered, rather than that as a society our values have shifted. At least I hope so.
I find the comments appalling, obviously. But I'm no longer shocked as its just the latest thing. I'm so used to it now, I'd not give it the thought I once did. But the failure to react as I once would have doesn't mean acceptance, more detachment.
I know these people exist now and have them in a box with war, famine and cancer. Blights on our lives, but i expect them to be, so no surprises.
